Tonight our topic is System 6.0 and its implications for the music and sound user. Basically a free-for-all to discuss problems we've come across, neat new features we've found, etc. Let's begin! :) Finder sounds! AFC Eddie Finder sounds work! But if you want the shutdown sound to work, you need to patch Sys 6.0! AFA Gene We now have Finder sounds (actually rSounds) in our libraries under the search code RSD. AFC DYAJim Twilight II supports "screen is blanking" and "screen is unblanking" beeps :) AFC DYAJim what's rsd? AFC Eddie RSD is the index code for resource sounds. LindsayGS Jim, have you tested Twilight 2.0 with 6.0 ? AFC DYAJim T2 requires 6.0 for many features. LindsayGS aside from hypercard, h-studio and finder, how do you guys use the rSounds? Is there a way to activate them with an NDA? or are you just using the finder? AFC DYAJim only thing is that T2 doesn't like closeview too much. Nuzz Lindsay, any program can request the sound cdev to play a sound Spottysoft (seems like nothing likes CloseView much...:/) LindsayGS right, mike - I was wondering what programs are using it - ? Nuzz Its a little soon for that Lindsay. I'm finishing a Finder Extra that converts sounds, and anyone can call it from a program, and I'll do the conversion and return the sound back. AFC Eddie Here's another quirk about 6.0 and MastertracksPro: AFC Eddie If you boot from the System Disk of 6.0 after adding Tool 32 and Apple.Midi driver, it can support NDA's! But any other way, it can't! AFL Marty But not from a hard drive, Eddie? AFC Eddie Correct, Marty! AFL Marty Conflict with SCSI Driver/Manager maybe? AFC Eddie So it must be something I have configured in my HD. Yeah, Maybe! Nuzz Well, I have a beta rSound Editor for Foundation :) LindsayGS Why am I not surprised mike! did you write it, or are you testing it? Nuzz I wrote it LindsayGS that's exciting, Mike - I'm gonna DL the foundation stuff, now that i got 6.0. I never did get any resource editor. LindsayGS BTW - you can boot without NDAs if you boot GSOS with the shift key pressed. AFL Marty Have they come out with new ROMS for the RamFast? Nuzz Martys sounds are really neat AFL Marty They're not exactly "my" sounds. All I did was convert stuff that was already online. Nuzz But the choices were superb :) AFL Marty The burp sound is really funny when you have company :D Nuzz I wanted to upload the "Big Deal" sound. AFC Eddie Well, anyone want to ask or say anything about Sys 6 and music or sound? Compatibility? SynthLAB? Nuzz I used that so much debugging all the sound stuff, I felt I owed it to it. AFL Marty If anyone's taking requests...I'd like to have a "Yum" sound to map to inserting a disk. Nuzz Oh, I have a HyperStudio 3.0 style ClipTune xcmd almost done. AFL Marty Maybe Cookie Monster. LindsayGS anybody seen an application besides synthLab that uses the midi control panel? AFC Eddie The MidiSynth Player NDA used it, I think. How about Minstrel? AFA Gene Wouldn't only applications that record need to use the cdev? LindsayGS no, gene, it records your config to midi - whether it's out or in AFC Eddie The MidiSynth Player did record! AFA Gene Right... so then any midisynth program that uses external midi devices would need it, no? AFC Eddie Yes, Gene. That's all it asks for, is the MIDI connection. Nuzz I want to add a switch to ClipTunes that will play to the Midi device as well as the speaker AFC Eddie Great idea, Mike! AFA Gene So then it would follow that SS1.0 must use it? AFC DYAJim SS1.0 might not.. AFC Eddie But does SS use Midi Synth? AFC DYAJim as SS1.0 uses the MIDI tool. Nuzz LOL Eddie, I think not AFL Marty No Eddie... just the MIDI Tool. AFC Eddie So I doubt it uses the CDev. QuackDuck Music Studio 2.0 Used it (but who uses it??) LindsayGS Gene - each program can record the midi config for itself, or use midi cdev AFA Gene Oh yeah, got things mixed up... it's SS so why would it use midi synth! :) LindsayGS the midi cdev can be used with tool 32, tool 35, or no tools at all ! AFC Eddie Interesting! Nuzz I'm surprised that AMS hasn't gotten more questions about finder sounds AFC DYAJim what's rsd stand for? AFC Eddie Resource SounD, Jim! AFA Gene Isn't it interesting that the Mac is on v7.0 of their system and we're already AFA Gene on v6.0, and the GS was released over two years later? AFC Eddie Yeah, can't wait til GS SSW 8.0! AFA Gene Interesting course this chat took. It seems that we're all heading toward that ideal position we'll all be in less than a decade where cross-computing will not be a factor and everything will be integrated.
