Forum Leader: Joyce Madden (AFL JoyceM), Forum Assistant: Gene Koh (AFA Gene) Forum Consultants: Greg Dib (ELECTMUSIC), Ed Rosenblatt (AFC Eddie), Lindsay Hough (LindsayGS) Copyright (c) 1992 America Online All Rights Reserved =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- AFC Eddie Ian, good work on the IRC disk and SoundConvert! IRSMan Eddie: thanks AFC Eddie Ian, finally into MIDI!!! IRSMan yupper, though my keyboards pretty lame, only 4 voice multitimbral but what the heck, it works :) and its not at all velocity sensitive which is kinda annoying. AFC Eddie That's not too bad! Now can you Please, Please do an editor/librarian for us???? IRSMan Nah, just use MegaTracker :) AFC Eddie What's Megatracker? IRSMan The Two Meg MIDI/SoundSmith solution :) currently in alpha testing by a couple of people AFC Eddie Tell us about it! MegaTracker, that is. IRSMan Well, its SoundSMith compatible, but it has pitchbend and full-blown MIDI support, even SysEx dumps :) AFC Eddie WOW! ELECTMUSIC Ohhh boy.... AFL JoyceM SoundSmith compatible - in what way? AFC Eddie Who's doing it? IRSMan I'm doing it. It works with all soundsmith instruments and songs Including SSS Sound Editor instruments which I had to special case for :) Korby Does anyone know any 'magic words' for the Underground part in NoiseTracker? ELECTMUSIC Curious as to what your feelings on the Midi Tool35 ? IRSMan I personally think Tool035 is neatoid but too processor intensive. Im glad Tool035 IS an official part of System 6 now AFC Eddie Sorry, Korby, never heard of the Underground part! IRSMan (this from Andy Nicholas at Apple, so it IS official) AFL JoyceM Ian, what is your program called again? ELECTMUSIC Considering Apple is releasing it on the next System Disk... IRSMan Underground is fun. Joyce: MegaTracker Underground keywords: FTA, SWITZERLAND, ACS, SSS, GOGO to get to Underground hold down Shift and pull down the Desk menu. FTA tells you "1987-1991, RIP" Korby try typing 'himself' it's really cool! ELECTMUSIC I think we will see some activity in the way of files and programs for tool 35 IRSMan himself? okay :) AFL JoyceM Great. Ian when you program (MegaTracker) gets close to release, let me know and we will have you as a guest so you can promote it, etc. :) IRSMan Joyce: I will. Anyways, small MODs with pitchbend in them sound fabulous when MODifier -> MegaTracker Wastoid I think Noisetracker is an GREAT program that WAS programed very well! IRSMan NoiseTracker ignores all effects except set tempo and set volume which sucks AFL JoyceM One item I don't like about NT, is that I have to rely on someone else to give me the MOD files :) Korby Is NoiseTracker supposed to be shareware, or what? I can't find any info. IRSMan Get an Internet account, there's tons of MODs for free Wastoid Yes, I would suppose that it wasn't COMPLETLY finnished.. Looks like it won't be either...:< IRSMan NoiseTracker is FTAs final IIgs production. ever. :-( Gog has promised to finish it, but his GS goes in the garbage after that Korby Why???????!!!!??? IRSMan Gog and the French United Crackers Klan have IBMs, the rest of FTA have Mac IIs Korby GROSS!!! IRSMan They're tired of being the primary support for the IIgs. also Gog broke up with his girlfriend and had a fight with Mr. Z AFC Eddie I hate those fights! IRSMan yeah, BUT they WILL release all the games they showed on their Summer Tour as a goodbye present AFL JoyceM FTA did great justice to and for the GS. Too bad. Korby What games are these? IRSMan (they aren't finished but are cool anyways) IRSMan There's a Pole-Position type game, Bouncin' Inferno (like Spindizzy) and some others. Korby Maybe if we all sent them letters telling how much we appreciated the stuff and maybe offered to pay a small shareware fee they'd still program IIgs IRSMan Also Psygnosis is doing an official Lemmings GS (while were talking games :) GS<>IRC is doing the FTA Tribute Disk. (after the REALLY Late XMAS Demo) AFL