3/28/94 9:44:13 PM Opening ÒAHWlog3/28/94Ó for recording. AFA AndyW : Hi Larry... AFC Softy : Hi Walt :) AFC Softy : Re Andy :) AFA Fixit : Hi Larry. Found a manual for the problem SmartOne modem you've been dealing with. AFC Softy : Hey... that's great. :) AFC Softy : Does it do me any good tho? :) AFC Softy : (or to put it more accurately... does it do my client any good? ;) AFA Fixit : Technical Data usually helps. AFA Fixit : I was under the impression that your client didn't have a manual. AFC Softy : She didn't... she got her info from the person in charge of setting up the AFC Softy : systems at her school. AFA Fixit : Hi Jack! Welcome to the Apple II Hardware chat. AFC Softy : ..and that wasn't much. Jack 12345 : Hey there Walt. AFA Fixit : Actually I found two manuals in two different locations in the past week. AFC Softy : Anyway... they use the modem with the IIgs to access FredMail and one other AFC Softy : BBS which I can't recall at the moment. AFA Fixit : America Online tends to be pickier than a BBS. AFC Softy : They also can get into the local AOL node okay... but then they hit a wall at AFC Softy : the Stratus end. AFA AndyW : I got a USR Sportster 144 modem last week.. It actually works on AOL without AFC Softy : I had them change the Modem Port settings to the ones AOL seems to like disabling protocol.. Jack 12345 : Yah know what would be nice? If, when you enter a conf, AOL sent like the last 20 messages so you Jack 12345 : could get a clue as to what was going on ;) AFC Softy : Jack... not a bad idea. :) AFA AndyW : That would take up too much system resources.. AFA Fixit : Would be nice. AFA Fixit : AFK BRB AFA AndyW : If they can't even handle system news.... AFC Softy : Even 10 lines worth would be good. :) AFC Softy : Oh... I found out that the HP 560c will work with the Harmonie HP drivers... Jack 12345 : how long can it take to send 250 characters? AFA AndyW : 250? Jack 12345 : just a rough guess.. AFA Fixit : BAK AFC Softy : ... you still only get the 550's 300x300 resolution. but then you still get a printer with room for improvement. AFA AndyW : It would be 800 or 1600 possible.. AFA AndyW : (10 or 20 lines) Jack 12345 : ah, but not every line is 80 characters AFA AndyW : True, but they'd have to allow for it anyway.. AFC Softy : But the Mac and PC platforms have chat lines longer than 80 chars. Jack 12345 : still, you get more than that when you look at a file description or a conf message Jack 12345 : (kinda like that one?) AFA AndyW : Absolute max characters on any platform is 127.. (0 terminated) AFC Softy : And if anyone uses OE's "read in chat text" feature... ;) Jack 12345 : hmm... let's see AFA AndyW : That can go very fast.. AFC Softy : Hi MrMajik :) AFA Fixit : Hi MrMajik. Welcome to the Apple II Hardware chat! Jack 12345 : 12345678901234567890 12345678901234567890 12345678901234567890 123456789012345678901234567890123456789012 Jack 12345 : 102 on a Mac AFA AndyW : That's because of the font.. AFA AndyW : Smaller fonts would allow more characters.. AFC Softy : Andy... can ya email that to me... I don't have a pen handy to write it down. AFC Softy : :/ Jack 12345 : so, if I used like 4 point, I could get 127 chars? AFA AndyW : Should always have a pen Larry! AFC Softy : I usually do.... just not at the moment. :o AFC Softy : Hang on.... AFC Softy : Still have the IM queued.... Jack 12345 : So what's cooking? AFA AndyW : Hmm.. There's a 2-character token, the text and a CR.. More like 125.. AFC Softy : :::fumbling for pen::: Jack 12345 : Hey Walt, got any recommendations as to where to buy my PowerMac in the DELMARVA area? AFC Softy : Got it... :) AFA AndyW : Found a pen huh? AFA AndyW : I see you're still on the old one! AFC Softy : Yup.... took some diggin' AFC Softy : Old what?? Version? AFA AndyW : BTW, there's a B13 version floating around.. AFA Fixit : Computer City on Concord Pike in Wilmington. Good prices and no sales tax. AFC Softy : I'm using the last version you sent me. AFA AndyW : Someone decided to pass it around.. It's in an archive that says it's B14.. AFA AndyW : I don't remember what the last beta version was that I send.. Jack 12345 : what's that a Bic V13 pen? AFC Softy : B15 AFA AndyW : Ok.. AFA AndyW : So someone is passing out a very old version! Jack 12345 : The CC in MD stinks. What's the price for a 6100 8/160? AFA AndyW : The release has quite a lot that b15 didn't have.. AFC Softy : I'm pretty sure it's b15... :) AFA AndyW : Hi Frank.. AFC Softy : Frrrrrrrrrrrankie! :D AFA Fixit : Hiya Frank. BCS Frank : Andy, y'all, Hi! :) Jack 12345 : Howdy Frank BCS Frank : What's "b15?" And is that legal? AFA AndyW : Talking about OE Frank.. BCS Frank : Ahhh.... ok Jack 12345 : Walt, that 'No sales tax' part sounds good :) AFA AndyW : I was telling Larry that someone has let the beta 13 version of OE out.. AFA Fixit : I haven't been up there, but the Computer City I bought Kate's Apple CD 300 had it for about $40 AFA Fixit : less than anywhere else I shopped. Jack 12345 : $40!!!!???? AFC Softy : I wished I was in San Diego now... a dealer down there is giving away a PB180c Jack 12345 : oh... AFC Softy : Last day to enter the drawing is the 30th. AFC Softy : AFA AndyW : If you get there, register for me too Larry! Jack 12345 : I'm looking to buy the cheapest most stripped down PPC I can AFC Softy : At least I called my girl friend and asked her to go enter for me. BCS Frank : Then get a 650 and the upgrade board. AFC Softy : Jack 12345 : what's her number? Jack 12345 : ;) AFC Softy : Told her I'd buy a PC and swap her the PB for it. ;) AFC Softy : (IF she won... :D) BCS Frank : Then got her an original Tandy 1000? AFA AndyW : Hi Sunny! Jack 12345 : Anybody read the PPC messages in the MHW area? BCS Frank : not me Jack 12345 : More than half were gripes about CompUSA & ComputerCity BCS Frank : yet Jack 12345 : turned out it was their last one BCS Frank : ReWalt! :) AFC Softy : re's Walt :) AFA Fixit : Phone line temporarily died. :( Jack 12345 : Walt, can you get me a number for that Computer City you mentioned? Jack 12345 : <-Not driving to Del in order to find out they ain't got none BCS Frank : akkk... phone lines should be sacred; not allowed to die! AFA Fixit : Don't have it handy. Suggest you call 302-555-1212 and ask. Jack 12345 : Wilmington, right? AFA Fixit : Yep. Jack 12345 : OK Jack 12345 : If they don't have it, I'll tool up to Philly & check around there AFA Fixit : Sales tax up there. Jack 12345 : & If they don't have it.. I'll go to J&R in NYC Jack 12345 : and I'll end up paying $200 in gas to save $50 ;) AFA Fixit : Hope you like driving. AFA AndyW : Hi Marvin.. AFA Fixit : Marvin! AFC Marvin : Hello everybody! AFA Fixit : I'd call the Computer City in Fair Oaks before I'd tool up the NYC. Jack 12345 : Uh Oh! the wife's home... AFA Fixit : Quick! Hide the computer! Jack 12345 : J&R had a price of $1649 for the 6100 8/160 sounded pretty good to me Jack 12345 : (It's her computer ;) AFC Marvin : Oh! I see what you are worried about Jack. AFC Marvin : A fellow worker bought a 660AV over the weekend for $1500. I think he told me it had 16 megs of ram AFA Fixit : Doesn't strike me as all too great when Apple's suggesting a system can be put together for $2000. Jack 12345 : BTW, anyone want to buy a BRAND NEW 160 meg HD in a couple of days? AFC Marvin : and about a 300 meg hard drive. AFA Fixit : But, I haven't shopped PowerMacs at all yet. AFC Softy : I've seen the CPU under $1600.... AFC Softy : $1597 to be exact.... but that's out here in CA. AFA Fixit : I couldn't see buying anything less than a 7100 myself. Gotta have those Nubus slots. Jack 12345 : I don't know where Apple thinks you can get a decent monitor for <$400 AFC Softy : Walt... if you use the Apple Basic monitor ($249?) and standard keyboard Jack 12345 : If I needed slots, I'd wait for the PCI PowerMac AFC Softy : at $129.... it comes in under 2 large.. AFC Softy : Apple Basic monitor is the same they use with the Performas. It's a VGA. AFA Fixit : Apple Basic monitor? Yuck!!! AFA Fixit : It's a poor excuse for a VGA monitor. AFC Softy : Uh huh.... but it proves Apple didn't lie about the $2000 price. Jack 12345 : Hey, Apple didn't say you'd like it, they just said you could AFC Softy : Even the Basic Plus sucks.... :) Jack 12345 : At least they didn't try to price it with a floppy only :) AFA Fixit : Had a 21" Nanao monitor that the PC folks salivate over and found it lacking in almost every way. AFC Softy : Some people think the Basic monitor is great.... it's more or less the same AFA Fixit : Or a 40mb hard drive. AFC Softy : monitor you see packaged with DOS systems. :) AFA Fixit : I hear schools returned the Apple Basic monitor in