ExplorerGS Information & Index File: AaINFOandINDEX.txt This ExplorerGS collection is from the Apple II AOL-on-Ground Project ftp://ground.ecn.uiowa.edu/apple2/Collections/AOL/ ... Dr. Charles T. Turley, Director ~~*~~ C o n t e n t s ~~*~~ I. Introduction-- Start Here II. Info about Program and Character Files III. Adventure Scenarios *==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==* I. Introduction-- Start Here Playing Explorer, A Quickie Intro System Requirements: Apple IIgs, 1.25MB RAM minimum, running some version of GS/OS. You will need GS-ShrinkIt (sometimes called "GSHK", "ShrinkIt-GS", etc.) to unpack .shk files. Download ExplorerGS.shk and unShrink using GS-ShrinkIt. Move the files to a directory (like Explorer/). Use Teach or some other text viewer to read the EXPLORER.DOCS for directions on movement, etc.. ExplorerGS includes three adventures. Start Explorer from the Finder. From the FILES menu, pick a Scenario and pick a character. (Several characters are available in the Characters folder.) From the GAME menu, click Play Game. Once you see that everything is working okay, you can exit the game and use GameMaker to create your own new character. If you want to keep the one you were using, you can give him/her a new name by renaming the char's file. Q: Can I save a character during play? A: Yes. Click "Save Character". You should save your character from time to time during an adventure since this is the only way to make any Experience, Level, etc. gains permanent. Q: Can I save my position in an adventure? A: At present, there is no way to save your position or 'save a game' in ExplorerGS. The adventures are supposed to be played through in a single session. Many users have created adventures for the ExplorerGS system. Usually, the result is a single file plus, perhaps, a Text file with a story line, hints, etc.. Quite a few game makers have created their own pic and data files. These are custom versions of the Explorer.Pic and Explorer.Data files. Adventures with custom pic and data files are in separate folders to avoid conflicts with the standard pic and data files. Directions for playing these adventures are in the Expl.Extra.Doc file included in ExplorerGS.shk. (Actually, it's pretty simple. You just move ExplorerGS into the game folder and move it back out after you've played.) More Things to Do Soon, you will want to generate a new character of your own (see docs in GameMaker) and, possibly, try more characters developed by other players. You can create as many characters as you like. Characters can be brought into a game from any folder; so, you can keep all characters in a Characters folder. Some of the most fun comes in making and sharing your own adventures. To create your own scenarios, you use GameMaker. In order to get your scenario or favorite character into this and other archives, you can put everything into a single .shk file and upload in _binary_ mode to Ground's main upload folder along with a short Text description file. (For example, if your adventure stuff is in "NarfGame.shk", the Text file describing it would be named "NarfGame.txt".) An alternative which may work faster is to attach the .shk file to an email describing the adventure. Send to me at rubywand@swbell.net . Info about Program and Character Files File: ExplorerGS.shk (145042 bytes) Note: The file ExplorerGS.shk includes ... ExplorerGS files (shareware fee: $10) GameMaker files (shareware fee: $10) Character files ExplorerGS by Jason Smart Explorer is the latest program by Travelling Faire Software, the creators of Golem, The Golden Bug, and Castle Metacus. Explorer is the desktop-based, graphic version of the Maze Launcher design-your-own Mazegame adventure program uploaded about 2 years ago. It will run any scenario created with the GameMakerGS program. Since Explorer is a design-your-own-adventure program, scenarios can take on a huge variety of forms. Obstacles faced in the various scenarios may include mountains, rivers, forests, traps, hidden spikes, forcefields, talking walls, lava pools, hidden passages, and a variety of monsters and evil creatues. Other features include auto-mapping, magic spells, treasure chests, and boats for sailing around the seas. As your character battles with monsters and wins scenarios he/she will gain experience, new spells, and increased strength, wisdom, etc. __This download includes everything needed to play__ I have provided three scenarios: Lyle.Valley - This is a small, easy scenario meant for beginners. Play this one first. Islands - Find the rocky island and defeat the wyverns in their lair. Nor.Forest - This is a much larger scenario. The object is to defeat the demon and find the hidden sceptre. There are many hidden rooms and passages, so keep your eyes open. Explorer is SHAREWARE ($10), unless you have purchased any other Travelling Faire program. Jason Smart ------------------ GameMaker by