I don't know if this is in any of the infinite number of Apple II FAQs or not; but tonight, I managed to find an easy way to transfer files from a GS to a PC without having to set up any networking or do massive amounts of disk swaps. I found a freeware utility for the PC that allows the system to work with HFS volumes. It's called HFV Explorer, and can be found here: http://mes.emuunlim.com/software/macemu/emuextras.htm Although according to the Readme file, hard drive support has been removed, I was able to get around this by going into the Windows Device Manager, tell Windows that the external SCSI hard drive (which is the one I swap between Macs and the GS as a mega floppy) is a removable device, and assigned it a drive letter. After rebooting, I ran HFV Explorer again, and the external drive was accessible. I was able to easily copy a couple images from the drive to the PC and view them with Paint Shop Pro. Anyway, this opens up some new possibilities. One thing I plan on doing soon is connecting a second external SCSI drive (formatted as HFS) to my GS and backing up the primary drive to it. Then I should be able to move the backup drive over to the PC and use HFV Explorer to burn it to an HFS CD- ROM (another feature of HFVE). Anyway, I'm extremely pleased with this discovery, and am looking forward to having the time soon to start my Apple II backup project. And I hope other folks here will find this info useful as well. :3 -- Otter (Lift MYTAILFEATHERS to reply via email.)
