Our guest this evening is John Wrenholt, Publisher of Scarlett, which is a publication of Big Red Computer Club (BRCC) of Norfolk, Nebraska. John really is just more than the publisher, he owns BRCC and BRCC is setting a precedent of purchasing 'old' software from such companies as Activision and Electronic Arts. These companies have closed their doors to the Apple II's. Their programs were excellent. I, for one, am grateful to John and BRCC for this endeavor, because it means that we, the loyal Apple II owner can now obtain programs that we thought were no longer available to us. Programs such as: MusicStudio, Dragon Wares, Chessmaster 2100, Shanghai (one of my favorites) and the list goes on. The programs available are not only for the Apple IIGS, but also for the //c and //e's. John will tell us how you can be a subscriber to BRCC/Scarlett and how to obtain these 'thought-to-be-lost-programs'. Please help me welcome John Wrenholt, who will discuss with us the various programs he has for the Apple II's and the number of music programs BRCC has obtained. Of note, John has agreed to give away a copy of MusicStudio 2.0 (with manual) to an attendee this evening. AFC Eddie Thanks, John!!! St Wozniak Welcome John!! AFA Gene ()()()() John AFL JoyceM Welcome, John... BRCCMAIL Thanks Joyce AFL JoyceM John, do you want to discuss a little about Scarlett and BRCC? ELECTMUSIC () () () FredW1726 Who here is from BRCC... I want to know who to say THANKS!!!! to! BRCCMAIL The Big Red Computer Club now has about 7000 members. Membership is $19.95 a year. Anyone who has an Apple II can join. We have licensed or purchased remaining stock of many Apple II programs. Anyone can purchase these programs but members receive special pricing. Stock such as Instant Music, Instant Synthesizer, Music Studio, & Music Construction Set. AFL JoyceM John, are both Music Constructions Sets available, ie, GS and IIe? BRCCMAIL We only have the Apple IIGS version. For some reason E.A. was unwilling to license the Apple IIe version. AFL JoyceM Do manuals come with these music programs? AFA Gene BRCCMAIL Yes we have reproduced the manuals and any other documentation that was in the original packaging. FredW1726 AFC Eddie Great! AFL JoyceM For an example, what is the selling price of MusicStudio for a non-BRCC member? and for a member? BRCCMAIL Music Studio sells for $39 for non-members and $34 for members. ELECTMUSIC How about updating programs to be compatible with the latest OS? AFA Gene BRCCMAIL In most cases, we were given only the program (not the source code). Therefore, updating the programs is out of the question. AFL JoyceM Good question, Greg. BRCCMAIL We're still working on Taito but the decision makers are in Japan. AFL JoyceM :) ELECTMUSIC I would be interested in what obstacles you encounter when trying to purchase rights to discontinued GS software? AFC Eddie Mostly the price, Greg! BRCCMAIL The biggest problem is $$$$. AFC JohnC gee that sounds familiar ELECTMUSIC Even tho these programs are no longer available ???? AFC Eddie One of the best things BRCC has done for us is allow us to keep on recommending and supporting programs like MusicStudio. BRCCMAIL We still have a few Qix GS left in stock. Only $5. Thousands of IIe versions. FredW1726 Anyway of getting 'pre-sale' orders to raise capital to get a program licensed? AFA Gene Thousands? wow ELECTMUSIC Also... once rights are purchase , can you duplicate the programs to provide a stock for orders? AFC Eddie I heard that a new Bard's Tale III GS is coming out soon. Any chance BRCC will be selling it? SPEEDLIMIT BRCC... when you get the programs... do you also buy the source code ???? FredW1726 Qix at $5 is a steal. BRCCMAIL The contract with each company is different. Some allow us to duplicate the software, others only sell us existing stock. AFA Gene I think Interplay is handling BTIII themselves. Wonder how they're gonna distribute 'em, tho. BRCCMAIL We don't get the source code. Usually the original programmer retains the right to the source code. We have discussed getting BTIII but again the problem is money. ELECTMUSIC Is there any possibility of getting Passport Design's IIE and IIGS music software? AFL JoyceM Do you support the programs that you sell, John, technical questions, etc? BRCCMAIL We have not talked to Passport. We provide as much technical support as we can. However, for real technical questions we probably won't be able to answer. SPEEDLIMIT Oops I have a Question outside of the things we're speaking about... can I do that now ??? AFL JoyceM Sure, Speed AFA Gene John, you can refer the questions on your music products to our forum :) SPEEDLIMIT Joyce... I have Pyware Version 1.2... got it for 50 bucks at a store selling the 32 stave version... now what I want to know is the latest version of this program uses Midi input...have you used that newest version and does it mildly compare with the more dedicated Midi Sequencing software out there ???? AFL JoyceM I haven't, but I believe that Greg has. AFC Eddie It's quite good, Speed, and in our library there's an improved version of the font for printing. FredW1726 MasterTracks is a very nice MIDI program. ELECTMUSIC Speed... MWriter is not really a sequencer ... its designed for MPrinting AFC Eddie I suggest upgrading to the latest version. 