Sukhoi Su-27 demo and QuickTime conversion. ¥ A preview of "The Su-27 Story" stack soon to be released ¥ A demonstration of playing converted QuickTime video with sound on the Apple IIGS This demo is freeware for the Apple IIGS. It may be freely distributed on disks for a small copying fee or on BBS's and the Internet. For years, the Western media has portrayed all fighter jets from the former Soviet Union as MIGs and their pilots as bumbling automatons. (For example, the way the "MIGs" were portrayed in the movie Air Force One. If they really wanted to take out the President, you'd think they would send Su-27s or one of its derivatives!) Now, with the cold war over, Western observers have had a chance to visit Russian airbases, fly their planes, and talk to their pilots. Sentiment has turned from fear and hatred to respect and admiration. The Sukhoi jets are the top of the line Russian aircraft and they perform at almost all international air shows, performing moves that no other production aircraft can do. I am currently building a stack, "The Su-27 Story," which provides information, history, pictures and movie clips about this awesome machine. That stack is not yet ready, so this demo is a preview of things to come. There is a dual purpose to this demo. It is a preview to the upcoming stack. It is also a demonstration of the GS' capacity to run full motion, full screen video with synchronized audio. This demonstration consists of a demo stack and a converted QuickTime movie of a Su-27 roaring down a runway. The converted QuickTime movie is stored as a PaintWorks animation. The converted sound from the clip is stored as a synthLAB sequence and wavebank. The demo stack synchronizes them together to provide the full QuickTime experience. Playing the animation requires at least 5MB of memory and then you will probably need to shift-boot. For 5MB users, you can hear the sound track separately through synthLAB and look at the demo stack with HyperCard IIGS (but without the integrated QuickTime converted video, which must be viewed outside of HyperCard on 5MB systems). For users with 8MB, you can run the included HyperCard IIGS demo stack to get a preview of "The Su-27 Story" and experience the QuickTime clip, full screen and full motion video integrated with sound. This movie clip will be edited before inclusion into "The Su-27 Story" so that the final stack will run on systems with only 4MB, but I wanted to release this unaltered movie and demo first because it is so cool. -Scott G.