Jason Smart GameMaker creates scenarios and characters for ExplorerGS. It utilizes a desktop-based, point-and-click interface, and has an extensive online help dialog. It provides many helpful features such as auto-aligning of doorways and stairways between rooms, and layout editing, for altering the overall layout of the scenario. GameMaker can also load already existing Explorer games for revision. Characters can be created from 28 different races, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. GameMaker is shareware ($10), unless you have purchased any other Travelling Faire program. Jason Smart ------------------ Character Files The Characters folder contains several pre-made characters. A few are beginning characters originally included with ExplorerGS. Many are favorite characters-- some Very stong-- uploaded by players. Most of the descriptions below are from the players who uploaded characters. Char: BUFFMAN Player: GS Maniac He's a Level-9 Barbarian with 175 HP and 50 SP. Also Download my Hell Game for a good challenge. __________ Char: Colin Player: Jason Smart Colin is a Level-1 Archer. HP/SP= 90/20 __________ Char: DAEMON Player: Evan Trent... ME ME ME ME!!! He is a black phantom, has something like 800 odd hit points, 270 or so spell points, all the spells possible, and has nice stats. Just a note, perma resist and water walk spells won't work at the same time. __________ Char: FANTASY Player: Samantha DaSilva This is a level 324 snow demon. He has 8660 HP and 860 SP. His stats range from 82 to 93. __________ Char: Hemajoma Player: Jon Nicolette This is a Level-1 Blood Phantom. HP/SP= 110/90. __________ Char: Golem Player: Jason Smart Golem is a Level-1 Flame Demon. HP/SP= 110/20 __________ Char: HOKIEBIR Player: Robert John Lymburner As a wyvern, this character has flown its way up to level 92 and has incredible stats. __________ Char: InvisibleMan Player: unknown This is a Level-1 Black Phantom. HP/SP= 110/120. __________ Char: Konfantasy Player: Samantha DaSilva Konfantasy is a Level-27 Snow Demon. HP/SP= 311/110. __________ Char: NARF Player: Rubywand Narf is a Level-2 Knight. HP/SP= 111/10. __________ Char: PAITHAN Player: BANDIT26 This character is already fairly strong. If you do not wish to start a new character from scratch, you may want to download this one, so that you can enjoy some of the many wonderful ExplorerGS games that are being created. As with any adventure character, you will grow in experience as you continue to play. By seeking out certain characters in an adventure you can increase both your level (hit points) and your spell points (for casting spells). If you like the character, or if you have played either the "kasnar" or "the.great.hall" ExplorerGS game let me know. __________ Char: SUPER Player: Michael Ash Super is a high-Level Elf. This is a very good character. __________ Char: Thaddius Player: Jason Smart Thaddius is a Level-1 Magician. HP/SP= 70/140 __________ Char: Usagi Player: Pomisher Level-1 Mauler. HP/SP= 60/20. *==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==* III. Adventure Scenarios These are the adventures you load and play using ExplorerGS. The adventure descriptions are by the authors. Title: Abatts Abode Date: 02/21/95 Upload: MrSandman3 File: ABATTS.SHK (2573 bytes) Author: AnDrew Black This game is for beginners only. This game took me only 2 days to make. It should take no more then 2 hours to beat. Guaranteed: at least two level ups. TALK TO EVERYONE!! Send me comments and suggestions to MrSandman3 Via E-Mail. Have fun and remember From beginners only PLEASE. It is easy Enough! __________________ Title: Abyss I Date: October 11, 1993 Upload: MrSandman3 File: ABYSS1.SHK (7261 bytes) AUTHOR: Jaxon Travize & Andrew Black This is the ULTIMATE in morbidity. As the name suggests this was designed to beat the player, NOT vice-versa. We recommend it for experianced players who are looking for a challenge, or simply need to get their new characters up levels. ___________________ Title: Astra Trilogy Date: 10/29/93 - 11/07/93 Upload: Shadow5037 File: AstraTrlgy.shk (72505 bytes) AUTHOR: Samantha DaSilva Astra (in Astra1Astra.exp folder) My ninth Explorer game. The eighth, Mountain River, got deleted when my brother "accidently" deleted my entire hard drive. Back to Astra, this is the first game in the Astra Triology that I'm working on now. I have included a background story in ascii text format. It's relatively easy and short, except at the end, where there are several rooms with five phantoms in small areas. (Maybe one or two...) So to be safe from the phantoms, your character should have a pretty high amount of HP, and about 450 MP for required spells. Your character must be able to cast "Animate Bones", or whatever that spell is called. ------------------- Humis (in Astra2Humis.exp folder) My tenth explorer game. This is the second game in the Astra Triology. There is a short beginning story (added on to the end of the Astra story) included in ascii text format. If you haven't beaten Astra yet, or if you beat it a while ago, it's probably a good idea to play that first. (to keep the story straight, I think I put some stuff in Astra that corresponds with Humis) ------------------- King Hummel (in Astra3KingH.exp folder) This is my 11th Explorer game. This is the final game in the Astra Triology. I included a short intro story (added on to the Humis one) and also a short ending story for the entire Astra Triology. (the stories are all in ascii text format) Since my character is around level 384, it's hard for me to tell how much hp you need to beat a game, but I think 3000 + is about right. Also, your character must be able to fly or cast the spell "water walk". This game is beatable without playing the other ones first, but if you want to follow the complete story, then you should play them in order. I included a questionaire in ascii text format. It's basically so I can know the levels and stuff of your character, so that I can adapt my next game accordingly. I would appreciate if you fill it out. ___________________ Title: Bryn Myrddin Date: 11/25/91 Upload: Suetonius File: BRYNMYRD.SHK (2703 bytes) Author: Suetonius & Tribble 6 This is a easy to medium game for ExplorerGS. It's quite good, and it's alot like the board game called checkers! I hope you like it! His father tested it and found no major defects and it is winable. __________________ Title: Crystal Orb Date: 12/14/91 Upload: LaneF1 File: CrystalOrb.shk (29290 bytes) Author: Lane Foulk This author's second submission is quite a bit larger than the last, Gauntlet. This scenario is for characters of levels 5-15, if balance is desired. A file AUTHOR.NOTES is included along with custom Explorer.Data and Explorer.Pic files unique to this adventure. This author wishes to thank those other authors who are submitting quests for Explorer. __________________ Title: Dark Messages Date: 04/19/92 Upload: SRC File: DARKMSGS.SHK (9474 bytes) Author: Joshua Cantrell Dark Messages is very challenging in my opinion and has many different rooms to explore. It uses the original graphics. For more information read the doc. __________________ Title: Darkthorn Date: 12/14/91 Upload: Amadeus4 File: DARKTHORN.SHK (6065 bytes) Author: Amadeus4 This is my first Explorer Scenario. I'm not sure how difficult it is too solve, but you need an extremely powerful character. (If you have a weak character, you could always change the monster strenght using Gamemaker, of course. ) Please let me know if you like it. ___________________ Title: Daventry Date: 9/28/98 Upload: Rubywand File: Daventry.shk (2132 bytes) Author: unknown Your quest is to defeat a wicked Ogre who is plaguing Daventry and secure the hidden treasure. ___________________ Title: DeathFlame Date: October 29, 1993 Upload: Darkfalz File: DEATHFLAME.SHK (4120 bytes) AUTHOR: Me (Darkfalz) This is a game I made with the Explorer Game Designer. It took me about 4-5 hours of work, and is really pretty damn good. Originally I made it really tame with little EXP available but then pushed lots of monsters into it and now it should be fun for hack-slashers and role-players... This is really quite large, used up about 90 of the 92 usable rooms, three well-developed levels, all five keys used... Once you finish the ones that come with Explorer, download this one! BTW: Have fun and send me comments! ___________________ Title: DeathHall Date: January 30, 1997 Upload: Rubywand File: DEATHHALL.SHK (1705 bytes) AUTHOR: unknown This is a fairly short, direct challenge which seems designed to give newer characters a chance to grom lots of Gold plus some Experience battling groups of weak to medium strength monsters. ___________________ Title: Death Quest (new version) Date: October 29, 1993 Upload: WizardoGuy File: DeathQuest (6041 bytes) AUTHOR: Ryan Wilson, aka RyanW4 (mods by WizardoGuy) This is a rather LARGE game for ExplorerGS. It's a complete world! I took the name of the program quite literally here... you'll have do EXPLORE! :) Originally this was Death Quest created by RyanW4. There were some mistakes, and some impossible areas (hidden passages conflict with emptiness, or there was such nothin')Reviewed the game with GameMaker, and found some errors.I have corrected them and modified a few to make the game a little tougher. Good luck. __________________ Title: Dungeon Date: 12/14/91 Upload: TomM74 File: DUNGEON.SHK (9350 bytes) Author: TomM74 Try this game for ExplorerGS when your character is up to the challenge. __________________ Title: Five Trials Date: 02/21/95 Upload: Shadow5037 File: FIVETRIALS.SHK (24139 bytes) Author: Samantha DaSilva Thia is my 12th Explorer game. I think the minimum requirements for your character's HP and SP would be around 2000 HP and 70 SP, if you make frequent stops at the healing places. A comfortable level of SP would probably be around 500 SP. Game intro: In an attempt to impress your friends, you have set out to find the legendary sword that once belonged to the hero, Kormu. You begin your search in the town of Kastra, where you have heard the sword is located. Apparently, many others have heard that too, as you arrive just in time to get the last room at the large local inn... __________________ Title: The Forest Date: 04/19/92 Upload: WizardoGuy File: FOREST.SHK (6468 bytes) Author: WizardoGuy This is a very tough game since all the guards are black phantoms and there's an average of 2 to 3 *EACH* room, and you can be ambushed by 5 black phantoms at some areas, so use a very high level character, and fight well! Send comments. __________________ Title: Gain Date: 04/19/92 Upload: MASTER 999 File: GAIN13.SHK (2116 bytes) Author: Stephen Cravey I wrote this because, to get experience, you had to play the same games hundreds of times. This is one you can play twice and have plenty. I also suggest that you start out with a fairly strong character. If you have ANY suggestions or comments, leave me email here to MASTER 999. __________________ Title: Galgoroth Date: 12/14/91 Upload: JonN5 File: GALGOROT.SHK (2417 bytes) Author: Jon Nicolette This is an easy to moderate adventure scenario. It's good for those just starting out with ExplorerGS and want something challanging but not discouraging. Includes a slightly better than average character. ___________________ Title: Game of Keys Date: 04/19/92 Upload: WizardoGuy File: GameOfKeys.shk (4539 bytes) Author: Me! :) (WizardoGuy) This is my first game for Explorer. Fun, and the object is to find all 5 keys. The onyx is hardest to find. If you need hints, send me a letter. - WizardoGuy ___________________ Title: Gauntlet Date: October 29, 1993 Upload: LaneF1 File: GAUNTLET.SHK (21833 bytes) AUTHOR: Lane Foulk This is an ExplorerGS module of novice->intermediate difficulty level. A READ.ME file is included which explains how to utilize the custom data and pic files included which are specific to this adventure. A character of reasonable survivability is included. This is the author's first scenario, but is of reasonable quality and has been extensively de-bugged. Hope all enjoy! __________________ Title: Great Challenge Date: 04/19/92 Upload: WizardoGuy File: GREATCHAL.SHK (6491 bytes) Author: WizardoGuy Note: Needs 30+ level char. Send your comments! __________________ Title: Great Forest Date: 10/18/93 Upload: ToddLegg File: GREATFOREST.SHK (4277 bytes) Author: Scott Legg This is my first ExplorerGS game. You should download this revised explorer game and not the original. I would rate The Great Hall as a very challenging explorer adventure. There are many traps, and hidden rooms to find. It will take a medium to strong character to survive in this scenerio. You must have the Explorer.GS program (including the files Explorer.Data and Explorer.Pic) in order to play this adventure. Remember to search everywhere and to cast a heal spell often. If you play either The Great Hall or Kasnar please let me know what you think of them. Thank You........ Bandit26 __________________ Title: Hard Date: 06/13/93 Upload: JonGold File: HARD.SHK (2511 bytes) Author: JonGold This is my first Explorer game but it is VERY HARD. Andy Magyar AKA GS Maniac __________________ Title: HereAfter Date: 12/14/91 Upload: DBDERRE File: HEREAFTER.SHK (23571 bytes) Author: DBDERRE Here's a quest for Explorer that is not for the weak at heart (or character). Character starting level should be about 50. This is a mind twister as well as a character builder. New icons are included as well as some icons used from some of the other explorer games. Don't peek and this game should provide a few hour of hair pulling.....DB __________________ Title: Heroes' Hall Date: 11/25/91 Upload: PoMisher File: HERO.SHK (25555 bytes) Author: Pomisher Heroes' Hall is my first real attempt at creating an Explorer.GS scenerio. I've also added my version of Explorer.Pic and Explorer.Data. And, last but not least, a favorite "Hero". I don't know how strong he is. The scenerio starts off easy enough but there are twists and turns. And not all is as it seems. Let me know what you think. The Pomisher __________________ Title: Hunt House Date: 04/19/92 Upload: SRC File: HUNT.SHK (6163 bytes) Author: Joshua Cantrell In this game you are supposed to find the scepter. You find secret passages and dodge and disarm dangerous traps. If you think this is good please down load my second one called Dark Messages. __________________ Title: Hydrac Date: October 29, 1993 Upload: RobCat File: HYDRAC.SHK (21408 bytes) AUTHOR: Rob Tronic This scenario is targeted toward the characters above level 20. If your character is below, the game will pose as quite a challenge. I have created all new graphics for this game, aside from the treasure chest. (Many thanks to whoever created it.) It