10/10/94 6:27:58 PM Opening ÒChat Log 10/10/94Ó for recording. AFL Don : Hello, Panther! PINKPATHER : good evening AFA Fixit : Hiya Panther. AFL Don : Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum chat, such as it is... AFL Don : Been with us before? Don't recognize the screen name... PINKPATHER : I came hear tonight to see if I can get technical support for an Apple lab PINKPATHER : Came the other day they told me to come to you guys AFL Don : We'll help if we can... PINKPATHER : Your suppose to be the Appletechnical wizards AFL Don : ...remains to be seen, I guess... AFL Don : What do you need to know? AFA Fixit : More like geezers anymore... PINKPATHER : I have seem to run into a problem while trying to format 3 1/2" on an Apple PINKPATHER : when I try to format it tells me write protect enabled, but the write protect hole is cover AFL Don : What kind of Apple? 2GS? //e? What utility are you using to do the formatting? PINKPATHER : 2gs and 2e AFL Don : Are you sure the disks are good? PINKPATHER : brand new disk tried 4 of them AFA Fixit : I have a drive that complains about certain brands. PINKPATHER : its a sony 2d disk AFL Don : Never have found a bad one... do you have just the one drive? AFA Fixit : I have to put a bit of tape over the back of the write protect hole. PINKPATHER : no, on the 2gs I have a 5-1/4 that works fine, and the 2e has 1 internal PINKPATHER : I haven't tried the tape but sounds like a good idea AFL Don : 2e has 1 internal???? AFL Don : Do you have Copy2Plus? AFA Fixit : It works for me. PINKPATHER : no don't have that one AFL Don : you can do a Verify to check the media, that might help... AFL Don : Have you tried using GS/OS 6.0.1 to do the formatting? DenSand : Hello, what's the discussion currently about? DenSand : :) AFL Don : Hello, DenSand... We're trying to solve a formatting problem for PinkPanther... PINKPATHER : no I don't have that either AFA Fixit : Disks that think they're write protected when they're not. AFL Don : What utility are you using? PINKPATHER : ProDos and the system disk PINKPATHER : neither work DenSand : 5.25 or 3.5? PINKPATHER : 3.5 DenSand : big or small floppy? AFL Don : What level GS/OS do you use? PINKPATHER : small DenSand : Well, surely you've tried moving the write protect switch around. PINKPATHER : I don't AFL Don : You have just the one 3.5-inch drive? PINKPATHER : yes both sides PINKPATHER : on the 2gs I have a 5.25 works fine PINKPATHER : on the 2e just the one internal DenSand : yes both sides? Do all your 3.5 disks think they're write-protected? AFL Don : Are you using a UniDisk 3.5 on the //e? //e computers don't have an internal drive, I'm confused PINKPATHER : yes all the sonys PINKPATHER : the 2e is the old ones that everything is built in ,right? DenSand : But, all other brands can be formatted? AFL Don : Do you mean 2c? DenSand : When I said brands I meant brands of floppy disk. PINKPATHER : that might be it, i'm still not use to the apples AFL Don : The early 2c's couldn't support a 3.5-inch drive until the motherboard was upgraded... (free, but you DenSand : Yeah, if you have an Apple with an internal disk it must be a 2c. AFL Don : had to ask...) AFA Fixit : IIc+ DenSand : Now if you're referring to a disk drive without a card... PINKPATHER : maybe, but I get the same effect on the 2gs DenSand : you must be referring to a smartport. DenSand : Hi Cuddly1 PINKPATHER : smartport? DenSand : Hey, I have a IIgs (limited edition). DenSand : Yeah, AFL Don : Too bad you don't have other utilities. Like a mechanic trying to work on a car with only 1 little screwdriver... DenSand : A Smart¹ort is just a place in the back of an Applewhere you just... PINKPATHER : how can I get more utillities for the lab AFL Don : Smartport is the 2GS feature where several drives can be daisychained... DenSand : "cable connect" your disk drive to the computer. Elie2 : Hi DenSand : Howdy AFL Don : I use GS/OS for almost all the disk manipulations I do... AFL Don : Hello, Elie! DenSand : I'm from Texas. AFA Fixit : Hi Elie2 AFL Don : How much memory do you have in the 2GS? PINKPATHER : where can I get gs/os Cuddly1 : ::Watching from my usual corner:: PINKPATHER : I have no