6/27/94 21:51:19 Opening "Chat AHW 6/27/94" for recording. AFA Fixit : Hi Pacalito! Welcome to the Apple II Hardware Forum Chat! Pacalito : What is going on here? AFA Fixit : Not much at the moment. Pacalito : I have a Mac and I don't know to much about it Pacalito : I have been reading book like crazy AFA Fixit : What kind of Mac do you have? Pacalito : Centris 650 AFA Fixit : That's a good unit. Pretty fast, upgradable and expandable. Pacalito : That is what people say? AFA Fixit : I'm using an old Apple Portable right now. Pacalito : I love portable computer they look nice AFA Fixit : Most certainly. AFA Fixit : This one is very old. Weighs about 18 pounds. AFA Fixit : Looks like we lost Pacalito... WaltRoshon : Looks like it WaltRoshon : Not much action tonight... Is Don away tonight? AFA Fixit : Don's up in Vancouver or on the way. WaltRoshon : Ah I didn't realize it was this week. AFA Fixit : Things usually pick up after 10. The second shift always seems to wonder in about then. AFA Fixit : That's why they always seem to run past 11:00 WaltRoshon : Makes sense. AFA Fixit : This week. He broke a spring on the trailer or he'd be there for sure. WaltRoshon : Ah WaltRoshon : Makes sense now... The left coast gets into the swing of things :) AFA Fixit : Funny thing is that about half of the second shift is on the East Coast. WaltRoshon : Got bumped :( AFA Fixit : Figured as much. AFA Fixit : Hi Danny, welcome to the Apple II Hardware Chat! Danny M812 : So what is the hot topic tonight? Danny M812 : Between the 3 of us we should solve all problems tonight AFA Fixit : I believe it's Ask Herr Fixit Night! AFA Fixit : In other words, the official open forum night. ;) WaltRoshon : Fixit is the answer man of the family when it comes to computer questions that is ;) Danny M812 : I need more HD space what is a good option? AFA Fixit : What computer are you using? Danny M812 : Should I buy Apple or someone else? Danny M812 : I have Performa 460 AFA Fixit : I never buy Apple peripherals. Danny M812 : What's good? Removable or fixed? AFA Fixit : APS has the best drives for the money these days. Danny M812 : Are they hard to hook up? Do I need special software? AFA Fixit : I prefer fixed drives myself. A removable can be a good choice for a second drive. Not so go for AFA Fixit : primary storage. AFA Fixit : Nothing difficult about hooking a drive up. Software comes with the drive. Danny M812 : Should I replace HD in my 460 or do an add on? AFA Fixit : Why throw out a perfectly good drive. Add an external. AFA Fixit : How big is the internal? Danny M812 : 80 Danny M812 : 30 left AFA Fixit : Then you still have some breathing room, but it's amazing how fast 80 Megabytes fills up. I recommend Khokan : hi WaltRoshon : Hi there Khokan :) AFA Fixit : that you look at least a 230 MB external. AFA Fixit : Hi Khokan! Welcome to the Apple II Hardware chat! Khokan : any experience w/ PB 520C Danny M812 : I'll check out APS-I'll try Mac Zone AFA Fixit : APS is a direct marketer. You'll find their ads in any Macintosh magazine. Danny M812 : Thanks for help! I'll let you know how I do. AFA Fixit : I'm afraid not. Too poor. Still using an old Apple Portable for computing on the road. AFA Fixit : You do that! Glad to be of help! :) AFA Fixit : Having problems with the 520? Khokan : No I am thinking of buying one AFA Fixit : Looks like a great machine if you have the $$$$ to spend. Khokan : anyone know mail order place AFA Fixit : Not off the top of my head. On the road, so I don't have any magazines to poke through. Apple is just AFA Fixit : starting to get into mail order. Haven't seen any authorized ads for CPUs yet. Only peripherals so far AFA Fixit : Have seen a couple of authorized VARs advertising CPUs. AFA Fixit : Last time I shopped the gray marketeers, I found I could meet or beat their prices at the local dealer AFA Fixit : If you're in a major metropolitan area you should be able to find a good deal locally. Khokan : called a few LA area MO places.Like used car dealers.real sleaze AFA Fixit : When you consider how they get their product, I'm not surprised. There are a few decent gray market AFA Fixit : mail order houses, but they still aren't authorized dealers and have to get their systems through... AFA Fixit : nefarious means. WaltRoshon : nefarious??? AFA Fixit : less than legitimate. WaltRoshon : Ah thanx :) Khokan : I'll like your suggestion .COMPU USAhas a few AFA Fixit : Until Apple authorizes mail order sales of CPUs, all mail order CPU sales are under the table. AFA Fixit : Where are you located Khokan? Khokan : SE Mass, near Providence RI AFA Fixit : About the only mail order places I can think of that would be worth checking out are... Khokan : MACMALL is authorized AFA Fixit : Mac & More and Mac Friends for semi-legit gray market. I believe MIET (MIET?) sells via mail order AFA Fixit : as a VAR. Authorized for CPU sales? AFA Fixit : I know a lot of they major mail order outfits have been authorized to sell peripherals. Khokan : I'll give them a try AFA Fixit : Remember that it's very important to get a good warranty from the mail order house. Especially if AFA Fixit : they are gray market since Apple may not honor their warranty. Make sure that they don't remove the AFA Fixit : serial numbers. Khokan : thanks for the info .good night WaltRoshon : Hi there Simplexity :) AFA Fixit : I'd also be sure to check with the Direct Marketing Association. Simplexity : Hi. AFA Fixit : No problem good luck AFA Fixit : Hi Simplexity! Welcome to the Apple II Hardware