Apple introduced file sharing as a new feature in Mac System 7, so Mac System 6 doesn't have the necessary bits. Your options are: (a) Upgrade to System 7 on the LC. (b) Get hold of a copy of the AppleShare 2.0 server and run that on the LC. (It takes over the entire machine, preventing it from being used for anything other than running the server.) Once either of these requirements has been met, the LC will be able to act as a file server, but you still need to set up the client side on the IIgs. I've posted articles about this in the past, and I expect that something has made it into the comp.sys.apple2 FAQ. The key requirements are: - Turn on AppleTalk on both machines. (This may require rearranging some cards in slots on the IIgs, depending on which ROM version you have and what you are currently doing with slots 1, 2 and 7.) - Connect the network between the machines. You must use the printer port on the LC, but can potentially use either port on the IIgs. - Set up file sharing or AppleShare on the LC, and share folders or drives as appropriate. - You must be running GS/OS on the IIgs in order to act as an AppleShare client. The system disk needs to have the appropriate support files installed. If you are booting from an 800K floppy, this is rather tricky, because it isn't possible to fit a normal IIgs system (complete with Finder) as well as the AppleShare client software. The solution available via the IIgs System 6 installer is to set up a system disk without Finder but with the AppleShare software. You can potentially run Finder as a normal application from another disk, but this is a pain in the neck if you only have a single 800K drive. No problem with a 1.4M floppy (SuperDrive) or a hard drive - just use the System 6 installer to add the AppleShare client to your system software. - Assuming you get everything working, use the AppleShare CDEV on the IIgs to connect to the LC, and log in as the owner of the LC. This will give you full access for copying files to and from the LC. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz
