8/1/94 6:26:51 PM Opening ÒChat Log 8/1/94Ó for recording. AFL Don : hello, Joel... Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat... AFL Don : First time with us? JoelH4 : Thanks...sounds like we won't be here much longer...(charter AppleLink member) JoelH4 : where will we all go???? AFL Don : You might consider going to Mac. You'll be amazed at the features AO has that haven't been open to the Apple 2... JoelH4 : $$$$ working on that, but that takes time... JoelH4 : Is someone SAVING the library? JoelH4 : someone should try to save all that software/files... 2 many users to let it JoelH4 : all go.............. AFL Don : Gee, I doubt it, Joel... AFC Marvin : Joel, I also log on with my Mac Powerbook and it has become apparent for some time that the Mac AOL software is a lot better than what we have had for the A2 computer. I also use a IIGS on AOL but not for much longer it would now appear. AFL Don : ...the Mac side is a whole 'nuther experience, partly because of the nifty software but also because of the features of the Mac that exceed the capabilities of the 2GS... JoelH4 : I've Mac access @ work if they get the tci/ip protocol to work... no prob. AFL Don : What would we do with it, though. No place to display it... JoelH4 : not true... comp.sys.apple2 on internet would go BONKERS w/ that stuff... AFL Don : Maybe it'll still be accessible from the remaining platforms... The textfile stuff doesn't care.. JoelH4 : the U.mich.archives or someplace like that would prob. be glad to have it AFL Don : Problem is, it would have to be released by AO, not sure of the proprietary handle on it... JoelH4 : another place is grind.isca.uiowa.edu loves apple2 software... JoelH4 : if tcp/ip opens up I know there's easy places to put it... :) AFC Marvin : That would be nice if the A2 software were left online so it could be downloaded via internet. But JoelH4 : not w/ tcp/ip... how fast is your machine? AFC Marvin : I bet the disk space will be cleared for other purposes. AFL Don : Maybe we could dl it, put the disks in a time capsule, bury it in Silicon Valley some place... JoelH4 : I've contacts that would be interested... who can I contact @ aol? AFL Don : I can see AO's point on this... They're making improvements so fast on the other platforms that it's getting to be a problem making sure that the changes are compatible with the A2 software... AFC Marvin : We need some place with a tcp/ip that can run the high speed for downloading all the files. I bet it can be done and like you say Joel there are places that will be glad to have it. AFL Don : Not sure about who to contact... Maybe Steve Case'll hold another one of his fireside chats before it's too late. It'd have to be a high-level decision, I think... AFL Don : ...certainly not my call. JoelH4 : can you all keep me posted on what you see/hear?... I only get here 1-2 JoelH4 : times a week, but get internet mail "instantly" at joel-huebner@uiowa.edu AFL Don : You might E-mail AFL GaryJ, make your suggestion to him... That'd be a start... JoelH4 : afl GaryJ you say? what about Steve case, what's his login? AFL Don : I think Steve Case as a screen-name'll get to the top... JoelH4 : that's my fav. place to get to ... AFL Don : ...The chatlog archives would be fairly easy to keep, I think. JoelH4 : I'll check w/ my connections & let you know...better go now... AFL Don : Hey, thanks for dropping by... If I hear of any possibilities about archiving this area, I'll get JoelH4 : this has been a very good dialogue, thanks & do keep me posted, THANKS ! AFL Don : (let) you know... AFL Don : Hope to see you again! AFC Marvin : Good night Joel! JoelH4 : bye !, do send me mail @ my internet address, joel-huebner@uiowa.edu :) AFL Don : Wilco! AFC Marvin : There really is a lot of A2 software lurking here on AOL that will probably be tossed out by the end AFC Marvin : of the year.AFC Marvin : Hello Gundoc! AFL Don : Hello, Gundo! GUNDOC45 : Hello AFL Don : What can we do for you? AFL Don : Any Apple-2 problems we can help you with? GUNDOC45 : Don, did I just talk to you about a 1/2 hour ago??? AFL Don : You stopped by, but by the time my reply made it onscreen, you were gone... GUNDOC45 : The only problem I have is " why is AOL canceling the APPLE II??? AFL Don : It's a problem with numbers, Doc... And the AFL Don : they're adding to the other platforms when they have to sidestep the A2 code... increasing difficulty of making the improvements AFL Don : A painful but necessary decision... AFL Don : They really bent over backwards carrying the A2 code as long as they have... AFC Marvin : Gundoc our numbers are shrinking. We are far outnumbered by other platforms. GUNDOC45 : I think things are just fine the way they are GUNDOC45 : I won't give up my GS, so where to go now????? AFL Don : That's gonna be a problem, I fear. I intend to continue using my 2GS for those tasks where it works best, but I use my Mac routinely more and more. AFC Marvin : Same here Don, but some tasks are so well suited to my IIGS I am finding it hard to change them to the Mac. And that is part of the reason I have not been rushing to upgrade to a Power Mac. AFL Don : If you haven't seen AO from the Mac side, you'll be amazed at what the additional capabilities do.. AFL Don : Likewise... I don't think I'll find any spreadsheet software that can beat AppleWorks... GUNDOC45 : I use PC'S all day at work and I've yet to find one I like better than my GS AFC Marvin : Have you had a chance to try a Mac on AOL? GUNDOC45 : No AFL Don : I hear you, Doc... PC's are on the Dark Side, for my money. Macs, on the other hand, are really 2GSs with an attitude. AFC Marvin : It is nice. It makes the AOL A2 software seem rather outdated now. AFL Don : You can only see about 10% (my guess) of what AO is like when using the 2GS, compared to the Mac. GUNDOC45 : So what your saying is they want the A2 space for something else??? AFC Marvin : For instance, I am still at work using my PowerBook 170 and am logged on at 9600 baud. AFL Don : It's nothing short of amazing now, getting better all the time. You just don't see these changes from AFL Don : the 2GS.. AFL Don : I'm sitting in my living room with my PowerBook 170 on my lap, at 9600 baud. Can't do that with a 2GS unfortunately... AFC Marvin : One of my coworkers logged on AOL with the new Mac software at 14,400 baud. I have not tried that yet but will soon see if I can do it too. GUNDOC45 : But in 5 years when 9600 is obsolete will you trash your 170???? AFL Don : I tried, but none of the nodes up here will support 14,400... AFC Marvin : I suspect that in five years my 170 will be worn out but you have a good point. I am still using my AFC Marvin : IIGS at home a lot. GUNDOC45 : You and many others! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AFL Don : One thing about computers, they continue to do what they used to do, even when others say they're AFL Don : obsolete... GUNDOC45 : Good point AFL Don : ...One point, there'll still be 2GS users on AO to give support to other 2GS users, you just won't be AFL Don : able to use a 2GS to access AO to contact them. AFL Don : But, if you have problems, need help, we'll be here... AFC Marvin : On Prodigy a IIGS never worked as far as I know. AFL Don : That's true... AFC Marvin : I guess we have to be glad that AOL supported the A2 for so long.
