I've always attributed this to operator error, but when I put one on my GS and it started happening to me, that was a different story entirely (of course) . Anywho, I think we can blame the init string in PT3.1 for this one, in their default init string the &D2 command was active in conjunction with &Q0, which caused the modem to "Disconnect and return to command state" during a on to off transition of DTR. (RE: Page 37 of the SupraFAXModem Reference manual) The cable that InTrec recommends for a GS hardware handshaking cable has the modems RTS and DTR lines (4 & 20) tied together with the ports output handshake signal, so when the signal would go low to stop data flow, DTR would also go low (off) and the modem would disconnect. My modified string below, avoids this and seems to work reasonably well.
