4/4/94 5:26:29 PM Opening ÒChat Log 4/4/94Ó for recording. AFL Don : HI Sears... AFL Don : You're the first here... SearsS1205 : HI! AFL Don : Maybe others later... AFL Don : What's up? SearsS1205 : LET'S HOPE SO SearsS1205 : NOTHING MUCH AFL Don : Right! first time with us? Don't recall the screen name... SearsS1205 : JUST LOOKING AROUND AFL Don : Well, this is the regular Apple Hardware Chat... SearsS1205 : USUALLY IN THE BEGINNERS FORUM SearsS1205 : WHAT'S NEW IN HARDWARE AFL Don : We usually have a good crowd, but I guess with daylight's savings time, it's going to be light... AFL Don : What computer do you use? SearsS1205 : WHAT'S THE BEST APPLE-2 SOFTWARE FOR A MAC! SearsS1205 : PERFORMA 475 AFL Don : Not familiar with the Performa numbers, is that like an LC? ...that is, can you run a //e emulation card? SearsS1205 : SAME THING AFL Don : Hands down, it's gotta be AppleWorks... Quality has a new version, 4.0, that's great.. AFL Don : I regularly use a PowerBook 170, but do all of my serious spreadsheet stuff with AppleWorks since there's nothing for the Mac that'll touch it, IMHO. SearsS1205 : GOOD, I USE A 2GS AT SCHOOL AFL Don : Student or teacher? SearsS1205 : TEACHER! AFL Don : <---college prof here AFL Don : What do you teach? SearsS1205 : I WISH!! K-5 AFL Don : That's where the important action is... AFL Don : By the time I get 'em, it's almost too late... SearsS1205 : TOO MUCH ACTION! AFL Don : ...as the twig is bent... AFL Don : Taught high school for 10 years, long ago... AFL Don : ...tried to bend a few twigs, but they all snapped back... SearsS1205 : A BENT TWIG CAN BE SPOKED AND STRAIGHTENED AFL Don : How long have you been teaching? SearsS1205 : 21 YEARS!! AFL Don : 36 here... SearsS1205 : A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE. AFL Don : Reminds me, I once asked a colleague, "Ed, how long have you been teaching?" He replied, "I've taught one year 22 times..." SearsS1205 : I UNDERSTAND THAT!!!!!!!!! AFL Don : Actually, I'm retired, but teaching on a post-retirement contract for the last three years... AFL Don : Thought you'd understand it! Teaching is deja vu all over again again again again... SearsS1205 : IT HELPS PAY THE BILLS AFL Don : Right.. AFL Don : What state? SearsS1205 : Where are you from? AFL Don : California... I moved to Colorado for one year, but couldn't make do on the low pay for teachers there, moved back. SearsS1205 : Philadelphia, pa. SearsS1205 : Any earthquake problems? AFL Don : Not here, I'm in Northern California. Wasn't our turn this time. SearsS1205 : There's no place like Home. SearsS1205 : Are you here every Monday? AFL Don : Well, I'd really like to get outa CA, but source taxing has me tied to CA's steep income tax no matter where I move.. yes, I'm here every Monday.. ChuckS1073 : Hmmm...Don. The finder said you weren't in a chat area...:) SearsS1205 : If it weren't for taxes I'd be well-off!!! AFL Don : Great article, Chuck! Everyone should read it... AFL Don : What does the finder know! AFL Don : I'm here! ChuckS1073 : Thanx. ChuckS1073 : hehehe ChuckS1073 : So, what's happening AFL Don : Nothing much... SearsS1205 : Just chewing the fat. AFL Don : Low turnout tonight... AFL Don : Couple of teachers talking shop! AFL Don : BTW, Chuck is a teacher, too... SearsS1205 : The gangs all here, a teaher's nite. ChuckS1073 : So, Sears, where do you teach, and what subject(s)? SearsS1205 : Philly, Music, K-5 AFL Don : <---started out as a music major ChuckS1073 : I'll be darned. (1) Love Philly :) (2) I teach music also...Orff-Schulwerk! SearsS1205 : Handbells, voice, orff... SearsS1205 : Voice or instrumental, Don ChuckS1073 : How long, Orff, that is? I've been at it since around '68...I'm an old geezer ChuckS1073 : :) AFL Don : Reeds. I still play a little for my own amusement, but not in public...teaching myself flute, now... SearsS1205 : 72 ChuckS1073 : Cool! AFL Don : '56 ChuckS1073 : Year or age, Don ? :) AFL Don : '56 is the year I started teaching for pay... AFL Don : ...not counting student teaching... Age 64 here... ChuckS1073 : I'll be 53 in a couple of months. SearsS1205 : Hate to say goodbye, but there're papers I should have graded last week. SearsS1205 : *Goodbye* ChuckS1073 : Slacking off last week , huh? AFL Don : Understand... I've got a 50-question mc test to write tonight... ChuckS1073 : Ugh! AFL Don : ...and the public thinks we work 6-hour