40 staves and more. SPEEDLIMIT Eddie...what is the cost ??? and do you remember the name of the Font located in the library? AFC Eddie It can import MIDI files and create scores. ELECTMUSIC It will accept Midi input for notational purposes AFC Eddie Musicwriter Sonata font, I believe. SPEEDLIMIT ElectMusic... is that single note per note... or real time ??? AFC Eddie Real time or step time, Speed. ELECTMUSIC (ditto, Eddie) SPEEDLIMIT Sounds good guys :).... anyone know the cost per chance ??? AFC Eddie Um, I forgot..... ELECTMUSIC Well... your version should accomplish the same thing ELECTMUSIC Its just a little more cumbersome AFC Eddie yes, but prior versions required MIDI Translator! AFC Eddie Latest version will convert MIDI files on its own. ELECTMUSIC Only too translate a Midi file from a sequencing program AFC Eddie Right, Greg. ELECTMUSIC Speed's version can still accept Midi inputs direct AFC Eddie True. SPEEDLIMIT Has anyone tried to Print the Score with Music Write with a DJ-500 ??? AFC Eddie Nope, but I'd like to. SPEEDLIMIT Electmusic... yes I did note that, but looked rather cumbersome and complicated in the way it wanted to do it :> not the best Techie person in the world. ELECTMUSIC BRCC... back to Passport Design SPEEDLIMIT Thanks for the help Guys :) ELECTMUSIC any chance of getting some of their IIE and IIGS software? BRCCMAIL Is the demand for the program big enough to justify our efforts? AFC Eddie I'd say so. We get questions from IIGS and IIe users on them pretty frequently. ELECTMUSIC We are always asked about Midi software... and Passport WAS the best Game in town. AFC Eddie And there's little help from Passport. SPEEDLIMIT BRCC... I would buy it if you were selling it like you have the others I.E. Discounted :) ELECTMUSIC It would be nice to have a supplier of that type of software (Midi) SPEEDLIMIT Passport Pro IIGS is 450 buck program normally :> BRCCMAIL I'll have someone contact Passport after the holidays. AFC Eddie That would be great, John! SPEEDLIMIT YEAH that would be Wonderful :) BRCCMAIL If there's any interest on their part in licensing the software, then we'll try. ELECTMUSIC Passport is sort of a very conservative company but they should have nothing to lose. AFL JoyceM John, let us know if we can help you with Passport. FredW1726 Has anyone used MasterTracks Pro? AFC Eddie Many of us have, Fred. ELECTMUSIC I have Nuzz BRCC, will you be attending the BCS Apple show in April? BRCCMAIL Yes, we'll be at Boston. We signed up for two booths. SPEEDLIMIT <--- I did for a While IIGS version... very powerful and nearly as good as anything available to the Mac World up till the last year or so. FredW1726 What are its advantages over MTJr. and other MIDI programs for sequencing? AFC Eddie Fred, there are many features not on MTJr. Powerful editing. BRCCMAIL Can anyone send me a Xerox of any info available on Passport's Apple software. AFL JoyceM I can, John, and will. SPEEDLIMIT Fred... almost unlimited playing with the Midi Sequences you've made. MT jr... is basically disabled version of the MT Pro version...although very good never the less :> ELECTMUSIC Could you tell us of any other software you are going to be providing in the near future? AFL JoyceM Of the Passport programs, I would think that the Pro version would be the best to purchase, if possible. FredW1726 All I could afford at the time was MTJr. SPEEDLIMIT BRCC... I second Joyce... if you could get that and Discount it... you'd have a winner :) BRCCMAIL We are very close to getting all of the Sierra On-Line titles and we just picked up Xenocide from M.R. AFL JoyceM John, how have sales gone with the repurchased programs? AFC Eddie That's good news! AFL JoyceM John, that is really great. We do applaud your efforts. BRCCMAIL We having a very good holiday season in terms of sales but in order to cover costs that we had to pay to get the titles, we'll need strong support next year AFC Eddie We'll be there! AFC Eddie Any news about a GS version of Labels. Labels, Labels? AFL JoyceM :) SPEEDLIMIT BRCC... that little mailer that I called and asked for... IMHO is something ya need to send all the various Apple Clubs around the country BRCCMAIL I've been too busy with the other software to program much but L.L.L. GS should be available soon. AFC Eddie WOW! SPEEDLIMIT REally... will it do labels for Laser Printers and Such ??? AFC Eddie That and Graphic Disk Labeler are the best label wares around! AFL JoyceM Great, John....I used LLL for my Christmas cards this year - thanks for a great program. BRCCMAIL I haven't added Laser support yet. AFL JoyceM If you all will remember....I stated earlier....that... John would be giving away a copy of MusicStudio to a person here... SPEEDLIMIT BRCC.... the DeskJet has become a big seller in the IIGS market and I know that lots of people would love to have something which would do 8 by 11 sheets of labels :> AFL JoyceM now, the person who can give the correct answer to this next question can receive this program. DangardAce Sure, HP support for laser labels would be great AFL JoyceM Speed, you mean 3 up? FredW1726 Fingers poised at keyboard... DangardAce Avery 5160's. AFL JoyceM I would like that... SPEEDLIMIT 3 across or what ever the format as such... was going to try some things with AWGS but its a headache to get the various angles and such :> AFL JoyceM 4144's too. DangardAce Just imagine the resolution for the graphics :) AFL JoyceM Okay....here is the question: Ready? What MusicStudio song file in our library has had the most downloads? AFC Eddie Hmmm, that's a tough one! AFL JoyceM Counting.... AFL JoyceM 10.... FredW1726 Can I peek? Nuzz how bout a hint AFC Eddie As they all scurry to find out ;) AFL JoyceM no peeking AFL JoyceM 9 SPEEDLIMIT BRCC... in anycase... Hope it sells well :) cause I want a IIGS version of LLL :) AFL JoyceM ....8 AFC Eddie Yes, we all do, John! AFL JoyceM 7 AFL JoyceM ......6 FredW1726 Somewhere Out there..? AFL JoyceM good grief guys... AFL JoyceM Nope, Fred AFL JoyceM 5...... FredW1726 Can I buy a vowel? AFL JoyceM ........4 AFL JoyceM The whole name of the song... AFL JoyceM ......3 and counting down AFL JoyceM ..........Eddie want to give a hint? FredW1726 Star Spangled Banner? AFL JoyceM Sorry, Fred AFC Eddie OK, you have to be spaced out to like it :) FredW1726 Comfortably Numb? AFL JoyceM ........good hint.....2 AFL JoyceM Sorry, again, Fred :) Nuzz is it a movie theme FredW1726 Star Wars Theme song. AFL JoyceM or have stars in your eyes? AFL JoyceM Is that close, Eddie? FredW1726 Star Trek? AFC Eddie Getting warm!!!!! AFA Gene Getting hot! FredW1726 Only fair to let everyone else in... AFL JoyceM Well, I think we have to give it to Fred...The song title is, Star Trek, The Next Generation. John, how do you want to handle sending MusicStudio to Fred...do you want him Nuzz I think Fred guessed that AFC Eddie Yes, the MS version of that song is the most downloaded song in our library! AFL JoyceM to give you his address here or have him E-mail it to you? 590 is the count today. FredW1726 Excellent song...and show!! AFC Eddie Second is the SynthLAB version of the same tune! BRCCMAIL Either way is fine. AFL JoyceM Fred, why don't you E-mail your address to BRCCMAIL. And congratulations. FredW1726 I guessed the entire library :) AFC Eddie Fred, now you will be able to listen to the whole MS library! FredW1726 Thanks Joyce, and BRCC. AFC Eddie One song at a time, of course! AFL JoyceM John, thank you for donating this...it is appreciated. Since our time is about up, any more questions for our guest? AFC Eddie John, thanks for visiting with us! BRCC is great! BRCCMAIL Support your Apple IIGS software publishers! Buy a program today! AFL JoyceM :) SPEEDLIMIT Bought 3 in the last week :)] ELECTMUSIC Thanks John () () () AFL JoyceM John, for those who might not know, please give the address of BRCC and the cost of membership which includes the excellent publication, Scarlett. Nuzz Just a music aside: ClipTunes and soon, SoundConvert are available through BRCC too. FredW1726 BRCC is exactly what the IIgs needs...may do for it what others did for the994A FredW1726 SoundConvert? What is SoundConvert? Nuzz SC is a HCGS stack utility to digitize into HCGS, and includes a digitizing NDA to digitize into anything, using any GS card. FredW1726 OK, gotcha. AFC Eddie Can't wait for SoundConvert! AFL JoyceM John, again, thank you....we appreciate your information. AFA Parik my music final is tomorow morning (eww :), quick mondo off-topic q: is there a real quick way to identify a chord besides memorizing it or starting at the root and counting 3ds and 5ths? AFC Eddie The root might not be the lowest note, Parik! AFL JoyceM memorize, Parik AFA Parik our sadistic teacher almost always makes sure of that, eddie. AFA Parik eww joyce. Oh well. thanks. :) (i've got all night .. ) AFL JoyceM They eventually become second hand, Parik. ELECTMUSIC Ya have to get the chord set in thirds... and then the lowest note is the name (not considering major, minor , dim... etc) AFA Gene Sit in front of a piano and make sound and visual connections between the chords... it'll be easier to remember. FredW1726 'fraid they're still 3rd hand here. AFL JoyceM --------------log off------------
