My name is Beverly Cadieux. I write the Apple II newsletter TEXAS II, and I am the programmer for the Y2K fixes for AppleWorks, ProSel, Sneeze, Managing Your Money, Change-A-File, TimeOut File Librarian, and a few others. -- Summary of Y2K issues for the Apple II -- Hardware - Apple hardware, including the IIGS, should be okay. So should third-party IIe and IIc clocks as long as they are ProDos-compatible. System Software - Apple Computer recommends that IIGS users upgrade to the current system software, System 6.01, which includes ProDos 2.0.3. They don't say why or "what will happen" if you don't, but since System 6 is readily available, there is no reason not to update. If you cannot download System 6 from Apple's Web site (www.apple.com) or obtain it through your user group, it can be ordered on disk at very low cost from The Byte Works. E-mail Mikew50@aol.com for more information. IIe and //c users should not have any problems with system software, but ProDos 2.03 is the current version. ProDos is the bootup program on many of your Apple II disks, such as the AppleWorks Startup disk, ProTERM, and other Apple II software (not DOS 3.3 or most games). The version number is shown as you boot the disk. We know of nothing terrible that will happen if you don't update to ProDos 2.03 on a //e or //c, but if you decide to do it, COPY ProDos 2.03 to your AppleWorks or other disk, letting the new version replace the old. ProDos 2.03 is included on the current Apple IIe and IIc System disk, available from the same sources as IIGS System software mentioned above. Other programs: AppleWorks - Almost all AppleWorks versions have Year 2000 problems, some serious (AppleWorks 1.0,1.1,1.2,1.2,1.4, including French and Spanish Versions, AppleWorks 2.0, and 2.1, will not start up at all). AppleWorks 3.0 problems are moderate, and AppleWorks 5.0 and 5.1 are mild unless you actually use the functions involved. AppleWorks 4 appears to have no problems. TEXAS II fixes them all. We will either fix your AppleWorks disks for you for $10, $15 overseas, or you can subscribe to TEXAS II on Disk, which Phil did. TEXAS II disks contain all the fixes; you copy them in yourself. We will be introducing "AW 5.2" later this year. AppleWorks GS - no known problems. MultiScribe - no known problems. ProSel - Very serious problems if you use the Volume Repair or Mr.Fixit module to repair disks. The update, which took hundreds of hours to research and fix, is available from TEXAS II for $10, $15 overseas. Again, also available on TEXAS II on Disk. Managing Your Money - Will not start up at all. TEXAS II fixes it for you. Dollars and Sense - Uses century 19 only. We have a fix for the ProDos version only, to change it to 20. Quicken - no fix yet. Users should make alternative plans now. Some new products are being written, others are being updated. On Balance, Bottom Line - will not be fixed. Users should make alternative plans now. TimeOut File Librarian for AppleWorks 5 (not AW 3) - Handles either 19 or 20 years, but not both. Our fix lets it use both centuries. Other programs such as Change-A-File, Sneeze, and a few others are cosmetic only. In other words, your screen will not display the date correctly, if at all. Most of these are fixed and available from TEXAS II. A few myths: "The Apple II Y2K problems are not serious" - False. Some of them are very serious. Learn as much as you can now, before problems occur later that you cannot reverse or fix. "I'll just wait and see what happens." - False. If you run ProSel's Mr. Fixit in fix mode, your file dates after 2000 will be lost. It happens without warning and is not reversible. Update NOW, so that this never happens. "The updates won't be available until later." - False. They are available now. Most work now, and they will work later. A few updates should not be used until 2000, and we clearly tell you this in the docs. "The updates are patches; I don't understand patches." - The updates are not patches. They are finished programs and files which are already updated for you. The disks and files are finished and ready to go. You do not need to know about patching.
