EXTERNAL OUTPUTS: DISK AND PRINTER Some of the data File Passage (FP) uses can be directed to disks and printers. Both text edit and catalog-style lists controls can be a source to these output devices. When transferring data to disk, text edit information is stored as text, and catalog-style lists are stored as an archival library, file type: $E0; auxiliary type: $8011. SAVE AND APPEND FUNCTIONS File Passage allows you to save data to disk in two ways: "SAVE AS..." and "APPEND...". Each of these menu items are accessed from the FILE menu. Both SAVE AS and APPEND will open a movable dialog window. SAVES and APPENDS restrict file types for existing files. An APPEND will cause the output to be tacked on to the end of a file. Append restricts cross-file type appendages. For instance, you can append text edit information onto a file that is not a text file (TXT), and you will not be able to append data from a catalog-style list to any file that is not of type $E0. OPEN The OPEN movable dialog allows you to open any file stored on disk including the catalog-style list. Either the catalog output or the preview windows accept the catalog-style list depending on the list's origin. The content window accepts other file types. Example: Lets say you open up a Teach document. FP loads the first block of the file into memory, and then sends this data to the content window. If masking is on, and the masking character is a space character, then the format information will be removed, and you will looking at the file now formatted in the system font. PRINTING Access the PRINT function from the FILE menu. Use PRINT to print the active text edit control, or the catalog-style listing in a FP window. The caret blinks in the active text edit control. You will not be able to access print from movable modal dialog windows such as the file name filter window. If you want to print one of the catalog-style lists, the output will not have the icons. Also, the catalog-style print-outs require the Courier font be installed. Pointless' TrueType courier is highly recommended. To abort a print operation after the print job dialog, press Apple-period. Page Setup Dialog Before you print anything, access the PAGE SETUP item from the FILE menu. Once your in the PAGE SETUP dialog, you set the your desired printing options. If you change printers from the control panel, as when switching from a LaserWriter to an ImageWriter, then FP will present you with this dialog before printing, but only if you neglect PAGE SETUP, or if you've changed printers. I keep an ImageWriter II and a LaserWriter directly connected to my Apple IIGS. The ImageWriter is connected to the printer port, while the LaserWriter is connected to the modem port (I don't own a modem). I can change from one printer to the other printer by changing the control panel: DIRECT CONNECT PRINTER and, if switching to the LaserWriter, the NETWORK PRINTER control panel. My LaserWriter NT documentation came with specific directions on how to connect the LaserWriter to an Apple IIGS. GS+ magazine also offered some money saving tips in one of their magazines on connecting a LaserWriter to an Apple IIGS. If you would like to know more about connecting a LaserWriter to an Apple IIGS, you can write to me (Charles). Fonts While the current FP version does not have the ability to modify fonts, you can still cut & paste font data into a FP text edit control, and the print job will reproduce font data.