is a very original game. (At one point, you have to explore the sky on the back of a giant bird.) I have used all 5 keys, and all 92 rooms. Because I have altered nearly every one of the original pics, your character will appear totally different in this game. To put it more colorfully - If you were originally a warlock, you will now appear as a giant snail. Good luck! __________________ Title: Kasnar v1.1 Date: 11/25/91 Upload: BANDIT26 File: KASNAR11.SHK (5680 bytes) Author: Bandit26 This revised version of the "KASNAR" adventure scenerio for the Explorer GS program fixes problems with the original version. I strongly recommend that you download this revised version rather than the original KASNAR. I think that you will find both the "KASNAR" and "The.Great.Hall" adventures for the ExplorerGS series to be challenging and fun. You will have to search for hidden rooms in both adventures, and have a fairly strong character. Remember to cast a lot of heal spells. You must have both the (Explorer.Data and Explorer.Pic) files, along with the ExplorerGS program inorder to play. If you play Kasnar or The.Great.Hall and would like to see more Explorer GS adventures similar to these let me know. Thank You...... Bandit26 __________________ Title: Kipton Date: 04/19/92 Upload: Shadow5037 File: KIPTON.SHK (2943 bytes) Author: Samantha DaSilva Kipton is pretty easy. Any character should be able to play this. ___________________ Title: Kondoa Date: October 29, 1993 Upload: Shadow5037 File: KONDOA.SHK (7321 bytes) AUTHOR: Samantha DaSilva Here is my second game. This game is harder than my first one and your character should have around 200-300 HP to play. There are four enemies in most of the rooms and levels go up pretty quick. I have included a level 27 snow demon. __________________ Title: Koplas Date: 09/25/92 Upload: Shadow5037 File: KOPLAS.SHK (21788 bytes) Author: Samantha DaSilva Note: Excellent graphics in the PIC file. Hope you enjoy it!!! This is a rather hard scenario in parts, and should not be tried by a low level character (most should be in a good condition by now, mine is 229 HP 170 SP Level 15 or 16 Black Phantom with some KICKing stats. 16 in most) IMPORTANT: This scenario has the first of our series' modified shape and data tables. You MUST first rename your old EXPLORER.PIC EXPLORER.DATA files to something else (or just add a '.O' to the end of them). Then unpack this SHK file. There are 2 replacement files for the above mentioned files, and the scenario itself. These shapes will look STRANGE in other scenarios, but should work fine overall. Make sure to do a file shuffle to get your old shapes back (and rename these shapes) when you want to play other scenarios. There are some new characters, odd characters, new decoration, and a lot of modification to different parts of the scenario, etc. If you would like to use these shapes in one of your future scenarios, please refer to these shapes as GARGANCHUWA ONE ^^^^ ^^ Our name Our first Look for another scenario like this, but with more, and a space one coming soon. -Tim __________________ Title: Mars Date: October 29, 1993 Upload: RobCat File: MARS.SHK (24030 bytes) AUTHOR: RobCat A sci/fi futuristic adventure that takes place on the colonies of Mars. It has 3 worlds! The sequel is coming soon. ------------------ Wand of death II Well, Burbick the wizard is back in an AWESOME sequel to the original Wand of Death. You'll learn how to battle fire-breathing dragons and other nasties-but don't get too hot under the collar. The evil wizard returns with an even tougher challenge- so get hopping! Have a nice day:) If you play any of the Wand of Deaths for ExplorerGS, be sure to check WandStory.txt included in this file. It is the story of how Burbick got gained power and how this all started. Read it! __________________ Title: Wiley's World Date: October 29, 1993 Upload: N6NTI File: WILEYWORLD.SHK (5845 bytes) AUTHOR: K.W. Moordigian This isn't my First Explorer game; but, it is the 1st I feel is worth uploading. When I started it I was on level 15, and it was tough. Now I'm on level 119, and the monsters don't even slow me down. Advanced players might want to edit the global settings and 'up the ante' before playing! __________________ Title: Zardo Date: 04/19/92 Upload: WizardoGuy File: ZARDO.SHK (6366 bytes) Author: WizardoGuy I highly recommend a high level character since there's a lot of traps which could cost you 50hp, and there's a lot of black and blood phantoms loose there, especially at the end. __________________ Title: Zoo Date: 08/31/92 Upload: OTFIDDLER File: ZOO.SHK (15125 bytes) Author: David W. This is my first game; and, it is fairly challenging -- I recommend using a character with at least 100 HP. Also, I recommend using the pic and data files from Hydracs. (These are included in this .shk file.) If you can spare some HP, try talking to the monsters! __________________ --EOF