days... ChuckS1073 : Don, btw, I had a C.ITOH 1550 given to me the other day... AFL Don : Hello, Marvin! ChuckS1073 : along w/it came a Buffered Grappler + and... AFL Don : That like an ImageWriter? ChuckS1073 : a prograppler. AFL Don : Hello, George! GHutch : Hi Don! AFC Marvin : Hello Don and the rest of the group. ChuckS1073 : Hello George and GH AFL Don : ...not bad for a gift... ChuckS1073 : Seems the printer (a parallel) acts like an imagewriter I... GHutch : whats the topic tonight? AFL Don : Marvin, good thing AO isn't affected by the solar storm... Radio is kaput today, too.. ChuckS1073 : but I couldn't get it to work w/superFonts. AFC Marvin : I know what you mean Don. I was going to set the master clock here at the radio station but cannot AFC Marvin : receive WWV to do it. ChuckS1073 : Discovered that if I configured SF to use the listed NEC driver it works like a charm. :) GHutch : Don, are we experiencing solar flares? AFL Don : No flare, George, but there's a vicious coronal hole that's making the second trip around the sun AFL Don : right now, and it's playing havoc... (Topic tonight, if anyone's interested, is... AFL Don : Overloaded power supply problems.) AFL Don : George, Marvin and I tried to contact Sunday, neither could hear the other. At all... AFC Marvin : Overloaded power supplies can sure fool you at times with strange symptoms. AFL Don : ...same conditions today. GHutch : a vicious coronal hole..whew..and I thought it was just a bad hair day... AFL Don : hello, Sheila! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat! AFC Marvin : A few minutes ago I could not hear either WWV or WWVH so I could not check the time on our master AFC Marvin : clock system. AFL Don : Hello again, Kate! ChuckS1073 : Hi Sheila, Tall. TallStuff : Hi again Don :) AFC Marvin : Hello Sheil and Kate. TallStuff : Hi Chuck TallStuff : Hi there Marvin :) GHutch : what radio station do you work at Marvin? AFL Don : That's unusual, not to be able to hear either station at all! AFL Don : (Marvin's chief engineer for the two most important radio stations in Los Angeles...) AFC Marvin : KFI and KOST in Los Angeles. ChuckS1073 : Don, I must have had some kind of foresight...bought a good powersupply from... AFC Marvin : I could hear a trace of one of the two stations but the tone at the top of the minute was not clean ChuckS1073 : AE about a year ago. Good thing. AFC Marvin : enough to sync the clock to it. AFL Don : Right! That does an end run around a lot of problems. AFL Don : ...enough power supply, that is... AFC Marvin : Chuck I did the same thing for my IIGS several years ago when I found one offered in the AOL classified section. It turned out to be like new and has worked great. It got rid of some strange AFC Marvin : intermittent problems. ChuckS1073 : Really. And I love my new QDrive...especially since it has no drain on sys. ChuckS1073 : I'll never understand why Apple didn't plan for fully loaded machined.... ChuckS1073 : but then who could really understand Apple.... :/ AFC Marvin : Hello AFC Marvin : Walt GHutch : Hi Walt! AFA Fixit : Finally got home! AFL Don : Hi Walt! ChuckS1073 : Hi Walt (Fixit?) GHutch : Did anyone have probs last night with response? AFL Don : I don't think Apple really comprehended what a tremendous machine the 2GS could become... TallStuff : Hiya {{{{{{Fixit}}}}}}}}} ChuckS1073 : ...let alone what a IIe could really do... AFL Don : Didn't get on the system much yesterday... AFA Fixit : {{{{{{TallStuff}}}}}}}}} NuggetHed : Hello? ChuckS1073 : Ni Nugget AFC Marvin : Hello Nugget! NuggetHed : Hi...I was wondering if I could get some advice AFL Don : Advice we've got! AFL Don : What's on your mind, NH? ChuckS1073 : ...I was going to say "advice...:)" NuggetHed : This is concerning accelerators for the IIcx AFL Don : You'll probably get better advice in MHW, since this isn't the Mac area... but we'll try... NuggetHed : What's MHW??? NuggetHed : Mac Hardware?? NuggetHed : Is the keyword MHW? AFL Don : Yes, this AHW, which is Apple-2 Hardware... But you're very welcome here! A lot of us are Mac fans AFL Don : too.. AFL Don : Yes, MHW is the keyword... AFC Marvin : Nugget this is Apple II hardware but I am interested in your question since I had a MacPlus get pulled out of service here at work and is now in my office looking for a job to do. NuggetHed : Ahh, I mistook Apple II for Mac II GHutch : Don or Walt, have either of you installed a localtalk card in an Imagewriter II? ChuckS1073 : Gotta run, check you all later. I'll try to pop back. How late??? AFL Don : Yes, George... NuggetHed : I'm going to go to MHW, Thanks guys AFL Don : Good to see ya, Chuck! You'll be famous soon, when the downloads start on your article! AFC Softy : {{{{{{MrsFixit}}}}} :* :) ChuckS1073 : ...Either that or "infamous" :) AFL Don : ...Not too late, unless more show up... AFC Softy : Hi guys :) TallStuff : {{{{{{{{{MrSofty}}}}}}}}} :* AFL Don : Hello, Larry! AFC Marvin : Hi Larry! GHutch : What's the best deal you've seen on the cards? ChuckS1073 : I'll check by anyway. Btw, played informal host a couple evenings in ABF - :) AFL Don : My college turnkeyed the AppleTalked IW I worked on, so I have no idea what they paid... AFL Don : ...too much, I'll bet. AFL Don : Have you checked CLASSIFIEDS? GHutch : I've seen'm advertised for about $90 AFA Fixit : When it comes to Mac accelerators. I swear by Daystar. AFL Don : Daystar is the only name I recognize... TallStuff : Anyone other then Walt on a sloooooooooow node to China tonight??? AFL Don : Things're nimble here tonight.. GHutch : Walt, you should go for the Power Mac...it's quite the accelerator! AFL Don : Do you have one, George? TallStuff : He sent his Daystar message about the time Nugget was asking about MHW... :/ GHutch : nope, just a wannbe.. AFL Don : Terrific... Chuck said that nobody was showing as being in a chat area, so the system must be near AFC Softy : Becky.... my node is a little sluggish too. :/ AFL Don : saturation. AFC Marvin : Kate, things moving along nicely here for me tonight. I am logged on at 9600. GHutch : I had a strange slow problem last night, couldnt send IMs or chat at all, had to unplug the wire... GHutch : to log off. AFL Don : That's strange for a holiday... TallStuff : Walt'll be right back he's going to try coming into the room again. GHutch : So Don, did the localtalk cards you installed have a buffer built in? AFL Don : Small buffer, I think. Ran one printer from six 2GSs... Very slow, not practical, but it did work. AFL Don : The buffer did work, because when lots of students wanted to print, everything would queue, some would AFL Don : think it wasn't working because the printer'd be putting out somebody else's text... AFC Marvin : I bought a SCSI cable at DI-NO Computers in Pasadena a few days ago. I was surprised to see they were AFC Marvin : printing their invoices with an Imagwriter II. GHutch : So if you were sharing a printer, would you (a) buy the local talk card for an IW2 or.... GHutch : (b) save the dough and go for an inkjet? AFA Fixit : MHW is Macintosh Hardware AFL Don : Forget the IW2... definitely! AFC Softy : Marvin... there are so many IW2's out there... you can't buy a used Apple II or AFC Marvin : I agree with Don on that issue George. I hardly use my IW2 anymore. AFC Softy : Mac system it seems without one in the package. :) AFC Marvin : Yes, I remember when I got my IW2 and thought it was hot stuff. AFL Don : There are some incredible deals on DeskJets now... GHutch : So what printer would you all recommend? AFC Softy : Sometime I want to buy a used IIgs system, pay the asking price and tell them AFC Softy : they can keep the IW2. ;) AFC Softy : (actually, I'd probably donate it to a school instead.) GHutch : I saw a used IW2 at a dealer-an old white case one! they wanted $100 for it! TallStuff : LOL Larry :) We haven't used our IW2 since I moved out to CA 3 years ago!!! AFC Softy : Don... I found a real good deal in DeskJets... my girlfriend's sister started AFC Softy : working for Office Depot today. :) GHutch : Do the deskjets come with localtalk built in? AFL Don : No, George. Wow, that's an in if I ever heard of one. Actually, the closeout prices on the DJ 500 for anyone are hard to resist. I've got one, and I can hardly resist buying another one.. AFC Softy : (they have the 560c's in stock now at $549... less the "discount" ;) AFL Don : $240 is one price I heard for new DJ500s AFC Softy : The 520? AFL Don : No, on localtalk... if you get a DJ, to use it with a 2GS, you'll need Harmonie if you want to print from GS/OS programs... It'll work, after a fashion, with effort, as is with p8 programs. GHutch : Got Harmonie, but I need to be able to share it with a mac. AFL Don : ...but it works SO good with GS/OS, you won't