AWGS J __________________________________________________________________ Step-by-Step Instructions for fixing errant database files __________________________________________________________________ Sometimes, database files can become corrupted in ways that makes reports print improperly. Also, you may notice additional instances of crashes or erroneous data. Here's how to remove most kinds of damage from a corrupted database file: Create a trouble-free template 1. Open the trouble file. In this example, we'll call it "Members" 2. Choose "Show Definition" from the Template menu.* 3. Select "Show Marked Fields" from the Organize menu. The option must be enabled (checked). 4. Choose "Select All" from the Edit menu. 5. Choose "Copy" from the Edit menu. 6. Choose "New" from the File menu. 7. Double-click the filing cabinet icon. 8. Choose "Paste" from the Edit menu. 9. Choose "Save As" from the File menu. 10. Call the file "New.Members" 11. Click Volume until a disk with some room for files appears. 12. Click Save. Move the data from the problem file to the new file 1. Choose "Members" from the Window menu. 2. Choose "Save As..." from the File Menu. 3. Call the file "Members.T" 4. Click the "As ASCII Text" radio button 5. Click Volume until a disk with some room for files appears. 6. Click Save. AWGS exports the information in your database to a text-only file. 7. When the export is done, close the current window (Members). 8. Choose "New.Members" from the Window menu 9. Choose "Show List" from the Template menu. 10. Click into the first row of the first field. 11. Choose "Import File..." from the File menu. 12. Open the file "Members.T" 13. Click on the radio button, "Tabs between fields, returns between records." 14. Click OK. 15. If you get a message, "Some unselected fields will be changedI" click "Yes." AWGS copies information from the Members.T file into the New.Members file. When this operation is finished, you can save the New.Members file to disk, back it up, and use it as your recovered, working version of the file. *Note: If you have calculated fields, you should first arrange fields in the List view of the database so that non-calculated fields are all to the left of calculated fields.