Chat. Khokan : thanks bye Simplexity : Hi, Fixit! Just stopped by to see what's happening. AFA Fixit : Not a heck of a lot. Just helping people with whatever hardware problems they have. Simplexity : Hmm. Yeah, it looks a bit slow. Walt, you helping' or just hanging out too? WaltRoshon : I'm just hanging out keeping Fixit company :) AFA Fixit : It's been a fairly slow night. Simplexity : A truly noble cause! :) WaltRoshon : Guess I should get used to people calling me Walt when I use this name huh Fixit?? ;D AFA Fixit : I guess so. ;) Simplexity : If it walks like a Walt, and talks like a Walt.... Especially if nobody knows.. Simplexity : ...you're not a a Walt....... Simplexity : All I know is the displayed handle...Who are you REALLY? :) WaltRoshon : And also if nobody knows that not only am I not a Walt but I'm not a he either?? ;) WaltRoshon : I'm Kate... Fixit's wife :) AFA Fixit : She's using my other account tonight. Simplexity : I had this suspicion that my astigmatism was acting up again... Simplexity : ...You DON'T walk like a Walt, after all! :) WaltRoshon : LOL!! I think I'll take that as a compliment!! (No offense intended dear ;D) Simplexity : Well, I certainly can't walk like a Sue... Not very well, anyway! :D WaltRoshon : ;) AFA Fixit : It's been pretty slow. :( Simplexity : No more comments than Quickie C or Quickie 3.2 have gotten, I wonder what happened to everybody. AFA Fixit : As tightfisted as Apple II users tend to be, I'm not surprised. Simplexity : Weird, isn't it. If I sold a program for Windows that was half as good as... Simplexity : what I produce for the IIgs, I could charge 3 times as much for it! (sigh) AFA Fixit : I guess that's why so many people write half baked programs for Windows. Simplexity : I think so. I'm just surprised that so many of them sell. Simplexity : (or is that "smell"?) ;) WaltRoshon : I hate to say it but I don't think some PC people know the difference or know better :/ AFA Fixit : I guess that's because there are so many half-witted Windoze users. WaltRoshon : LOL Fixit... GMTA! :) AFA Fixit : Most of them think it's "Just like a Mac" Simplexity : I have this theory. Somebody walks into a store and knows nothing. A salesman has a lot of messydos machines, and few Macs, so he tries to unload the m/d... KitesRcool : any one know much about downloading? AFA Fixit : Hi KitesRcool! Welcome to the Apple II Hardware chat. KitesRcool : help me AFA Fixit : I've downloaded a few things in my day. Simplexity : The customer now knows only messydos, and thinking he's getting a deal, buys. KitesRcool : ok, I try and it says invalid parameter or address pointer any ideas? Simplexity : Voila. Another poor soul duped into the sixth circle of computing hell. KitesRcool : hmmmmmmmm AFA Fixit : What computer are you using and what are you trying to download? Simplexity : Hmm yourself. I've never run into that message before. KitesRcool : it is an Apple 2GS from an IBM PLEASE don't say it won't work unless that is the truth AFA Fixit : The problem is that it's from an IBM. The older versions of the IBM software created files that AFA Fixit : can't be downloaded by a GS. AFA Fixit : Ugly but true. Simplexity : You have an IBM machine, trying to D/L an Apple IIgs file? Or vice versa? KitesRcool : nothing I can do :( KitesRcool : I have the 2GS AFA Fixit : You can complain to the staff responsible for the file. Where is the file? Simplexity : Fixit's right. I have d/led IBM files, but not many. It don't always work. KitesRcool : in my mail AFA Fixit : There you have a big problem. How big is the file? Simplexity : Can you send it to me? I have one of the accursed machines, and may be able Simplexity : to re-send it to you with newer software. KitesRcool : good ? it would take 4 min on a 2400bd KitesRcool : could you send me the newer software? AFA Fixit : Whoever is using the IBM can download it. It should be available in the Free area online. KitesRcool : what is it called Simplexity : It only helps you if you can use an IBM-compat machine to logon, tho.... KitesRcool : ya, I know KitesRcool : I get what I want:) Simplexity : Just checking.... never can be too thorough, I guess. ;) AFA Fixit : You should be able to find it with WAOL. KitesRcool : and how does it work? AFA Fixit : Excuse me??? KitesRcool : you just transfer the file format? AFA Fixit : You can only use it with a IBM compatible. Simplexity : Gotta go tuck in the kids.... Later, all! :) KitesRcool : The program, yes I know, then the person with the IBM transfers it to ProDos? AFA Fixit : No, the person with the IBM transfers it to AOL and it is stored in a native format for the computers AFA Fixit : that are used for the host system. When you download it with a GS, it should be converted to AFA Fixit : Prodos. Only works correctly with text files KitesRcool : oh it is my girlfriend wouldn't want to do that :) KitesRcool : would it have to be open to the public? AFA Fixit : No, if it is enclosed with mail it is private. KitesRcool : ya, that is how she sent it to me AFA Fixit : What type of file is it? KitesRcool : will check KitesRcool : just a GIF I guess AFA Fixit : If she uses the current version of the IBM software you should be able to download it and open it with AFA Fixit : a program like SuperConvert. KitesRcool : ok thanks AFA Fixit : Well, it's after 11:30 here and I have to get up early tomorrow. Good luck with the file. WaltRoshon : I'm outta here too :) AFA Fixit : Good night WaltRoshon : (After Fixit leaves that is) 6/27/94 23:52:24 Closing Log file.
