MULTIPLE TARGETS File Passage (FP) has several dialogs and a special button that you need to be aware of when transferring data to multiple target disks or paths. Volume Full Error Whenever you're doing a file transfer, you may run into a volume full error. This can happen when FP is creating a new target path, is creating a new target file, and when FP is writing a file. In each case, FP will tell you that the a GS/OS volume full error occurred. Remember that when FP receives a volume full error while WRITING to a target file, FP will delete the partially written target file, and the source file will be left unchanged. Errors affect the source file stream in one of two ways: (1). The file that caused the error will be skipped over. This is how FP handles every error except VOLUME FULL ERROR. (2). The file that caused the error will be the next file processed. This is how FP handles the VOLUME FULL ERROR. Special Button In Data Transfer: New Target When a user selects the NEW TARGET button, the data transfer process continues with a new target path specification. The NEW TARGET transfer works the same way as when the CONTINUE button is selected, except that the target path text is scanned for a new target. The CONTINUE button does not cause the target path to be scanned. Use this button to continue data transfer across multiple target disks. How To Make A Backup Of Your Hard Drive To Multiple Floppies Let's assume that you want to copy everything on your source drive to several smaller target volumes, and you want to make the target disks mirror images of the source disk. You would start by specifying the source and target paths: Source: /MasterDisk/? Target: /SlaveDisk By using the wild card file name, FP will not create an extra folder "MasterDisk" on the target path when BEGIN is selected. When a volume full error occurs, FP will suspend the data transfer process. You would then eject the "SlaveDisk" and insert the next disk that you want to use as a target backup. If the disk hasn't been formatted or needs to erased, you can open and perform these functions. When you've got your target disk ready for data transfer, set the target path in the data transfer window to the newest volume: Target: /SlaveDisk2 Then select the NEW TARGET button. FP will continue the data transfer with no interruption in the flow of source files. If you have to restore your back up image, the process is simply reversed: First execution: Source: /SlaveDisk/? Target: /MasterDisk Further transfers: Source: /SlaveDisk2/? Target: /MasterDisk Existing Target Dialog If you have PROMPT ON EXISTING TARGET FILE option set, then an existing target dialog will open whenever a target file exists for a given source file. From this dialog, you can choose to replace the target file, specify a new path, specify a new file name, skip the file, or cancel the data transfer. See common controls documentation. Insert Disk Dialog When FP attempts to access a volume that is not on-line, FP will ask you to insert the missing disk. If you select cancel from this dialog, then FP will report a "volume not found" error.