idea Elie2 : I'm from Delaware, but right now I'm calling from college in Oregon. AFL Don : You can download it from the AHW library, from the From Apple section. DenSand : They can give it to you over the phone if you want it (I think). PINKPATHER : the problem is I am doing a favor for my sister AFA Fixit : You can download it from the forum Library. Cuddly1 : Ellie what part of Delaware are you from?? Elie2 : Newark AFL Don : But if you don't have at least 1-Mb, preferably more, it won't do you any good. PINKPATHER : I'm on an IBM it won't work AFA Fixit : Used to work in Newark. Cuddly1 : Fixit and I live down in Smyrna DenSand : Jokingly: "Yeah, I have a whole meg of memory for my gs." AFL Don : The utility on the ProDos 8 system disk should work, though. IamDracula : Hi everybody. Elie2 : Neat. I've been down there lots of times. AFL Don : Hello, Dracula! AFL Don : Hello, Marvin! IamDracula : Hello Cuddly1 : Hey there Marvin :) AFC Marvin : Hello Don and the group. PINKPATHER : what up drac AFA Fixit : Hi Dracula, Marvin. Elie2 : Is there protocol tonight. I have a couple of questions. Elie2 : Hi guys. DenSand : Hi PINKPATHER : hi ellie2 IamDracula : Just wanted to see what was going on Panther AFA Fixit : Protocal? What's that? DenSand : What's your question, Elie2? AFL Don : Marvin, Panther is having trouble formatting 3.5 inch disks, he's always told to take off write PINKPATHER : trying to get help with the apples Elie2 : 2 questions, actually... AFL Don : protection even though it's off.. Elie2 : In my move from Del. to here, my HD apparently got damaged because System 601 Elie2 : is saying "your drive is physically damaged". What can I do? IamDracula : Well I'm going to watch a little monday night football and I'll be back at 11:30. Elie2 : Bye, drac AFL Don : Panther, my guesses are 1) there may be something wrong with the 3.5-inch drive and 2) there may be some challenge the ProDos 8 utility can't handle (unlikely) PINKPATHER : later Drac DenSand : Yeah, and doesn't he say that every time it is only with Sony brand disks? AFL Don : ...but try the tape deal first... PINKPATHER : I was going to try the tape AFL Don : No, Den, I think Sony's are all he has. They should be good... PINKPATHER : I have another problem with the 2c DenSand : Oh, I knew something very obvious (I don't know what, though) must be wrong. AFL Don : What happens when you read a previously-formatted disk, is everything ok? AFC Marvin : I have used Sony disks and have never had trouble with my IIGS. PINKPATHER : yes all the disk read fine, haven't had a problem yet AFC Marvin : I was going to ask if you could write to previously formatted disks? DenSand : Yeah, I have some Sonys, and they work fine. Elie2 : Who are you talking to, Don? AFL Don : You might try plugging, unplugging the 3.5-inch drive to cycle the contacts on the plugs... Elie2 : Oh, sorry... PINKPATHER : I only have original 3.5 disk AFA Fixit : What's wrong with the hard drive? PINKPATHER : I can write to 5.25 and format them AFL Don : Panther, Elie... He's the one with the problem... DenSand : good good Elie2 : When I try to load, save, run, or delete certain files, I get that message. DenSand : On both 3.5 and 5.25? PINKPATHER : I have another problem besides the formatting with another computer AFA Fixit : I'd back up, reformat and start over. AFL Don : How old is the system disk you're using to format? You can download the latest Apple utilities... DenSand : Yeah, it might be the track/sector map. Elie2 : Would that fix the "physically damaged" problem? AFA Fixit : It should. AFL Don : Maybe your system disk predates the 3.5-inch drives, Panther... AFC Marvin : Just a thought Pather... is the protection on the disks really off? The protection hole should be Elie2 : Ok. Is there a newer system formatter than the one that came with 601? PINKPATHER : I haven't thought of that AFC Marvin : covered which is the opposite of the way it is with the 5.25 disks. AFA Fixit : Give the tape trick a try AFL Don : Good thought, Marvin! I'll bet you hit on it! That was once a common error! AFL Don : The window has to be closed to write to the disk, not open... PINKPATHER : besides download utilities