(All IIgs/Mac-to-printer serial cables are cross-over.) The only differences will be in the flow control signals. Apple's standard pinout allows for single "handshake out" and "handshake in" signals, plus a "general purpose input". The Mac is able to use Handshake In and/or GPI as external clock signals (the IIgs can only use Handshake In for this purpose). The printer only supports Handshake In as a flow control signal, and doesn't use GPI. The printer expects to use the "handshake out" signal to stop the computer from sending data. This should probably go to the CTS input for a PC. It might also expect "handshake in" to be active. This should come from DTR or RTS. The pin numbering on the Mini-Din-8 connector is as follows, looking at the face of the socket, or the back of the plug. 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 The cable pinout to connect to a PC with D9 should be: Mini-Din-8 D9 1 HShkO 8 CTS (or possibly 6 DSR) 2 HShkI 7 RTS or 4 DTR 3 TxD- 2 RxD 4 Sig Gnd 5 Sig Gnd 5 RxD- 3 TxD 6 TxD+ (no connection) 7 GPI (no connection) 8 RxD+ (must be wired to signal ground - pin 4 at Mini-Din-8) If the pinout is right but you still can't print, I'd suggest checking your baud rate and other settings. The ImageWriter II has a block of DIP switches for setting these details, but I don't have the manual on hand to supply the details. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz
