3/7/94 6:24:39 PM Opening ÒChat Log 3/7/94Ó for recording. AFA Fixit : Hi Don AFL Don : Hi Walt... PollyCB : Hello AFL Don : Hello, Polly! AFL Don : Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat PollyCB : I have an Apple IIc and would like to get a hard drive for it. I saw an ad for a ProAPP from Alltech. Is this a good hard drive? AFL Don : I'm not familiar with it, but Alltech has a good reputation... PollyCB : I know there was once a Chinook hard drive but the last ad I saw for it showed a high price, but ProAPP was $259. AFL Don : There's no reason that a good drive can't be priced competitively these days... You'll like having a hard drive available... PollyCB : Besides Alltech and Quality Computers, is there anywhere else you'd suggest? AFL Don : Did you call TMS or Quality to see what they have available? PollyCB : Not yet AFL Don : They both have good deals, good support, might be wise to check with them, too... AFL Don : ...bought both of my hard drives from TMS, but have purchased lots of hardware from Quality... PollyCB : Should I ask if there is a warranty? AFL Don : Sure, pin down the warranty for sure! PollyCB : Thanks for the advice. Our user group is getting lots of hardware questions because people are being given computers or buying used computers. It's great to know you're here for help AFL Don : Remember, a warranty is only as good as the company that supports it. AFL Don : Right! That's what we're here for! PollyCB : Bye for now AFL Don : Actually, there aren't too many places to get info these days, compared to 10 years ago. AFL Don : Thanks for dropping by... ElliotA : hi you two.. what is up? AFL Don : Hello, Bob! LTNS! Ophtho Bob : Hello All! AFA Fixit : Hi Elliot and Bob. ElliotA : hi bob AFA Fixit : Hello Larry. AFL Don : Hello, Elliot! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat AFC Softy : Greetings.... :) AFL Don : Hiya, Larry! ElliotA : What is new for the lonely Apple //gs? AFL Don : Well, HyperCard GS is now available online for download! Ophtho Bob : I need some help with a HD problem. Is anyone up for it? ElliotA : :) AFC Softy : Walt... you remember helping me with getting a IIgs user signed on using a AFA Fixit : You'd be surprised, Elliot. AFL Don : go for it, Bob, we'll see what we can do... AFC Softy : SmartOne 2400?? AFA Fixit : Sure, Bo ElliotA : is it available at an ftp site... Fixit, surprise me AFA Fixit : oops, Bob Ophtho Bob : The Quickie just came out with their COLOR scanner!! AFA Fixit : I think so Larry. AFA Fixit : New CDROM drivers for the GS AFL Don : That's what I hear, Bob... ElliotA : flatbed or still hand held ElliotA : who has the CD-Rom drivers? Ophtho Bob : I have purchased a SCSI 80-Meg IBM drive used previously although very little on AFL Don : Handheld, you can use the old Quickie hardware... AFA Fixit : It may be available at ftp.apple.com Elliot. Haven't looked yet. AFC Softy : Well... they're still not quite making it online and I'm all out of ideas. :) ElliotA : ok, ? how do i create a gs cdrom Ophtho Bob : a Mac with no problems. I have a Apple HS SCSI card. and a IIGS with 4 megs AFL Don : Well, HyperCard GS is now available online for download! AFL Don : Hello, CPT! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat! AFC Softy : I already had them adjust the Modem Port settings to the funky ones AOL seems AFC Softy : to insist on. CPT FA : Hi.. AFA Fixit : I don't have one here anymore Larry. Kate never had any trouble using on her Mac. TallStuff : Hello all :) Ophtho Bob : I have tried to partition and initialize the disk into 3 partitions of 31,31 AFA Fixit : Usually, it's the Mac that has problems with a modem that works with the GS. AFC Softy : Walt... I think it's just a setup problem with the the cpu and/or the software. Ophtho Bob : and 19.5 with the Advanced Disk Utilities. Everything seemed to go well AFA Fixit : Works with other software, Larry? AFC Softy : Speaking of Kate.... {{{{{Stuffy}}}}}} :* AFL Don : Can you log on manually, Larry? TallStuff : {{{{{{{Softy}}}}}}}}}** AFL Don : How about logons on other BBSs? Ophtho Bob : except It recognizes duplicate partitions for each one of my partitions AFA Fixit : Still haven't seen drivers to author a CDROM on a GS. Ophtho Bob : totaling 12 AFC Softy : from