JoyceM So NoiseTracker will never be 'finished'? IRSMan Really Late XMAS will have border effects beyond belief AND great musics AFC Eddie Never a NT 1.0? IRSMan Joyce: it will go to 1.0 and then stop Shantech Does anyone know whether NT supports MIDI IRSMan it doesn't AFC Eddie Too bad. Well, that makes MegaTracker that much more exciting! AFL JoyceM What improvements will they do - we have 0.70 now. IRSMan I don't know what improvements will be made. the version number seems to be going faster than the number of improvements though Korby Is it freeware, or shareware (how much $) IRSMan So it may be a 'token' 1.0. Its freeware Shantech What do you reccomend as a "sound module" for my computer? (I can only use SL) IRSMan Sound Module? heh, I dunno, I use my GS as a sound module with MegaTracker :) AFC Eddie Shan, not sure what you want in the way of a sound module. What would you like to do? Shantech I've got a drum machine I run through my computer so I can sample sounds and use them from the machine AFC Eddie Shan, is it connected with MIDI, or just to digitize? Shantech connected to MIDI. I want to trigger digitized sounds by hitting my pads on the machine IRSMan ahh, you need MEgaTracker :) Shantech what is that? IRSMan (blatant self promotion, ALERT!) It lets you load SoundSmith instruments and trigger them by note and program number via MIDI among other things :) Shantech when / where is it? IRSMan its not out yet, when = by summer. its currently version 0.25, I just got MIDI output working :) AFC Eddie IRS, have you tried the Tool 32 from Sys 6.0? IRSMan its not avalible quite yet, though I'll be beta-testing hopefully soon. Tool 32? the regular MIDI tool? AFC Eddie Yes, the MIDI tool. ELECTMUSIC What Midi tool are you using? IRSMan is there anything special about it on 6.0? AFC Eddie The one on 6.0 may have problems. ELECTMUSIC Hmmm... why? IRSMan I'm not using a tool, I'm directly talking to the MIDI drivers for speed AFC Eddie When I try to run Mastertracks or MusicStudio with it, I can't input MIDI. IRSMan SS 1.0 uses Tool035 and gets really bogged down as a result ELECTMUSIC Is it a new tool? AFC Eddie Yes, it was redone for 6.0. Bigger. IRSMan I've found that even with 5.0.4 I have to turn my keyboard off and on everytime I want to input in MasterTracks ELECTMUSIC Ian... why would SS1.0 use tool 35? IRSMan EM: cuz Huibert wanted it easy :) AFC Eddie Ian, that's cause you're using a Casio!! IRSMan I have it, it does use it :) Eddie: I know, the running status gets confused AFL JoyceM Eddie, my Yamaha also reacted that way. IRSMan MegaTracker has no such problems ELECTMUSIC Geez, that seems silly, since he really doesn't use any of its features...except the MIDI in and out IRSMan yeah, that's all he uses Nuzz SoundSmith uses tool 35 (Midisynth) ? IRSMan makes sound interrupt handling really fun for him...and it crashes frequently ELECTMUSIC now if he used more features... it would be a different program IRSMan (but then I have 1.0b5) IRSMan SoundSmith version 1.0 uses MIDISynth, but it doesn't plya MS songs AFC Eddie Maybe the Tool 35 in 6.0 will fix some of those problems. IRSMan I hope so. I -really- wish there was a MIDISynth editor... Shantech what's it look like for the official GSOS 6.0 release date? AFC Eddie Speaking of Roland, I got a new toy for mine. IRSMan (I can play things perfectly until SynthLab record mode is ON :) AFL JoyceM So, Ian - why not write one along with a librarian :) hint hint IRSMan official 6.0 looks like ~ a month AFC Eddie Ian, why don't you WRITE an editor! AFC Eddie GMTA, Joyce. AFL JoyceM :) AFL JoyceM What toy did you get, Eddie? IRSMan heh, I would, but I'm really not sure how. AFC Eddie I got a new PG 10, which is an automatic programmer for the D10 and D20. Bet it would work with D5 too. AFL Marty (I have a quick question about AudioZap) IRSMan sure, go ahead AFL Marty Is there a way to be rid of the shareware notice? (I have paid the shareware