In AppleWorks 3.0 and higher, peek $0FE0 will tell you not only if there is a memory card, but what type it is. If Peek $0fe0=0, no memory card. If Peek $0fe0=65=Bank-switched (AUX) memory card like Z-Ram. 88=Slinky memory card like Apple or Sequential. 82=Apple IIGS. To read the peek in AppleWorks, you need to either have UltraMacros, or dump yourself into the monitor (or visit monitor in the IIGS) to read it.
