             into the control panel and open the 
             "PowerBook" icon.

             "external". Close the control panel. Reboot.

             modems, I understand, and if you can contact
             an ordinary bulletin board you'd at least 
             know the Express was working...

             modem is in use when I just looked!

GHutch     : Bw, sounds like a warranty claim to me...

GHutch     : hmmm, had the same problem, asked the tech 
             in the shop to try the modem, stumped him 
             too!
BCS Frank  : Can the modem invoke a dial tone from the 
             tel.ssy 
Bwshaw     : I asked so many people
BCS Frank  : system? 
GHutch     : then called the Apple SOS line and got the 
             advice I repeated earlier and it worked for 
             me
GHutch     : now those directions were to allow you to 
             enable the printer....
Bwshaw     : did not for me
AFL Don    : ....First thing I'd try, boot up comm 
             software for data-modem use, see if you can 
             dial somebody...
AFL Don    : I use ClarisWorks to communicate with a BBS 
             I sysop remotely, it works fine.
GHutch     : try enabling the printer, dumping the 
             document sitting in the serial port and see 
             if it goes.
AFL Don    : You should be able to hear it dial, hear the 
             phone on the other end pick up the line.
AFL Don    : ...Just got a phone call from Apple, trying 
             to sell me AppleCare...
GHutch     : What a coincidence!

AFL Don    : I for sure don't need it...  My DJ 500 is 
             sharp enough for me...

             Harmonie... 
AFC Softy  : They added some other things internally to 
             the 560, but I don't recall what 
AFC Softy  : they were. 
AFC Softy  : Possibly more internal fonts.
AFL Don    : HP's Journal devoted an entire issue to the 
             improvements they've made in inkjet 
             printing...
AFL Don    : Showed pix of samples.  They've got one 
             doing 1200 dpi, really sharp.
AFL Don    : The article is really fun to read.  They 
             have all sorts of interesting terms to 
             describe the processes
AFC Softy  : Real expensive too... :)
AFL Don    : ...for example, they talk about what they've 
             done to keep the cartridges from drooling...
             ...and periodically the cartridge goes over 
             to one side to clear out the holes, where 
             there is a spittoon to catch the expelled debris...
AFA Fixit  : That's the toughest part. Making cartridges 
             that don't drool and don't clog.
AFC Softy  : hehehe... :)

AFL Don    : I've got a cart right now that's almost 
             empty, thank goodness.  It clogs frequently. 
             But I can fix it by wiping off the jet plane 
             with a wet swab.  First cart that's given me 
             problems.

             get my hands on a 550c while I can.
AFC Softy  : Oh... one thing tho...  will DeskJets work 
             with the Mac?  I'd like to be able
AFL Don    : There should be some dandy deals on a 550c 
             soon.  Office Depot is closing out 500s for 
             $245 now...
AFC Softy  : to use the printer on both systems 
             eventually.
TJPB       : Power PCs are coming out in power books?
AFL Don    : I use my DJ 500 on my PowerBook, and it 
             works great!  There's a freeware driver that 
             really does
AFA Fixit  : Yes, later this year.
AFC Softy  : TJ.... according to rumors they're due 
             later this year when the low power
AFC Softy  : version of the PPC chip become available.
AFC Softy  : (the PPC 603)
AFL Don    : the job...  It's a little slow, because of 
             the 19,200 baud serial port limit, but it's 
             not THAT slow...
AFL Don    : There's also a gadget called PowerPrint that 
             lets you use the parallel input on the 500, 
             for more speed.. 
AFA Fixit  : 19,200? The PowerBook serial port is capable 
             of over 57kbps.
AFL Don    : Yes, but the DJ 500 isn't..
             The DJ500 can only do 19,200... 
AFA Fixit  : Oops, forgot that the printer has a slow 
             serial port. 
TJPB       : I have the power book 140, 4/40 thinking of 
             upgrading to Duo 270....
AFC Softy  : The Powerbooks due next month are supposedly 
             using low power 68040's... and 
AFC Softy  : are all going to be PPC upgradable.
TJPB       : oops duo
TJPB       : what models?
AFC Softy  : Nobody knows what models... the ones who do 
             know are probably under 
AFC Softy  : Non-Disclosure Agreements.
AFL Don    : ...you can make book on that..
AFC Softy  : No doubt there will be a Duo model of some 
             sort.
TJPB       : I have a Quadra 650 at home. Making 
             multimedia presentations. Want to do this on 
             the road
TJPB       : not sure which PB to get...? 
AFL Don    : Try before you buy...
TJPB       : How?
AFL Don    : Demo models in stores... That's what I 
             did...
TJPB       : didn't know about that...
AFC Softy  : Make up your own sample presentation and ask 
             the dealer if you can run it through one. 
TJPB       : also need a LCD display.
AFL Don    : Go for an active display if available...  It 
             makes a BIG difference..

TJPB       : I fly 120,000 mile per year. My PB can't 
             make it coast to coast on one bat.
AFL Don    : What platform, RHINO?  If on an Apple-2, 
             there's a small routine that'll capture a 
             program to a

THE RHINO1 : Yea it is AppleSoft, but my Apple II is long 
             gone.
AFL Don    : It effectively prints it disk.  From there 
             you can transfer it easily...
AFC Softy  : Rhino.... you'll need to load the program 
             into an Apple II and then "LIST" it
AFL Don    : Do you have a listing?
AFC Softy  : to a disk.
AFA Fixit  : Then you have problem.
AFC Softy  : AppleSoft programs are saved to disk in 
             tokenized form.
THE RHINO1 : Does anybody out there have an Apple II or 
             GS?
TJPB       : what's my PB 140 4/40 worth?

AFL Don    : Send the disk to someone with an Apple 2, 
             who'll send the program listing to you on 
             Ao..
AFA Fixit  : You could upload the file and I can convert 
             it to text.
THE RHINO1 : The file is up on AOL.  (Used to be 
             AppleLink Personal)
AFA Fixit  : Just attach the file to Email.
AFL Don    : Check out CLASSIFIEDS, TJPB... There'll be 
             prices there...