fee) AFC Eddie Good question! AFL Marty Obviously if there is I don't expect an answer in public... EMail is fine. AFC Eddie You can IM us paid people with the answer ( if there is one!) IRSMan yes, except I don't have a unsharewared copy of 1.2 around..just 1.3b1 which doesn't play :) IRSMan I specifically coded it to make your life miserable. for taking it out, but here is a hint: look for AlertWindow calls. I can get a 1.2.1 'real' if it really bugs you :) AFC Eddie What's the latest version you released, Ian? IRSMan 1.2.1 AFL Marty It's not that important... just a minor annoyance. Since you were here I thought I'd ask. IRSMan 1.3 is in development...will do conversion to from Standard Workstation Sounds and other assorted goodies :) AFC Eddie Ian, how about stereo recording for AudioZap? IRSMan AFC: for Sonic Blaster or AA? possible, I'm taking steps in the code now to make that easier AFC Eddie Yeah, Sonic Blaster does Stereo recording. ELECTMUSIC Nice to see so much for the GS coming from one person IRSMan I'm gonna try a new kind of recording, recording on DOC interrupts for PERFECT sample rates. if it works, you'll be able to do perfectly tuned samples :) I'm not sure yet if it will though :) AFC Eddie I'm still trying to figure out how to digitize an instrument and make it in tune with SoundSmith. IRSMan Heh, I recorded a whole disk of SS sounds in tune when I was using an AA over the summer, I should upload it :) AFC Eddie How do you do it, Ian? AFL JoyceM We would appreciate than, Ian IRSMan Eddie: I have SoundSmith's internal table of Hz->notes :) AFC Eddie I'd like to digitize some of my Proteus sounds for SS. Is that private info, Ian? IRSMan noper. just hard to read if you aren't ORCA/M :) AFC Eddie how can we get it for ourselves and our users? IRSMan Well, I can make it into a more 'human readable' format and upload it :) AFC Eddie That would be GREAT!!!! AFC Eddie Maybe even with a text file explaining how to use it! IRSMan I'll tell you now that none of the digitizing programs I know of exactly match any soundsmith note frequencies as a record rate AFC Eddie I know, I know! IRSMan hopefully this new kind of AZ recording will fix that IRSMan :-) IRSMan but I got to +/- 15 Hz or so with the Audio Animator software, which is better than most of the FUN instruments AFA Gene I recorded some SoundSmith instruments at perfect A=440 pitch last summer, did it by ear - forgot the exact record rate/frequency, but I think it was something like I had to set the record rate at 22,000 hz and downtune the keyboard -11hz. AFC Eddie The instruments on the DYA disk are pretty well tuned. IRSMan yeah, DYA was done with the internal table on hand :) AFC Eddie Ah! IRSMan (Jim cheated! Jim cheated! ;-) AFC Eddie It was Matt, not Jim! IRSMan heh AFC Eddie Thanks, Gene! IRSMan whatever AFL JoyceM By ear, Gene - great. IRSMan :-) AFC Eddie Will the new recording method be on AZ 1.3? AFL JoyceM DYA will be our guests next week - Jim won't be here but Matt and Derek will be IRSMan Eddie: will be if it works AFC Eddie Great, Ian! Looking forward to that and Megatracker! AFA Gene DYA took a roundabout method of recording their instruments... they recorded them all onto tape first, then digitized the tape AFC Eddie How did that help them, Gene? AFA Gene Dunno. I guess it was just so that Jim didn't have to lug his D70 over to Matt's house. :) IRSMan it didn't help them per se, except that they could rewind easier than recreating a sound :) AFC Eddie But there's so much more control at the synth level. Velocity, tuning, etc. IRSMan Lugging a D70 probably factored into it :) AFC Eddie D70's are heavy. AFL JoyceM A note of interest, regarding music...In my AARP newsletter this past week, is the following: Whatever the potential of music therapy, there's no question that more people are taking it seriously. Congress is getting ready to amend the Older Americans Act to authorize funding for research, training