8/15/94 6:25:51 PM Opening ÒChat Log 8/15/94Ó for recording. AFC Marvin : Hello Don, I can hear the echo in here. AFC Marvin : Am I the only one to show up so far? AFL Don : Hello! AFL Don : Do you see the same hall name as I do? AFL Don : I've been in here since 6:30, since it's the only place I can get to... AFL Don : I've been IM'ing the usuals, nobody else is online... AFL Don : Maybe they ran out of halls AFC Marvin : Oh! it does say Apple II Development. AFL Don : Clicking on AHW conference hall points right to here, every time... AFC Marvin : I would think the others would default into this hall too. Maybe they were changing some names and AFC Marvin : it is a name mistake but really our normal hall. AFL Don : yeah, probably.. AFC Marvin : Probably the others will drop in here too and not notice the hall name. AFL Don : ..could be. AFC Marvin : Hi Walt. You are the third one to drop in so far tonight. Just Don and myself so far. AFA Fixit : Just as long as everyone else does. AFL Don : I guess anybody'll be sent here... AFA Fixit : So when does the third shoe drop? AFC Marvin : I think this is our hall but has the wrong name hung on the door. AFL Don : I think it has dropped already... AFC Marvin : Or maybe we have been merged in with ADV. AFL Don : That's a possibility, since that was GaryJ's bailiwick before the night of the long knives... AFC Marvin : Walt, for a while Don and I were beginning to wonder if somehow we were the only ones that AFC Marvin : could get in here. So glad to see you could get in too. AFL Don : You must have a long commute from work, Walt... AFA Fixit : It's about an hour or so each way. AFL Don : Ouch. I used to do that... AFC Marvin : Hello Cuddly! AFL Don : Betcha that's Kate! Hi Kate! AFL Don : ...nice cool breeze here now, 62 outside, hope that means our heatwave is kaput... Cuddly1 : You bet right Don :) AFL Don : :) AFC Marvin : Did it finally get hot up your way Don? We set a record for this date today at 96 I think it was. AFL Don : I can recognize you by your typing! Cuddly1 : Hiya Marvin :) AFL Don : Yesterday was 92, same high today... Cuddly1 : Don't mean to be delayed with the hellos alll... just on the phone chewing out MCI :/ AFC Marvin : Hi Kate, you fooled me again. You have quite a collection of screen names. AFA Fixit : Jeeze, we're actually getting some rather cool weather right now. Cuddly1 : hehehehehe Marvin :) I just like to keep people on their toes ;AFC Marvin : Hello Frank. AFL Don : Hello, Frank! BCS Frank : Marvin, Don, y'all, Hi! :) AFL Don : I see that you found us in the Apple II Development Hall! AFC Marvin : Frank, are you also showing APPLE II DEVELOPMENT as the hall name? AFL Don : Maybe it's been ADV for months, and we just didn't notice it... BCS Frank : Yup, and I'm getting a lot of Host ain't responding dialogs tonight as well. AFC Marvin : Don are you on with your PB? I am using the PB. I wonder if the hall title is platform specific? Cuddly1 : Don... As I recall last week or the week before it did say Hardware. I could be wrong tho. Cuddly1 : Walt just crashed. :/ He'll be right back BCS Frank : I'm on with an SE. AFC Marvin : I think it said HARDWARE too last week. AFL Don : Hmmm. Yes, I'm on the PowerBook. But ADV is an Apple-2 area, also, so that'd be weird.. BCS Frank : I think the system has the shimmies tonight. AFA Fixit : Bump goes the system... AFC Marvin : Water temperature in the swimming pool hit 87.5 degrees yesterday. That breaks the previous BCS Frank : ReHi, Walt :) AFC Marvin : record by .5 degree. AFL Don : ....I've been getting a lot of "AO Cannot Support 9600 Baud At This Time" messages... AFL Don : Wow, a little warmer and you can do sensory-deprivation experiments! BCS Frank : Sounds like a whole lot of people are online at once. AFL Don : Must be, a ROOMS check goes on and on... AFC Marvin : If the water temp goes up much more I will have to look for a way to cool it. AFL Don : It's rush hour on the information highway! Cuddly1 : LOL Don... never thought of it that way before :) BCS Frank : information parking lot... :) AFL Don : One of my ham buddies says that he called Global Village, found out they're gonna have a new version AFL Don : of their FAX software soon that'll do gray scale better.. BCS Frank : That'll be Mac based? AFL Don : I'm sure... AFC Marvin : We gotta watch for that new version. AFA