If you want to try for some non-beepy sound, check out my sampled sound
routines on the web page below.  They will play 8-bit sound sampled at
11.025KHz (a very common case) with 5-bit fidelity, and 2x oversampled
so that the "carrier" frequency is 22.05KHz--high enough that it is inaudible
to most people.

And it works on any Apple II (though the demo editor is written for ProDOS
and assumes that you have lower-case display).
