3/21/94 6:22:33 PM Opening ÒChat Log 3/21/94Ó for recording. AFL Don : Hi George.. GHutch : Hi Don! AFA Fixit : Hi Guys AFL Don : Hello, Walt! GHutch : Hi Walt! GHutch : have either of you tried the Jurassic.init? AFL Don : What's that, haven't heard about it... AFA Fixit : Not I GHutch : it's in the top picks list, I DLed it and put it in the system folder, but no action... AFL Don : Hi Bwshaw! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum chat.. AFL Don : What'd the description say about it? GHutch : trying to remember, I think it's supposed to be a background graphic for the desktop AFL Don : Oh, ok... I'm partial to an uncluttered blue field, myself... Bwshaw : hi I have a Duo 270c and an Express modem and it wont work with America Online AFL Don : It should. Did you select the Express Modem in the setup options? GHutch : oooo a 270c cool! Bwshaw : yes GHutch : <--230 here AFL Don : hi Kate! TallStuff : Hi there Don :) GHutch : Bw, have you been trying to use the printer/modem port for printing lately? Bwshaw : oh help me Bwshaw : yes AFL Don : What modem did you select, Bw, when you set up the AO software? GHutch : To "unblock" the serial port on the duo, go into the control panel and open the "PowerBook" icon. GHutch : Switch the modem from "internal" to "external". Close the control panel. Reboot. Bwshaw : I tried it GHutch : that's from the SOS Apple help line Bwshaw : I know I called GHutch : make sure that the modem is "on" AFL Don : ...The Express Modem is internal, not external... Bwshaw : yes BCS Frank : "On?" BCS Frank : Now he tells me... Bwshaw : yes AFL Don : Hi Frank! BCS Frank : ... no wonder I've had a hard time signing onto AOL. AFL Don : Bw, can you call other BBS's with the Express... BCS Frank : Don, y'all, Hi! :) GHutch : LOL frank! Bwshaw : what do you mean BBSs BCS Frank : GHutch : I think he means other bulletin boards AFL Don : A computer bulletin board, not America Online... GHutch : <--checking modem settings in control panel... Bwshaw : no I did not try BCS Frank : Be right back... have a call.... BCS Frank : Bak! :) AFL Don : There were problems with some of the Express modems, I understand, and if you can contact an ordinary bulletin board you'd at least know the Express was working... GHutch : cool, the modem control panel says that the modem is in use when I just looked! AFL Don : Has it ever worked? Bwshaw : no GHutch : Bw, sounds like a warranty claim to me... Bwshaw : but the fax worked Bwshaw : hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm AFL Don : Ok, if the fax works, that's encouraging... Bwshaw : yeah GHutch : hmmm, had the same problem, asked the tech in the shop to try the modem, stumped him too! BCS Frank : Can the modem invoke a dial tone from the tel.ssy Bwshaw : I asked so many people BCS Frank : system? GHutch : then called the Apple SOS line and got the advice I repeated earlier and it worked for me GHutch : now those directions were to allow you to enable the printer.... Bwshaw : did not for me AFL Don : ....First thing I'd try, boot up comm software for data-modem use, see if you can dial somebody... AFL Don : I use ClarisWorks to communicate with a BBS I sysop remotely, it works fine. GHutch : try enabling the printer, dumping the document sitting in the serial port and see if it goes. AFL Don : You should be able to hear it dial, hear the phone on the other end pick up the line. AFL Don : ...Just got a phone call from Apple, trying to sell me AppleCare... GHutch : What a coincidence! GHutch : Bw do you have a docking station? GHutch : oops he's gone BCS Frank : Off to try some BBSs no doubt. AFL Don : ...could be GHutch : well I'm off to room surf for awhile AFL Don : Funny, some nights we collect Mac users... AFL Don : Good to see ya again, George, and congratulations on the new laptop.. GHutch : they're everywhere...:) GHutch : Thanks Don, see ya soon AFL Don : :) AFA Fixit : And so many think the only