Fixit : Too bad you can't ask how many people are online. AFC Marvin : Though with the PB170 we have no gray scale so we could not see it anyway. BCS Frank : What do you want? A strain gauge on AOL? AFL Don : Yeah, but when we print out faxes they might look better... AFL Don : I think the number of people online is a proprietary secret... AFL Don : Used to be, we could guess by the chat slowdowns, but things stay nimble now... BCS Frank : I was getting serious slowdowns looking in A2 message areas. BCS Frank : Does that mean too many A2 users online? AFL Don : Maybe they have some way to give priority to chatstuff... AFC Marvin : LOL Frank! AFL Don : I see that you've been really busy, posting in the A2 areas, Frank! AFL Don : ...your usual good stuff... BCS Frank : Well, there've been more open spaces.... AFL Don : ...yes, it's easier to get a word in edgewise now.. BCS Frank : Some day I'll download it all and make a really unreadable coffee table book with it. BCS Frank : "AOL Logs - - The Early Years." AFL Don : Right! Might make the New York Times Best Seller List, if you publish! BCS Frank : I esp. liked the Windows user who posted a request for help getting AOL software for his new GS. AFL Don : That's a keeper! BCS Frank : Had to send him a sad letter. BCS Frank : One of the advantages of living to about 300 (an ambition of mine) is to see what BCS Frank : archeologists will make of these files. AFL Don : Right! Probably deduce that this stuff has to do with some kind of religious rite... BCS Frank : They may have to reconstruct the 20th Century based on "dawn-files" from AOL and Prodigy. AFL Don : Ah yes, The Dead C Scrolls... BCS Frank : Scholars arguing over terms like "LOL" and ":)" Cuddly1 : On the coffee table beside the "Motel Of the Mysteries" is "AOL of the Mysteries" AFL Don : :) BCS Frank : Trying to match together screen names... who was "Tim," and is he really "Draco?" AFL Don : That was Kent! BCS Frank : So Kent tells me.... BCS Frank : They were both at Sue Nails breakfast at MW.... BCS Frank : Wish we could have simulcast that breakfast. :) AFL Don : That's right, Kent said in a post on the local UG BBS that he was on a plane going to MW... AFA Fixit : Sorry I missed Kent. AFL Don : Thought you were here when Kent was extant, Walt... AFA Fixit : Haven't seen him in too long. BCS Frank : He was there for awhile, but seems to have been very tightly scheduled. AFL Don : OIC, had a cognitive slip for a minute... BCS Frank : He's with eWorld right now, and they're very busy taking off. AFL Don : That's what he told me when he called me on the phone the other day... Cuddly1 : Got an eWorld package at MW... don't like it all that much :/ AFL Don : He keeps calling my data line, getting my fax modem! Cuddly1 : Too expensive :/ BCS Frank : You oughta FAX him back! :) AFA Fixit : Don, I may be a "young whipper snapper" but I've been here since Samuel. AFL Don : I agree, Kate... I don't want to spend money to sample something... AFL Don : Right, Walt! BCS Frank : Doesn't the MW eWorld pack have a few free hours? AFL Don : I think just the usual monthly time, and you pay up front the way I read it... AFA Fixit : As far as the system is concerned, I'm ancient. AFL Don : ...I didn't' know MW had an eWorld pack, so I haven't seen it... BCS Frank : That's venerable, Walt. :) BCS Frank : MW, the show, they were handing them out in the Apple Tent. Cuddly1 : Frank, we got 120 free minutes and not much else free as far as I could tell. AFA Fixit : Been over 6 years now.... ;) Cuddly1 : Gee you're only 2 years older then me online dear ;) BCS Frank : That's a long time, Walt, in computer years.... AFA Fixit : If I hang on long enough, I could have the oldest OH account on the system. ;> AFL Don : The oldest Apple-2 account? BCS Frank : Well, if it's not an Apple II account it's not even in the running. AFA Fixit : True, true. BCS Frank : Frank Dooling will be hard to top though. BCS Frank : I think he signed on with a Babbage Analytical Engine, and a steam modem. AFA Fixit : I think I should be able to out live Frank. ;) BCS Frank : ... it ran at about 15 psi. Cuddly1 : hehehehehehe Frank ;) AFL Don : LOL! BCS Frank : Maybe, Walt, but remember, he's got a head start. :) AFC Marvin : :) BCS Frank : Walt, are you gonna be running a Mac? AFA Fixit : Yep. It's worked better for accessing AO for