AppleWorks 3.0 Network And Corvus/VeLan Networks

Some users have inquired about the feasibility of running 
AppleWorks 3.0 on networks other than AppleTalk.  Here is the 
information Claris Technical Support has obtained thus far:

Corvus

According to Corvus, after you patch AppleWorks 3.0 (single-user 
version), you can run AppleWorks on a Corvus network without 
difficulty. The patch will be released in June, 1990.  At that 
time Corvus will notify all their Network users. 

Some schools use unmodified versions of AppleWorks 3.0 
(single-user version) on the Corvus network; those schools will 
continue to encounter AppleWorks 3.0 bugs which were resolved in 
AppleWorks/Network. Most notably, they will crash into the monitor 
when they try to save to a non-existing or locked sub-directory. 
The Corvus patch will attempt to remedy those problems.

VeLan

There is no problem running AppleWorks 3.0 (single-user version) 
on a VeLan network. AppleWorks/Network will not run on a VeLan 
Network, as it requires an AppleShare server and an 
AppleTalk-compatible network.

Legal Considerations

The VeLan Network has an IBM AT or compatible as a server and is 
not AppleTalk or AppleShare aware.  It runs through RS232 cables 
and/or their own Workstation card. Users need to run an Install 
program that is included with the VeLan software, and use a Menu 
where they can choose the program they want to access from the 
VeLan server. The ProDOS file in AppleWorks needs to be re-named.

While it is true that users of Velan and Corvus networks can make 
the single user version physically function on their networks, use 
of such a version without ownership of either AppleWorks/Network 
or a site license is illegal.

Both Velan and Corvus are cooperating with Claris to make their 
future users legal.  Customers who are interested in obtaining a