Apple computer is a Mac. AFA Fixit : Have fun! AFL Don : How true... And one of these days the PowerPC users won't know about Macs... GHutch : later Walt AFA Fixit : They'll have to change the name from PowerMac BCS Frank : "Mac?" Wasn't that an early Apple brand of PowerComps?" AFL Don : Ho ho... BCS Frank : "Yeah, the ones where you had to finger in the commands somehow." BCS Frank : "Some guy named Hollerith invented the thing for the first market survey of the U.S." ... so ends today's history-spool. AFL Don : ...where would we be without punch cards... Come to think about it, I haven't seen one for years! BCS Frank : I've seen them at the Boston Computer Museum..... BCS Frank : ... and I use punch paper tape at work. AFL Don : ...don't miss 'em... BCS Frank : Well, they're eye readable (with practice) and AFA Fixit : I haven't used punch tape or cards since I was in the Air Force. Thank goodness! AFL Don : Still using tape for computer-controlled machinery, huh? BCS Frank : -completely- magnetic proof. BCS Frank : Right... CNC milling... cutting edge of the 50's. AFA Fixit : Haven't switched to phase-change optical, eh? BCS Frank : Meanwhile some of the Bridgeport milling machines BCS Frank : in the shop have been retrofitted with 386/486 controller set ups BCS Frank : for 2 axis control. BCS Frank : At least they use floppies. BCS Frank : Have you heard anything about the Quickie color scanner setup? BCS Frank : I was wondering if it's shipped yet. AFL Don : Not a thing... I think Steve was going to upload some new sample scans, but haven't heard if he did.. AFA Fixit : Now there's a medium that's magnetic field proof! BCS Frank : The cards & tape? Yes, but watch out for termites! BCS Frank : Have to run... we're hanging pictures here.... AFA Fixit : Termites, mold, mildew... BCS Frank : Will be back online a bit later. AFL Don : ...later BCS Frank : Don't forget thumbtacks too. :) AFA Fixit : Mylar tape is the most durable medium for data storage. AFL Don : ....Well, guess we can't compete with the Academy Awards, Walt. AFL Don : Hello, TJPB... Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat... AFL Don : ....or what's left of it tonight.. AFA Fixit : I don't know why everyone else can't do both. AFL Don : I am... TJPB : hello.... system is slow tonight AFL Don : Seems ok here... AFL Don : First time with us, TJ? TallStuff : Hello all :) AFL Don : Hello again, Kate... AFL Don : Hi Larry... AFC Softy : {{{{{{Becky}}}}}} :* :) AFC Softy : Hi Don... Walt :) TallStuff : {{{{{{Softy}}}}}}}} TallStuff : Larry... Walt says hello :) AFA Fixit : Hello Larry AFC Softy : Well.... no PowerBook yet. I got talked into waiting until the new models TallStuff : Ah :) AFC Softy : roll out next month. :) AFA Fixit : {{{{Kate}}}}}} TallStuff : See Larry... I told you Walt said hello ;) TallStuff : {{{{Walt}}}} AFC Softy : :) AFL Don : That'll give you another month before yours is obsolete! AFC Softy : Right.... :D AFC Softy : I know what I want.... I'm just waiting to the "closeout prices" :) AFL Don : The pushy woman from Apple that just called me to try to sell me AppleCare said "Well, how do you plan to take care of problems when your warranty runs out?" I answered...... "I plan to keep my fingers crossed...." AFC Softy : Although the 180 4/80 is down to $1978 now. AFA Fixit : That's right! Wait for the PowerPC 603 Powerbooks to drive down the price of a 180c to under $2,000 AFC Softy : Hmmmm... that's an idea. AFC Softy : I'm here... reading ATB. ;D AFL Don : Ahaaa... That explains it... AFC Softy : got my first look at the DeskJet 560c yesterday. AFL Don : What'd ya think/ AFL Don : ? AFC Softy : Looks just like the 550 to me... AFC Softy : ...except for the 600x300 resolution. ;) AFC Softy : This was at an Office Club. AFC Softy : I just wonder if the Harmonie HP drivers can work with the 560 tho? AFL Don : ...I wonder if you can really see 600 dpi on most papers... AFA Fixit : As long as you don't need color AFL Don : Isn't the 560 color capable? AFC Softy : I wonder if I'd really *need* 600x300. AFC Softy : Yep.... AFC Softy : The new 520 is the B&W model. AFL Don : I for sure don't need it... My DJ 500 is sharp enough for me... AFA Fixit : The 560 is color capable. It's just Harmonie... AFC Softy : They added some other things internally to the 560, but I don't recall what AFC Softy : they were. AFC Softy : Possibly more internal fonts. AFL Don : HP's Journal devoted an entire issue to the improvements they've made in inkjet printing... AFL Don : Showed pix of samples. They've got one doing 1200 dpi, really sharp. AFL Don : The article is really fun to read. They have all sorts of interesting terms to describe the processes AFC Softy : Real expensive too... :) AFL Don : ...for example, they talk about what they've done to keep the cartridges from drooling... ...and periodically the cartridge goes over to one side to clear out the holes, where there is a spittoon to catch the expelled debris... AFA Fixit : That's the toughest part. Making cartridges that don't drool and don't clog. AFC Softy : hehehe... :) AFC Softy : "spittoon" :) AFL Don : I've got a cart right now that's almost empty, thank goodness. It clogs frequently. But I can fix it by wiping off the jet plane with a wet swab. First cart that's given me problems. AFC Softy : Well... I reckon the thing I need to do is get my hands on a 550c while I can. AFC Softy : Oh... one thing tho... will DeskJets work with the Mac? I'd like to be able AFL Don : There should be some dandy deals on a 550c soon. Office Depot is closing out 500s for $245 now... AFC Softy : to use the printer on both systems eventually. TJPB : Power PCs are coming out in power books? AFL Don : I use my DJ 500 on my PowerBook, and it works great! There's a freeware driver that really does AFA Fixit : Yes, later this year. AFC Softy : TJ.... according to rumors they're due later this year when the low power AFC Softy : version of the PPC chip become available. AFC Softy : (the PPC 603) AFL Don : the job... It's a little slow, because of the 19,200 baud serial port limit, but it's not THAT slow... AFL Don : There's also a gadget called PowerPrint that lets you use the parallel input on the 500, for more speed.. AFA Fixit : 19,200? The PowerBook serial port is capable of over 57kbps. AFL Don : Yes, but the DJ 500 isn't.. The DJ500 can only do 19,200... AFA Fixit : Oops, forgot that the printer has a slow serial port. TJPB : I have the power book 140, 4/40 thinking of upgrading to Duo 270.... AFC Softy : The Powerbooks due next month are supposedly using low power 68040's... and AFC Softy : are all going to be PPC upgradable. TJPB : oops duo TJPB : what models? AFC Softy : Nobody knows what models... the ones who do know are probably under AFC Softy : Non-Disclosure Agreements. AFL Don : ...you can make book on that.. AFC Softy : No doubt there will be a Duo model of some sort. TJPB : I have a Quadra 650 at home. Making multimedia presentations. Want to do this on the road TJPB : not sure which PB to get...? AFL Don : Try before you buy... TJPB : How? AFL Don : Demo models in stores... That's what I did... TJPB : didn't know about that... AFC Softy : Make up your own sample presentation and ask the dealer if you can run it through one. TJPB : also need a LCD display. AFL Don : Go for an active display if available... It makes a BIG difference.. Jack 12345 : Hi there. Bet you thought it'd be another 2 years before you heard from me again ;) AFC Softy : That is *if* they'll let you... but if they're convinced that you'll be buying AFC Softy : something from them, I'm sure they'll be accommodating. AFL Don : ...just don't take no for an answer. TJPB : I know... was going to go with the 180c but mac world gave it 2 stars....gave the 270 4 stars.3 THE RHINO1 : howdy all AFC Softy : the BIG problem with the 180c is the battery life. AFL