Docs for Diskread: What is Diskread? Diskread is a program that takes an unprotected 5.25 inch disk for an Apple II computer and converts it into a file. The file it creates has no header or trailer. It is a straight dump of the information on the disk. What can it be used for? Diskread can be used in conjunction with the Spurlock Apple 2 emulator for IBM compatible machines. If you don't already have this program you can FTP it off internet. What do you need? The program should run on any Apple 2 under Prodos 8. You must have two prodos devices. Preferably one should be a large storage medium. (ie something that can fit an entire floppy onto it). Obviously a entire floppy will not fit on another floppy. Users who have only two 5.25 inch drives or 1 5.25 inch drive and a ramdisk can copy parts of a disk at a time and piece them together on the IBM. How do I use it? The program is very simple. First of all the disk to be read must be in slot 6, drive 1. To copy it you simply type in the prodos pathname you want to store the file at. eg PATHNAME? /RAM/EMULATE Next you type in a filename for it. eg FILENAME? TESTDISK Next you type in starting and ending track numbers. eg START TRACK? 0 eg END TRACK? 34 People who have large ram disks, hard disks or 3.5 inch drives will probably never need to use any track numbers but 0-34. Once the disk is copied into a file there are several ways you can get it onto the IBM for use with the emulator. - Use a NulModem serial connection between an APPLE II and an IBM and send the files across with youre favorite modem prog. - Put the files on Apple 3.5 and use a Mac with a HD drive to write them onto MS-DOS 3.5 inch format. - Modem the files across to the IBM. If you needed to copy the disk in 2 or more parts you can recontruct it at the IBM end by typing "copy PART1.BIN+PART2.BIN EXAMPLE.DSK" That is all there is too it. Notes - The machine language subroutine must be in the same directory as the program. - Remember you must copy off Slot 6, Drive 1 - As you can see this isn't the most professional program ever written. It took me three hours to write and that is only because I haven't used BASIC for years and it took me a while to get past REM and PRINT statements. Your welcome to play around with the program and make it more user friendly, bug free etc. - Standard disclaimer: If you or any of your team are caught or captured the secretary will disavour any knowledge of your actions. And as well as that I won't be held responsible for anything that goes wrong with the program. - My Address Damon Rand 85 Puriri St. Christchurch New Zealand (03) 3487393 Internet:RAND_D@kosmos.wcc.govt.nz
