Hi, I have been using the Harmonie drivers and a Grappler+ to print on an HP DeskJet 540. However, the IIgs refuses to print on my LaserJet 4L. When I try to print, the IIgs reports that printing is in progress, but nothing ever happens with the LaserJet. I have tried all 3 LaserJet drivers on the Harmonie disk, none work. Could this be something with the Grappler+ dip switch settings? What are the proper settings for a LaserJet 4L? One thing I found with my IIIp is it needed more memory. I added more and no problem. Everything gets converted into a picture, sent to the printer, and fired out. In this case there was too much detail for 1Meg to handle. I boosted it up to 3Meg and it can handle all but the most detailed pictures. What happened in my case was most of the picture was sent to the printer. When it ran out of memory, it wasn't able to complete the picture or accept any more data from the computer. This in effect means the computer thinks it's still printing while the printer is actually stopped. I'm not sure exactly what the dip switches do but today I decided to try printing to the LasterJet 4050 that I'm currently borrowing from my brother. I threw a Grappler+ into my IIgs and installed the Grappler+ driver and the LaserJet III driver from Harmonie and printing worked fine. I've been toying with the idea of buying a printer for my PC but all the modern printers seem to only come with USB ports. This LaserJet 4050 has both parallel and serial ports so I'm hoping I can buy it off my brother at some point. Anyway, my Grappler+ dip switches were set like this: 1: Off 2: Off 3: On 4: Off -- Jeff Blakeney - Dean of the Apple II University in the Apple II Community on Syndicomm.com CUT the obvious from my address if you want to e-mail me Michael J. I've been using Epson inkjets for about 7 years. My first one for almost 6 years. At that point I changed to a computer without a serial or parallel port. Needing a printer urgently I grabbed a Lexmark. I used the Lexmark for about 8 months when it died. Shortly before it died I was able to swap my old Epson for a similar one with an ethernet port. Since eternet looks likely to be here for quite a while I expect to be using the Epson for quite a while. One of the reasons I like Epsons is that darn near every Apple II program that prints will print to an Epson printer. Clogged jets? Well, I try to print something every month, usually I do that anyways. I did have clogged jets a few years back. As it happened I was almost out of ink at that point and ran out trying to clean the head. I thought that since the ink is water based then straight water would likely be better at cleaning the jets than the ink. So I drilled the cartridge, filled it with water and went through the cleaning cycle until the jets were clean. Wayne First off, are you using the latest version of Harmonie, the one designated as v2.11b? If not, a low cost update is available. Secondly, what happens when you run the ProDOS-8 based Printer.Test program that is included on the Harmonie disk? Thirdly, does the LaserJet 4L pass the built-in diagnostics test? Lastly, after switching printers from the DJ to the LJ, did you go to the Printer Control Panel to change settings? A problem with printing could be traced to a problem with the software, the Parallel card, the cable, the IIGS, or the printer itself. In order to find the actual cause of the problem, it's necessary to rule out all the possibilities... Well, that's where the problems start. The IIgs either locks after I tell the prog my Grappler+ card is in slot 7. But more often, now, it outputs what looks like mousetext to the middle of the screen. Check marks and such. The DATA light on the printer never even comes on. The test runs fine on my Deskjet 540. > Thirdly, does the LaserJet 4L pass the built-in diagnostics test? Has anyone else been able to print with a LaserJet 4L? Thanks, Greg Andrzejewski You would think that any printer with a common parallel interface and supporting PCL 4 would be compatible..... :) It's been a while since I worked with a 4L, but I do remember that the parallel signalling on the 4L was slightly odd. I remember working with a 4L in a DOS app and using standard parallel access to write PCL 4 to the printer. Sometimes the printer would freeze, sometimes the page would partially render. There was something very weird about the parallel interface on a 4L, but I cannot remember how we fixed it. Good Luck!