do much printing from P8... AFL Don : I use my DeskJet 500 to print from my PowerBook 170, with a freebie driver available online, it works great with the Mac. ...a little slow, but not unacceptably slow. You can use a DeskWriter with the 2GS, to print from GS/OS programs only, for better compatibility with the Mac... But there aren't the good deals pricewise on the DWs... ...and you can't print from P8 programs with the DW... GHutch : Right now I have to swap cables to "share" the IW2 and it is a royal pain. AFA Fixit : Lately I've noted no difference in price between the DW and DJ in the ads I've seen around here. TallStuff : afk... brb AFL Don : My system, sharing computers/printers, is hard to beat. No switching. AFA Fixit : Why don't you spend $10 on a serial A/B switch? AFC Softy : The DW works better on the Mac because it uses QuickDraw directly, doesn't it? AFC Softy : I never have understood that. :/ AFL Don : I have my IW2 fed from the printer port, the DeskJet fed from a parallel card. GHutch : Always a practial suggestion Walt :-) AFL Don : ...can print to either without switching. AFL Don : Since the DJ has both a serial and parallel input, I have a serial cable deadended into the printer's AFL Don : serial input, just plug that into my PowerBook when I want to print from the Mac... AFL Don : No switching... GHutch : Well i have just a modem/printer port to work with on the GS so it's switcheroo cable land... AFL Don : I'm not sure now much faster a DW would be than the DJ with the neat freeware driver I use, but it AFL Don : couldn't be too much faster, I think. AFC Softy : ..or you can get one of those more expensive A/B boxes that switch on the fly GHutch : ..allthis to be able to network to the Mac... TallStuff : Well I'm going to head out... see ya'll next week TallStuff : >LaTassle Poof< AFC Softy : if you don't like messing around with buttons. :) AFL Don : I can print from the Mac at about the same speed as Harmonie prints through the parallel card. ...maybe a tad slower GHutch : Hmmm, I still think the localtalk card will solve the problem... AFL Don : I wouldn't trade it for the setup I use. AFC Softy : Walt.... you said last week you had found a manual for the SmartOne modem? AFA Fixit : Well, you can put it all on the network. AFA Fixit : Yes I did. AFC Softy : Is there anything in it that can help get this problem I've had for a while AFC Softy : fixed? AFC Softy : As in.... does it need to have any features turned off for AOL? AFA Fixit : It doesn't say anything about AOL. AFC Softy : Well the modem works on the client's IIgs for other things... but they can't AFC Softy : get signed on to AOL with it. AFA Fixit : Might try AT&F&W if that hasn't been tried yet. AFL Don : The answer lies in the setup string, I'll bet... GHutch : Well, thanks for the chat all, i'm off to tv news land! AFC Softy : They do use manual dial.... but all they have in the string is...: AFC Marvin : G'night George. AFL Don : Good to have you with us, George! Hurry back... AFC Softy : AT 9,xxx-xxxx AFL Don : That's not the setup string... that doesn't reset the Hayes softswitches that reconfigure the modem. AFC Softy : Obviously the 9 is for getting an outside line. AFL Don : Can you get in the command mode, type AT &F ? AFL Don : That'll set the modem back to factory paramaters.. AFL Don : Hello, Chris, Steff! AFC Softy : I dunno Don... I've never tried manual dial before. ChrisGurn : Hi Don! AFA Fixit : The modem doesn't seem to support any error correction. AFL Don : Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat! Steff J : Hi Don AFL Don : That should be good news for AO use, I'd think.. ChrisGurn : Softy, I've had probs w/ my modem in rgds to aol. but it was corrected ChrisGurn : once I went into manual dial _once_ to set the modem to 2400 baud. ChrisGurn : I'm assuming that's what you're all talking about. AFL Don : That's probably what needs to be done... AFL Don : Yes, Chris! Steff J : I'm just eaves dropping.... AFC Softy : This modem is a 2400... so it can't go any faster.. :) AFA Fixit : The manual does have a number for tech support. 