some time. BCS Frank : Right..... that's why I've been using this here SE. AFL Don : ...that's a fact. BCS Frank : So far, with a very limited sampling, I haven't come across anyone BCS Frank : who's planning on weathering the A2 termination by moving to IBM. AFL Don : That'd be a tough way to go... AFL Don : ...although with Chicago, maybe the "IBM"s'll seem just like Macs... BCS Frank : Because of the learning curve for Windows? AFC Marvin : I can go either way but prefer to use my Mac as opposed to my Win AFC Marvin : WinBook. AFL Don : ...some of my ham buddies are into Windows, and I can't believe all the troubles they have getting AFL Don : things to work right... Things we take for granted on our side of the street... AFA Fixit : Every time I try to use Window, I end up quitting to DOS. BCS Frank : but, but, Windows was supposed to get you -away- from DOS! AFC Marvin : I keep a DOS disk plugged into my WinBook so that it boots direct to DOS rather than going to Windows. AFA Fixit : The only other platform I use regularly is a SPARCstation and I don't see America Online supporting... AFA Fixit : Solaris in the near future. AFL Don : I think IBM-type designers believe in the "Medicine Has To Taste Bad To Work Good" school of thought... AFC Marvin : If I need Windows I take the disk out to boot. AFA Fixit : Windows is just DOS with a pretty face. BCS Frank : No pain, no gain? AFA Fixit : I don't see any gain. If I ever start using Windows, it will by necessity, be kicking and screaming... AFL Don : Likewise... BCS Frank : What about the PowerPC Macs... is there much advantage there? AFL Don : Someday I may be hungry enough to eat liver, someday I may want to compute enough to jump ship AFL Don : to the "IBM" side, won't say I won't, but I sure won't volunteer... AFL Don : I think the PowerMacs may be on the verge of making a big jump in performance. AFL Don : MacWeek has some info on 120 MHz machines on the horizon... BCS Frank : So the PoweMacs may just bypass the whole Windows adventure? AFA Fixit : Not at the moment, but as Native software comes out, they'll be ahead and Intel platforms will never.. AFA Fixit : catch up. AFL Don : I think that's the Apple Hope... BCS Frank : That would be a bad week for Intel and MicroSoft. AFA Fixit : Intel cannot increase the performance of the Pentium chip at the rate that IBM and Motorola can push.. AFA Fixit : the PowerPC. AFL Don : Yeah, Gates might have to start eating Hamburger-Helper-Helper BCS Frank : Hasn't slowed down the rate of Intel PR releases. :) AFA Fixit : MicroSoft won't care, they'll just port Windows to the PowerPC. AFA Fixit : It's increased the rate of Intel PR releases and deceptive ones at that. BCS Frank : ... a GS/OS start up splash screen? :) AFL Don : Yeah, right! AFA Fixit : One the best stories I've read recently says that the Flying Pentium ad was don't on a Quadra. BCS Frank : Yup, it was. AFL Don : Way I heard it, they tried it on a blue machine, and could AFL Don : not do it... BCS Frank : The agency went outside for a fast order graphics boutique... BCS Frank : They didn't have the time to trash all their equipment and start over on Intel. AFL Don : Too bad Apple can't ethically use that in an ad campaign... BCS Frank : Gee, Don, why can't they? BCS Frank : Truth in advertising is, I'll admit, a novel idea.... BCS Frank : But what the heck, who'll notice? AFL Don : I 's'pose they could, except that the ad agency might want to get future Intel bux... BCS Frank : Ohhhh, it'd be Apple's agency that'd run that ad. BCS Frank : "Like the graphics in that last Intel ad? You should...." AFL Don : ...well, it's getting late. I've been up since 4:30, had to take daughter to the airport for an AFL Don : early flight, getting numb... (number) BCS Frank : Yup, rather into the evening here too, bye all :) BCS Frank : See you on Halloween! AFL Don : :) AFA Fixit : I should get to bed myself. Have class to teach in the morning. AFL Don : Ah yes, I remember, "I dreamed I was teaching my class, woke up and by golly I was!" AFL Don : Nite Marvin, Walt. CU Later... AFA Fixit : Haven't fallen asleep in class yet. AFL Don : Say hello to Herta for us... AFA Fixit : Night guys. AFC Marvin : Good night all. 73 Don. AFL Don : That's one advantage to being the teacher, Walt, easier to stay awake... AFL Don : 73... 8/15/94 8:33:58 PM Closing Log file.
