> Just a quick question! > > I'm looking at an Apple II (at least, that's what the cover says).. not II+, > etc. But I don't believe it yet. Is there any easy way to distinguish an > Apple II from an Apple II+ (this one is missing the bottom sticker, if there > ever was one)? You should plug it in and turn it on, ideally without any cards plugged into the slots. (Open the cover , touch the gold-colored power supply casing to discharge yourself of static, and carefully pull them out *while the machine is plugged in, but with the power still turned off*, after noting which one goes where.) Then if the screen says "APPLE II" and then ">" where the cursor is, it is an A2 with Integer BASIC and new monitor ROM. If it says "APPLE II" and then "]" it is an A2+ with Applesoft BASIC and new monitor ROM. If it says "*" in the last line and has garbage on the screen above that, it is a machine with an old monitor ROM. In this case, hold down CTRL and press B, then release CTRL and press RETURN. Then interpret the prompt character as above. If it says only garbage and no prompt character shows up after turning the power on, it has an old-style non-automatic RESET circuit. Press RESET then go on as above. The only hard-and-fast difference between the A2 and the A2+ is the BASIC version. So presumably someone might have swapped the ROMs to pull your leg; I don't think there is any other surefire way of telling the difference. -- Linards Ticmanis The Master said, "The business of laying on the colors follows the preparation of the plain ground."
