10/17/94 6:43:59 PM Opening ÒChat Log 10/17/94Ó for recording. ROMANHLIDY : Hi AFA Don : Hi! AFA Don : Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat... AFA Fixit : Hi folks! AFA Don : Hello, Walt... Just got here myself, really tough time getting on tonight... AFA Don : Hi Kate... AFA Don : First time with us, Roman? Cuddly1 : Hiya Don :) Cuddly1 : AFA Don??? AFA Fixit : Name change Don? AFA Don : yeah, right... AFA Don : AFL Don is kaput... ROMANHLIDY : I got an old 64K IIe and it always says "RAM 000001" and sometimes "RAM"000010? ROMANHLIDY : what is wrong? AFA Don : You have a bad ram chip... AFA Don : I think it's on the 80-column card.. ROMANHLIDY : how do i fix it? AFA Fixit : Sounds like you have a bad RAM chip on the motherboard ROMANHLIDY : no RAM card just on the motherboard AFA Fixit : Do you have an 80-column card? AFA Don : Maybe so, I'm not up to speed on the codes... ROMANHLIDY : no, just 8-9 chips on the motherboard WileyMO : is David around tonite? AFA Don : You mean you're running it in 40-column mode???? AFA Don : Who's David? ROMANHLIDY : I guess? WileyMO : An Apple II kinda guy from Michigan ROMANHLIDY : all I have is 2 5 1/2 drive cards and a printer card AFA Don : That's VERY unusual... AFA Fixit : For starters I'd make sure that all the chips are well seated in the motherboard but firmly but gently AFA Fixit : pushing them back into the sockets. ROMANHLIDY : There all soldered AFA Fixit : Not a happy scenario. AFA Don : Do you see any lower-case characters on screen? AFA Don : oops AFA Don : Oh well... AFA Fixit : What happens if you enter PR#3 at an Applesoft prompt? AFA Don : He's gone... AFA Fixit : Two 5 1/2 drive cards?? AFA Fixit : Too bad, I was looking up the codes. AFA Fixit : I also have a spare //e motherboard. AFA Don : ...busy trip for me, wife's 45th H.S. reunion Saturday night... AFA Don : ...delightful evening of denture breath and baloney. Cuddly1 : LOL!! AFA Don : What is his code? I sure thought it was pointing to the 80-column card. AFA Fixit : He's got a RAM failure, but it's hard to say where exactly. Doesn't match what I've got here for error AFA Don : Last one of those I fixed had a similar error code, bad chip on the 80-column card, unless I've had AFA Don : a few neurons go bad... (Probable) AFA Don : Betcha he has an 80-column card AFA Don : ...tried my first computer troubleshooting while driving at 65 mph, going down south... AFA Don : Daughter called me on the cell phone, she needed to print a resume on the 2GS, and it wouldn't work... AFA Don : Kinda different trying to diagnose clues while avoiding traffic. AFA Don : Problem was the dipswitch I have to change to swap the DeskJet from the 2GS to the Mac and back... AFA Fixit : Can't remember doing that. Never had a cell phone. AFA Don : Still don't understand why I have to change the baud rate when I'm using the parallel port to print but it won't work unless I do... AFA Fixit : How's the DeskJet on printing envelopes? AFA Don : Good and bad. Good on the To: part, but the return address won't print close enough to the upper left AFA Don : corner. AFA Don : ...so, I glue an address sticker on the envelopes. AFA Don : Problem is, you can't print closer to the edge, any edge, than 1/4 inch AFA Don : That makes the return address look weird. AFA Don : ...small problem AFA Don : I see MacWarehouse has HP 560C's for $299 AFA Fixit : Looking at a DeskWriter for my bro-in-law for $197. AFA Don : I'm thinking about a PowerPrint to speed up my DJ, but it almost would make sense for me to buy a new AFA Don : printer... At those prices! AFA Fixit : That's 550C AFA Don : Maybe so, I numbed out when I saw the price... AFA Don : I think I paid $490 for my DJ 500 AFA Fixit : Have the catalog in front of me. AFA Don : Still a good deal. AFA Fixit : Same price as a 520 AFA Don : yup AFA Fixit : Would consider sending him after it, but he's got a tight budget and the $197 for BW makes it work. AFA Don : ...bought a used fax from a friend, now I don't have to leave my PowerBook on Wake on Ring... AFA Don : yeah, color is just a novelty, I think. I would like to have more speed though. AFA Fixit : Found out that Apple's dropped the 280 from the price book. AFA Fixit : 3 pages a minute in BW AFA Fixit : At least that's what the ads say. AFA Don : They're supposed to stop playing musical revs as policy. Longer product life should make friends. AFA Don : Using the 150 tonight? AFA Fixit : No, on the IIx. The 150 is only for road trips. AFA Don : That's for sure. Hard to believe they couldn't have seen that people expect to have a new AFA Don : computer stay new for more than a week... AFA Fixit : A lot of people whining on how the 150 isn't a real replacement for the 165 and now they seem to be AFA Fixit : dropping all the active-matrix grayscale powerbooks. AFA Fixit : Of course, those are the one I always recommend. AFA Don : You've just gotta decide whether or not it does what you want. Same deal on my 170, but I'm happy AFA Don : with it... AFA Don : 150 have an active matrix screen? AFA Fixit : Can't find a 165 to save my life and it's just what my brother in law needs. Looks like the 280 will AFA Don : I fooled around with the Duos for a while, but it seemed like a toy. AFA Fixit : soon be in the same situation and that's what I think will be the best solution for my father in law. AFA Don : Almost got one instead of the 170, sure glad I didn't. AFA Fixit : Seems that Apple has decided to simplify the active matrix offerings to color. From what I've been .. AFA Don : I haven't seen an AM color PB, but the PM screens are too dim in color for my money... AFA Fixit : reading lately, it may be a supply problem. A lot of other notebook manufacturers are doing the same AFA Fixit : as Apple. Makes me think that active matrix screen manufacturers may be moving production to color. AFA Don : I've always had a couple of bad pixels on my screen, must be more of a problem with color. AFA Fixit : Never seen a 280c, 540c or 180c display? AFA Don : Never have... I stay outa stores, they make my wallet throb... AFA Fixit : Personally, I still think the Backlit Portable display is the best I've ever seen. AFA Don : ...want everything I see AFA Don : I'll have to take a look AFA Fixit : Know the feeling. AFA Don : Word is, the backlights fail after 15 months. That's a little worrisome. Maybe more for color since AFA Don : you really need the backlight for those AFA Fixit : I suffer from the same problem. Luckily I'm a cheap bastard that has to wait forever for that really.. AFA Fixit : great deal before I buy. AFA Don : By the time I decide, it's the end of the product life cycle... AFA Fixit : Used to mean you could get a really great deal on the discontinued model. Now they way that Apple is AFA Fixit : discontinuing models, the price jumps on the old model. AFA Fixit : We'll be buying PowerMacs when Apple introduces VLW computers. AFA Don : Right! I'd like to have a PM, but have to convince myself I need one first. Can do everything I AFA Don : REALLY need to do on the 170 AFA Fixit : Even harder to justify it here with a 50mhz 030 NuBus mac. AFA Don : Right! AFA Fixit : Only thing that concerns me is that the window for resale is closing. AFA Don : Well, whatdya say we call it a night... The crowd'll understand... AFA Don : The window is a keyhole, actually... AFA Fixit : Sounds good to me. See you next week. AFA Fixit : The only things that save me are the extra RAM, DayStar and 160mb internal. AFA Don : CU... Check out the Connectix blurb in MacWeek if you're still on the fence about RamDoubler... AFA Fixit : Night AFA Don : ...yeah, wish I had more than 40 Mbytes on my PowerBook AFA Don : G'Nite... AFA Fixit : Well. See you around. Night. AFA Don : Catchya later if not before... AFA Don : 'Nite... 10/17/94 7:58:05 PM Closing Log file.
