Message-ID: <1992Jul8.030353.10189@ils.nwu.edu> Sender: usenet@ils.nwu.edu (Mr. usenet) Nntp-Posting-Host: aristotle.ils.nwu.edu Organization: The Institute for the Learning Sciences Date: Wed, 8 Jul 1992 03:03:53 GMT Lines: 86 Ok, I have done some work with the Intel 14,400 and also had to make a number of useless calls to long distance sites, like pro-tcc (a ProLine site running from an Apple IIgs using an Intel 14,400ex), to figure out how things were working. So far, the following init string works for all sites that you're going to communicate w/ at 14,400: AT&F\V3\N4S31=11E0 What this does is 1) fetches factory settings 2) enables the *new* result code returns. What the modem will return to the user is the PORT speed, not the actual modem connection speed. I called pro-tcc in ProTERM w/ the OnLine speed set at 38400, and when I got the connection w/ pro-tcc, the result code looked like this: CONNECT 38400 Who would ever have thought this on an Apple IIgs?! 3) Force v.42bis -- I knew pro-tcc had a 14,400 modem 4) set S register 31 to 11. This is also new to the 14,400ex and what it does is sets the maximum baud rate that the modem will handle. This sets it to 14,400...the absolute maximum. Setting it lower will force the modem to make connections at the specified speed or lower. 5) Finally, turn off echo. That's what the first test run from ProTERM revealed to me. Then, I tried a couple of other things, as in: AT&F\N4S31=11E0 The only difference here is that I'm using the regular old result codes that give details. So, when I connected to pro-tcc w/ this set, I got: CONNECT 14400/REL-MNP-COMP The absolute fastest this puppy can go! So, here we have full MNP levels1-5, and we also have data compression at v.32bis! This is incredible stuff folks. Then, I had to slow myself down a bit and connected to pro-sol :-) Pro-sol is the ProLine headquarter computer and is running w/ a 9600 v.32,v.42,v.42bis modem. But, the connection speed was at 9600/REL-MNP-COMP as expected, and the modem returned a post speed of: CONNECT 38400 Now, I didn't expect that, although I really should have...I mean it makes sense. But, in a way it doesn't. What exactly does setting the port speed to 38400 in ProTERM do? Are you ever really going to get that kind of compression speed out of a modem running from ProTERM, or from any application on a IIgs for that matter? I suppose I don't really understand this. My guess would be that if I set ProTERM's OnLine speed to 19,200 that these AT\V3 results would be 19200. That's fine, but can someone explain exactly what's happening and how setting the OnLine speed will effect communication? So, other than that, I have to report that I'm glad I bought the 14,400 modem! I'm still debating on selling the 9600ex, but I don't know how much that will be worth. I'd end up losing $200 from what I paid (actually, what's the going price for a used Intel 9600ex?) and I'd like to keep it for use w/ the other computer. Anyway, I thought I'd just ask some of you what all this means. I'm not so versed in modem technology, so help me out. Thanks, and if you're considering a 14,400, then the Intel is definately the way to go! Even though you're paying a couple hundred more, the support from Intel, the quality of the product itself, and the ease of use are just factors that you have to consider. Intel is one of the best companies I have ever delt with...they go out of their way for the customer, and I regard that highly in a company...as do most people. Well, talk to ya all later.