and education in music therapy. A bill to effedt such change passed the Senate last week after Oliver Sacks and a chorus of health professionals, musicians, patients and relatives sang its praises at a Senate aging committe hearing. Congress is expected to approve the final bill early this year. AFC Eddie Joyce, let's get a grant! IRSMan heh, I've known that since my first day of marching band :-) AFL JoyceM Remember, Sacks is the guy in the movie Awakenings. So, I guess we could call our chats Therapy! AFC Eddie Joyce, whose copy of the AARP journal are you stealing? AFL Marty Therapy for what purpose? AFC Eddie Your grandparents? AFL JoyceM Thanks, Eddie :) AFL Marty Emotional therapy? IRSMan what, we aren't playing music during the chats. AFC Eddie Yup, music therapy does wonders. IRSMan At least not until I talk Parik out of the BGSound user interface to do a MT CDA :). Parik, BTW, has left the GS. :-( AFA Gene hmm... {S fanfare} music? AFL Marty I know. I just didn't realize that someone was going to do a study. AFC Eddie Keep trying, Ian! AFL JoyceM The February issue of AARP has an article called 'The amazing 'power of music'" AFC Eddie Yeah, those AARP guys are real MegaDeath fans, right, Joyce? IRSMan hehehehehehe AFL JoyceM Parik has left us? IRSMan I don't know...I listen to anything as long as its Rush ;-) AFA Gene Megadeth, ed.. spell it right :-) AFL Marty I've often thought that music could be useful in schools to help curb agressiveness, increase concentration, that kind of thing.... IRSMan yeah, he dropped in on IRC and said he's no longer doing IIgs. sad. AFL JoyceM Good point, Marty. AFL Marty Works for me. IRSMan very good point. AFL JoyceM Works for me too....listening to some great classical music (Mozart) as we 'speak'. AFL Marty Was listening to a little Glenn Miller earlier. IRSMan I know when I'm really annoyed at something I usually either listen to music or play some. It really does work...and it took Congress this long to find out? %-) AFL JoyceM I do the same, Ian...good therapy AFL Marty Listened to some Tchaikovsky last night... very soothing. AFL JoyceM I also like Enya (new age type music). AFL Marty By the way, the soundtrack from Terminator 2 is very good (IMHO)...I thought it might be too distracting for use while I'm working but..that wasn't the case for me. AFL JoyceM Hmmm...was there music in T2? I just remember the great graphic changeovers. IRSMan hmm, I'm currently listening to G'n'R, though other stuff is in the CD. :) AFL Marty Oh yes. Definitely. I have G'n'R too, but I can't listen to it and work too. AFL JoyceM I guess I just don't remember the music - at least I didn't come away humming it. IRSMan T2 is a great movie, I really didn't notice the music either...the visuals are so cool. AFL Marty It's hard to describe... when I listen to the T2 CD I can almost sense metal. IRSMan Only movie I liked better than T2 lately is ST VI. :) AFL JoyceM I might have to go down to my favorit CD place and give the CD a listen. IRSMan hmm, may have to pick up the T2 CD and hear for myself :) Nuzz Has anyone seen the digitized version of "Metropolis" AFC Eddie No, Mike, is it good? AFL JoyceM Not I, Mike. IRSMan oh, you mean colorized? Nuzz No, Digital re-recording of the soundtrack IRSMan ahh cool. Nuzz Its a 1920's movie IRSMan no, I haven't. Nuzz Futueristic theme AFC Eddie The new game, Gold of the Americas uses a MIDISynth sound track. IRSMan I know its a 1920's movie, I saw it on cable :) Gold of the Americas plays 5 measures with the intro screen and is silent the rest of the game. (or at least on my copy it is) its not really well done and it tends to blow up on my ROM 3. AFL JoyceM Night all..and thanks. Remember, next week is DYA night. IRSMan I'll upload some stuff :) ELECTMUSIC Thanks Ian AFC Eddie Yes, Ian, especially the digitized sounds and the chart!! IRSMan okay, will do :) AFC Eddie ---------------------------Log Off---------------------