is there any way I can get them (I'm on my IBM comp.) AFC Marvin : I still get confused on that after all the 5.25 disks I used to use. PINKPATHER : I know about the windows, but i'll try the tape DenSand : I tried to communicate that earlier but was unsuccessful. DenSand : about the protection slot. AFL Don : You could check the catalogs of Quality Computers, Charlie's AppleSeeds, etc., buy the utility... AFA Fixit : Well, I have to get to bed. Night folks PINKPATHER : I know open slot mean protected, closed means writable Elie2 : Bye Fixit AFL Don : thanks Walt, CU AFC Marvin : Hello and goodbye Walt! PINKPATHER : thanks fixit, later days DenSand : Bye Elie2. Cuddly1 : I'm outta here to :) Nytol ;) PINKPATHER : now I need help with another problem AFA Fixit : Night DenSand : Ooops. I meant Fixit. Elie2 : I have another question for someone that I think I'm entitled to ask because PINKPATHER : but you can let ellie go first Elie2 : of what AOL is doing to us? Does someone know where and how I can contact Elie2 : GEnie to become a member? Elie2 : Sorry. I can't see the screen and type at the same time? AFL Don : Check out the area called "Across The Boards", you'll see it in the Apple Hardware Forum Menu.. DenSand : Oh, hey I can answer this one. AFL Don : There are a number of posts that outline the procedure... AFL Don : ...in Across The Boards... DenSand : Elie2, if you are not a member just call 1-800-555-1212 (the international... DenSand : directory assistance) and ask for the number to America Online and they will... AFL Don : They have a special offer for AOL members who've been bumped because they're Apple 2, a good deal AFL Don : with $50 credit against time. Elie2 : OK. Thanks. I really want to keep up with the local message boards. Thanks. AFL Don : ...but remember, if you have a Mac or Windows, you can still remain on America Online... DenSand : give it to you. Call and they will send you free software and 10 free time. DenSand : 10 hours. Elie2 : All I have is my trusty IIGS. DenSand : Me too. Elie2 : Are you a member of another board? AFL Don : Only the BBS I sysop... DenSand : What if I went off AOL for 6 months till I got my new computer... DenSand : would they still include me in their free offer? Elie2 : Well, I'm a charter member of AOL. I've been here since the beginning and I Elie2 : feel kind of cheated. AFL Don : I think so, but not if you've had a Genie account before... AFL Don : Which rules out a lot of us who sampled Genie, didn't like it, left... PINKPATHER : Elie what board do you sysop AFL Don : To be fair about it, if all you've seen of AOL is what they've opened to the Apple 2, you have NO idea what amazing things they've added. It's a whole 'nuther world here, now, and the Apple 2 has not had access to what AOL has become for the Mac and for Windows... Elie2 : I don't. Don said that. AFL Don : I sysop a board at the college where I teach. Nothing much. PINKPATHER : cool Elie2 : Unfortunately, I have to go...Studytime. I'm not sure if I'll see any of you Elie2 : later, so godspeed to you all. AFL Don : Good luck, Elie! PINKPATHER : later days, Elie AFC Marvin : And if you sign on with a MS-Dos computer you will still see another area of AOL in addition to what you see with the Mac computers. It became apparent some time ago that logging on with my IIGS on AOL left a lot to be desired. PINKPATHER : All right guys, I have another brain teaser for you AFL Don : Sock it to us, as they used to say on "Laugh In"... PINKPATHER : The 2c in the lab won't boot, all I get is a checker board PINKPATHER : and it was working fine yesterday AFC Marvin : I would try booting after disconnecting all external devices from the IIc. The idea is to minimize PINKPATHER : ??? PINKPATHER : I have no other external drives just the one internal AFL Don : What do you get when you run the internal diagnostic test? PINKPATHER : I haven't run it yet how do I do it AFC Marvin : the amount of power taken from the computer. It might be that the power supply is or has failed. AFL Don : Start up while holding down the OA and CA keys... AFC Marvin : If not a power supply problem then it might Remainder of log missing from file...
