-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I suspect I'm just missing some configuration on the Mac OS X side of things, but while fighting to get my GS talking to my Linux server again (recently migrated from LFS to Gentoo), I figured I'd use one of my Macs as a temporary go-between. I have 10.2.8 on a beige G3 and 7.5.3 on a Quadra 610. I tried having the GS log into the G3...it shows up in the AppleShare cdev, but it only wants to try to do a guest login. When I accept that, it then responds with this error: No response from the server. Please try again. I then tried the patched "LinuxShare" cdev I received in email a while back (this, BTW, logs into a bone-stock netatalk 1.6.3 without problems). It offers to try to log in as a registered user...I give it the username and password I'm using to log in to Mac OS X. It comes back with the same error. My GS can access network shares on the Quadra with no problems...that's how I got the LinuxShare cdev to it. Is there something different in Mac OS X such that a IIGS can't access files on it, or am I just doing something wrong? (If push comes to shove, I can shuffle files through the Linux server...that's how data normally gets moved between my Apples and my Win32 boxen. The server has both netatalk and Samba installed.) _/_ Scott Alfter (address in header doesn't receive mail) / v \ send email to $firstname@$lastname.us (IIGS( http://alfter.us/ Top-posting! \_^_/ pkill -9 /bin/laden >What is the most annoying thing on Usenet? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.3 (Linux) iD8DBQE/ne0xVgTKos01OwkRApvNAJ9m1CuAgCmSICTzDp+aBncjMJVxaACeP/3Z 6bLw2tuz5jkpIVqJRMO7WJ4= =BxOA -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- In article , salfter@salfter.dyndns.org (Scott Alfter) wrote: > I suspect I'm just missing some configuration on the Mac OS X side of > things, but while fighting to get my GS talking to my Linux server again > (recently migrated from LFS to Gentoo), I figured I'd use one of my Macs as > a temporary go-between. The server has both netatalk and Samba installed.) Scott, I think the problem is that the File Sharing in Mac OS X doesn't want to use AppleTalk, but wants to use TCP/IP - it will use AppleTalk to report itself to the network, but not for the actual connection. The program to enable AppleTalk file sharing is SharePoints - available at: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12512 It has an option under AFS Properties to enable AppleTalk. That should get it working (fingers crossed). Good luck! In the top pane select '/' then 'config' then 'AppleFileServer'. Then in the bottom pane select the property 'use_appletalk' and change its value to '1'. The bigger problem is that Apple 'repurposed' a flag originally used for storing ProDOS files on a Mac volume. As a result while the IIGS can read files fine from the Mac it can't write any files to it. I think it was only forked files it couldn't write. When I tried it nothing worked but possibly all the files I was creating using the Finder were forked, later I found out non-forked files were supposed to work but haven't connected them together since to try it. -- Roger Johnstone, Invercargill, New Zealand PS/2 Mouse Adapter for vintage Apple II or Mac order at http://vintageware.orcon.net.nz Roger Johnstone (roger@ihug.invalid) wrote: : You can also turn on AppleTalk for file sharing by using the NetInfo : Manager in the Utilities folder. I wasn't able to get anything to write from the IIgs. I can read files all I want from the OS-X box, but when I try to write I get a "permission denied" error even though I am writing to a directory "owned" by the IIgs. My solution has been to use an old MacOS box as a file server. I have to have it in the network anyway to serve as the bridge between the Ethernet network and the Localtalk network anyway, I might as well park files there, too. Next I want to get MacIP running on the IIgs so that I can actually log in to a shell on the OS-X box, not just share files back and forth...sharing files is useful, but I want to do more useful things...! --Dave Althoff, ][. -- /-\ _ *** Respect rides. I was not able to access my OS-X box, I could only : find support for ssh remote login : Is there a way to enable telnet? : btw ..... Hat's off to Richard and Andrew!!! : Glenn You can enable telnet under OS-X; it's disabled by default. There is a line in /etc/inetd which would start up the telnet daemon if it weren't commented out...remove the "#" from the line that says: #telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/libexec/tcpd telnetd Restart inetd, or restart the machine...telnet is enabled. Learn this from www.macosxhints.com: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030818084455459 I just verified that I have telnetd going on my machine by telneting to 127.0.0.1 from a terminal window and getting a new login session. I'm not sure at the moment which version of Marinetti I have installed on the IIgs...how are you managing to get telnet working? Are you running MacIP, or are you not running over Appletalk? I seem to be lacking a MacIP gateway. Well, I have one I can install on the old Mac server, except that I haven't managed to get Open Transport working on that one... --Dave Althoff, ][. -- /-\ _ *** Respect rides. Apple might well have left telnetd out because the telnet protocol is horribly insecure...while you might only use it to log in from behind your firewall, some other luser might think having telnet access to his Mac from anywhere is great. (He'd only think it was great until someone 0wn3d his dumb ass.) As for my little problem...between SharePoints and NetInfo Manager, my GS is now talking to my G3. As others have noted, it might as well be read-only access, though...I get an error when I send a file to the G3, and it appears that the filetype and auxtype aren't preserved. At least netatalk under Linux still works...looks like that's what I'll keep using to move files between my IIGS and my other machines. (Still need to try again with the workstation card in my IIe...maybe I'll do that after I have something else running my beer fridge. :-) ) _/_ Scott Alfter (address in header doesn't receive mail) / v \ send email to $firstname@$lastname.us (IIGS( http://alfter.us/ Top-posting! \_^_/ pkill -9 /bin/laden >What is the most annoying thing on Usenet? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.3 (Linux) iD8DBQE/n2kdVgTKos01OwkRAiXRAJ9RdlwMqegY33k5K1XZDayy1tH8oQCcDf3w j+9xTEb3B1rAZ5E6sU9f92I= =2g+u -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