818-786-2884. ChrisGurn : oh, wow. AFL Don : Be our guest, Steff! Glad to have you with us! ChrisGurn : I say it because, I have a 14.4 and it was acting funky when going on to aol. AFC Softy : It's a SmartOne 2400x :) ChrisGurn : I had to slow it down (sad to say) for aol. AFC Softy : (btw.... some people have been claiming they are getting into AOL at 14.4 from AFL Don : ...If something has &C1, &D2 inappropriately, the bad settings can persist until you reset the modem. ChrisGurn : Softy, I play w/ BBSs a lot (well, on them) and like to ... AFC Softy : the Mac and PC software :) Steff J : well thanks..anyone have any info on Bitcom/Bitfax software ChrisGurn : I heard that too Softy. There's number to call. You didn't hear it AFL Don : I think they're smokin' the drapes again, Larry... ChrisGurn : from me tho. AFA Fixit : The fastest I've been able to connect with the Mac is 9600. No 14.4kbps access lines are listed. ChrisGurn : anyone know when AW GS 2.0 is coming out? AFC Softy : Don... these are people who have SupraFax Modems which show the speed rate AFA Fixit : Can only do that from work. AFC Softy : on the front panel. AFC Marvin : I have topped out at 9600 on AOL too. AFL Don : I don't think SprintNet supports anything faster'n 9600... ChrisGurn : Now that's only using a Mac, right? AFA Fixit : And SprintNet is the only service that AOL supports 9600 access from. AFL Don : Maybe that's a calculated transfer rate, not the actual baud rate.... ChrisGurn : bastage's. AFC Softy : Don... that's what SprintNet says. Steff J : Enjoy your evening fellows..thanks for the hospitality AFA Fixit : No, the number listed on the display is the signal rate. AFL Don : Hello, Tallula! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat! AFL Don : Bye Steff! Hurry back! Tallula188 : Thanx! AFC Softy : Ya know it could be the modem is being fooled into thinking it's at 14.4. AFA Fixit : That's rather hard to do. AFL Don : Gee, wish I could fool my modem into going faster'n 2400! AFC Softy : But someone claims to have backed it up by downloading a large file and the AFC Softy : time it took corresponded to being hooked up at 14.4. AFA Fixit : Get the phone number they connected with. AFL Don : I almost always beat the listed dl times when I download a long file... AFC Softy : I'll try if I can Walt... :) AFC Marvin : I have noticed the same thing Don. AFC Softy : That's true Don... I downloaded a "62 min" file last week in 42 minutes. AFL Don : AO does its own compression on files, and that tends to speed up the transfers, depending upon Tallula188 : Does Apple !! Hardware mean printers..if so does anyone know about new 800dpi?? AFL Don : the data and amount of compression it'll stand for... AFC Softy : (neat little game over in AGM.... :) AFL Don : Sure on printers, except that I don't know of any drivers for Apple-2 printers that'll do better'n AFL Don : 300 dpi... AFL Don : So, even if the printer is capable of higher dpi rates, such as the HP520's 600 dpi, you wouldn't Tallula188 : What about 600dpi...seems like a lotta people are using them. Have to make sure APDs or PPDs enclosed AFL Don : see it from an Apple-2 until somebody writes an upgraded driver. AFC Softy : Whoops... I gotta boogie... Walt... I'll try the &F&W string with them and see AFC Softy : what happens. :) AFA Fixit : Any PostScript driver will take advantage of the resolution of the target device, but those are AFC Softy : Catch ya next week :) AFA Fixit : rare on the Apple II. AFL Don : Good luck Larry, I'll bet that works.. Tallula188 : Wait a minute....Apple !!? Is that Performa? AFL Don : No Tallula, this isn't the Mac area... This is the Apple-2 Hardware Forum... AFC Softy : Nope... it's Apple II... you probably need the Macintosh Hardware Forum :) Tallula188 : I'm using Mac IIcx and Mac IIvx...am I in the wrong room? AFC Marvin : Goodnight Larry! AFC Softy : 'nite guys :) AFL Don : G'nite Larry! Tallula188 : thanx.... AFC Softy : Tallula188 : What's the keyword for Mac Hardware Forum? AFA Fixit : MHW AFA Fixit : MHW AFL Don : MHW AFC Marvin : MHW Tallula188 : thanx again! AFL Don : Gee, we all agree! AFA Fixit : Wait, I only typed that once! AFL Don : Hurry back, you're always welcome here! AFA Fixit : Well, I'm off to bed. AFL Don : Thanks again Walt... CUL... AFC Marvin : Goodnight Walt. I should say goodnight too and head for home and a late dinner. I am still at the AFC Marvin : office. AFA Fixit : You're still getting out of the office earlier than I did tonight. AFL Don : I should QRT here, too, start writing my test... AFA Fixit : Night guys AFL Don : Nite, Walt.. AFC Marvin : :) 4/4/94 7:10:47 PM Closing Log file.