truckloads. Jack 12345 : It amazes me that people will pay through the nose for the fastest PC they can get and then slap any Jack 12345 : old crummy monitor on it AFC Softy : Probably why I see dealers offering them as "factory reconditioned" units. Jack 12345 : I always say... Pay for the monitor... It won't be obsolete next month, the PC will AFA Fixit : Personally, I prefer monochrome monitors for most work. AFC Softy : I'm seeing a lot of Centris systems being advertised as "reconditioned" too. AFA Fixit : Even the sharpest color monitor is fuzzy in comparison. AFC Softy : ...AND "PowerPC upgradable" Jack 12345 : This PowerMac will be the third system I've had, still the same monitor AFA Fixit : There are people that are thinking of buying IIvx's to upgrade to 7100's. AFC Softy : Jack... I'd be careful about the PMacs. I'm seeing all sorts of gripes posted AFC Softy : in MHW about how their old monitors won't work with the PMacs. AFA Fixit : Don't have time to hang out in MHW anymore. AFA Fixit : I suspect a lot of third party 13" and 14" monitors will have problems. Jack 12345 : I'm pretty sure mine will work, it works with just about anything AFA Fixit : Same problem as the LC. AFC Softy : Has something to do with "sync on green"... or something like that. AFC Marvin : Larry, do you see any trends in the nature of the gripes about the PMacs? AFA Fixit : No sync on green. AFA AndyW : <- everything is green here! AFC Softy : That of course is if you want to use the onboard video.... AFA Fixit : My old Magnavox Mac Color Display needs sync on green. AFC Softy : Marvin.... nothing notable.... the monitor problems are the only thing that Jack 12345 : Is the problem that the PPC doesn't supply sync on green, or their monitor doesn't support it? AFC Softy : stick out. Most of the other gripes come from people who had greater AFA Fixit : The PPC doesn't supply it. AFA AndyW : Anyone know where I can get a real cheap RGB monitor for my GS? AFC Softy : expectations about emulation performance. Jack 12345 : how cheap is real cheap? AFA Fixit : Real Cheap, RGB and GS don't usually go together. AFA AndyW : Well, how cheap can I get one? Jack 12345 : MacUser was a little deceptive with their MacBench results AFC Softy : Quality is sold out of the Magnavox's they used to sell for around $250. AFA AndyW : I'll probably still use the Monitor /// most of the time, but for writing AFA AndyW : desktop stuff, I'd need a color monitor to check the looks.. AFA Fixit : Not a lot of makers of CGA monitors. Especially ones that support analog input. AFC Softy : Andy... check with Alltech... they probably have used ones in decent shape. AFC Softy : Or Sun Remarketing. Jack 12345 : Most new monitors won't sync that low AFA AndyW : Anyone got their numbers? AFC Softy : Or even Shreve Systems.... now that I think of it. They have some Apple II Jack 12345 : Isn't the GS monitor the same as the 12" they sold with the LC? AFC Softy : stuff also. AFC Softy : Nope Jack.... different animal. Jack 12345 : hmm, though I heard somewhere that is was AFA Fixit : Try Shreve, 800-227-3971, they had Apple's monitor for $229 in July of last year. AFA AndyW : Sounds like they're in VA.. AFA Fixit : AllTech is 800-995-7773. I've always found Sun Remarketing to be overpriced. AFC Softy : Shreve is in LA. AFC Softy : (that's LA as in Louisiana. :) AFC Softy : There is also a company in the Bay Area that sells used Apple II systems now. AFA Fixit : Once upon a time. Alltech advertised an Atari GS compatible RGB monitor for $149. AFA AndyW : Oh.. Sounds weird that the 800-227 exchange exists in VA and LA! AFC Softy : They are geared more towards schools... but they'd probably sell to anyone. AFA AndyW : I guess I'll have to call both places and see what they've got (if anything) AFC Marvin : Andy, the 800 rules have changed now so that a prefix can be just about anywhere. You can even move your 800 number from one carrier to another now. Or maybe this starts April 1994. If it has not started yet it will soon. AFC Softy : Whoops... I have to get outta here. Catchya all later. :) BCS Frank : Bye :) AFA AndyW : Confuse everyone I guess.. Jack 12345 : Nah, most of us didn't know there were rules to start with Jack 12345 : Ah well, guess I'll go see the wife before I forget what she looks like Jack 12345 : bye y'all BCS Frank : ...Bye Jack