Don : Hello, RHINO! Welcome to what's left of the Apple Hardware Conference. THE RHINO1 : Can anybody help me with an AppleSoft problem? TJPB : don't want to buy to much though. I like to keep my on the road machine lean & mean. AFC Softy : the 270 has a newer battery type in it which lasts longer. AFL Don : Battery life isn't that big a deal... I run mine plugged in most of the time... AFL Don : go for RHINO, we'll try... Jack 12345 : we can try... let's hear it THE RHINO1 : Well....it goes like this...... AFL Don : Hi Puppy! TJPB : battery is important to me....always running out. THE RHINO1 : I have a program that I wrote a long time ago..... AFC Softy : Right Don... but not everyone has access to a wall plug all the time. :) THE RHINO1 : small basic thing, but now all I have is a Mac, can anyone convert the thing to text? AFL Don : ...well, there is a bigger battery pack that is sold... THE RHINO1 : I think it only had 20 or 30 lines of code.. TJPB : I fly 120,000 mile per year. My PB can't make it coast to coast on one bat. AFL Don : What platform, RHINO? If on an Apple-2, there's a small routine that'll capture a program to a AFL Don : textfile... THE RHINO1 : Yea it is AppleSoft, but my Apple II is long gone. AFL Don : It effectively prints it disk. From there you can transfer it easily... AFC Softy : Rhino.... you'll need to load the program into an Apple II and then "LIST" it AFL Don : Do you have a listing? AFC Softy : to a disk. AFA Fixit : Then you have problem. AFC Softy : AppleSoft programs are saved to disk in tokenized form. THE RHINO1 : Does anybody out there have an Apple II or GS? TJPB : what's my PB 140 4/40 worth? THE RHINO1 : What is tokenized? AFL Don : Send the disk to someone with an Apple 2, who'll send the program listing to you on Ao.. AFA Fixit : You could upload the file and I can convert it to text. THE RHINO1 : The file is up on AOL. (Used to be AppleLink Personal) AFA Fixit : Just attach the file to Email. AFL Don : Check out CLASSIFIEDS, TJPB... There'll be prices there... AFA Fixit : What's it called? THE RHINO1 : I've taken it to my Mac, I'll send it to you. THE RHINO1 : TRIG.CALC in the Apple II section. AFC Softy : "Tokenized" means.... the basic commands are in memory as a one byte character. AFL Don : You won't be able to run it on your Mac.... AFL Don : ? stores print, etc. when tokenized... AFC Softy : ie... "PRINT" is really $xx. THE RHINO1 : Yea, I know. I was just trying to get Word to read it so I could remember what I did. AFA Fixit : Should be able to massage it to work with a Mac Basic. AFC Softy : Rhino... which forum is it in?? AFC Softy : (the program) AFA Fixit : And what is the file name? Jack 12345 : Walt, he already gave you that, pay attention!!!! AFA Fixit : Sorry, multi-tasking. THE RHINO1 : It is in the Apple Soft Forum. I just found it by searching for Trig and TRIG.CALC is there THE RHINO1 : TRIG.CALC is the file named AFA Fixit : Can't find TRIG.CALC in the Apple II Libraries. THE RHINO1 : AFA Fixit, I just mailed it to you. Search for trig as a keyword. AFC Softy : hang on.... I'll brb. AFA Fixit : Sorry, checking wrong forum. AFC Softy : Okay... I got it. AFC Softy : It was in Apple II Education. THE RHINO1 : Great, BTW what kind of machine do you have? AFC Softy : Me?? A IIgs. :) AFC Softy : Ack!! I have to go! gonna be late for my bowling league :) Jack 12345 : Anybody have any idea what a fair price for an old Apple Rev C SCSI card would be? AFC Softy : Catchya next week :) AFL Don : Roll a strike for us, Larry! AFL Don : No idea.. AFL Don : Hello, Paul! Jack 12345 : Some guy wants to buy one and I'm not sure what to ask for it AFL Don : Check Classifieds here, might be others... AFL Don : Well, I've got work to do, so must sign off... Jack 12345 : Oh well, I might as well just give it to him... Expand the ][ market... THE RHINO1 : See ya Don AFL Don : Night all... See ya soon.. Jack 12345 : Bye Don AFL Don : :)
