Programmers may offer their software as Freeware, Shareware or commercial
programs. Freeware and Shareware may be uploaded and downloaded from
public sites, while commercial programs must be bought directly from the
programmer.
Freeware is (as the name says) free - enjoy it!
Shareware is not free. If you like a program and you want to keep it, you are
obliged to send a certain fee (usually between $5 and $30) directly to the
author. This will give him an incentive to produce more programs for the IIgs,
rather than doing some SuperNintendo games.