what I can get out of her, they have used the modems on the IIgs for other AFC Softy : things. AFL Don : That sounds like the old P8 problem, Bob... Ophtho Bob : What is that Don. AFL Don : There was a problem, until the latest version of P8, where the operating system doubled what the SCSI card was doing in recognizing volumes. For a while, everyone had that problem until somebody came up with a patch... Then, with the latest version of the OS, the problem disappeared. Ophtho Bob : I get a message saying that there are two disks named XXXXX and I must either Ophtho Bob : eject the one in device .Apple SCSI.HD02.01 AFC Softy : Don... I don't know if they're calling up other BBSs... this is a school system Ophtho Bob : I am using 6.01 AFL Don : Check out the CVTech archives, I'm pretty sure there is a discussion of that problem. AFC Softy : My contact is one of the teachers who uses her Mac to access AOL during the day AFL Don : Hmmmm. You shouldn't be having the problem with the 6.0.1 package if it installed properly... Ophtho Bob : It seemed to install fine?? AFC Softy : She likes AOL so much ... she wants to get some of the others online too. TallStuff : well I'm outta here... TallStuff : >LaTassle Poof< AFL Don : You did, of course, use the installer... I'd suggest doing a completely-clean reinstall... CPT FA : I think I killed my HD... AFC Softy : Tried to get her to come to the AHW chat... but she doesn't have a modem at AFC Softy : home. :( AFA Fixit : How's that CPT? AFL Don : Ooooh, that sounds bad, CPT. What'd you do, drop it on the floor? Ophtho Bob : Yes I did Don. I tried reinstalling to no avail.Same problem. CPT FA : It started to lock up from time to time and now will not even boot up. AFL Don : Hmmmmm. The symptoms are so similar to the early problem, that it stretches coincidence to think that it's unrelated... AFL Don : CPT, do you have Deliverance or ProSel? AFA Fixit : Can you hear it spinning? CPT FA : No, I just played with it... I'm a PC user and it's for my kids... AFA Fixit : Can't hear it spin? CPT FA : I just got Universe Master in the mail today... AFA Fixit : Hiya Frank AFL Don : You need to run a diagnostic/repair utility on the HD, I think... CPT FA : It starts to spin... the light comes on and stays on... sometimes other times the light does AFA Fixit : Or give it a good slap. CPT FA : not even come on. AFA Fixit : Sounds like a simple approach is required. Take it apart, reseat the cables, put it back together. AFL Don : With the computer off, of course! BCS Frank : Computer power off, that is. CPT FA : Ok I'll try... first happened when I quit a teach doc w/o closing it first... AFA Fixit : That sounds like coincidence to me, CPT. AFL Don : you could have a bitmap problem that needs correcting... CPT FA : Since then (2 weeks) problem has gotten worse can't work it now... AFL Don : If you quit the document by powering down while the disk was writing, that could cause great grief... The getting-worse part sounds like bitmap problems... They escalate that way... Deliverance or ProSel will usually fix 'em automatically... ... although you may lose some files in the process. But it's the only game in town. AFA Fixit : The thing that gets me is the erratic action of the disk activity LED> CPT FA : No.. didn't power down but it did lock the HD light and froze the screen BCS Frank : How'd you get out of the freeze? AFA Fixit : You should be able to quit Teach without closing the document first. Should prompt you to save ... AFC Softy : Anyone seen the new HP DeskJets (520 and 560c) yet?? AFA Fixit : if you haven't. CPT FA : shut it down.. BCS Frank : 520 & 560? I haven't done lusting for the 550c yet! AFA Fixit : No, Larry, just heard the first local ad this morning on the way to work. AFC Softy : They're both 600x300 dpi printers. AFL Don : BTW, I hear that Inkjet technology is no SO good, that it's the method of choice used AFL Don : by counterfeiters... AFA Fixit : Definitely shouldn't trash your hard drive if you quit before closing a document. AFC Softy : (vs the old 300x300) BCS Frank : 520 & 560 work with the GS? CPT FA : I take it that Universe Master won't let me do the repairs I need? AFL Don : I'm not familiar with Universe Master... Maybe... BCS Frank : Hmmm... Don, could you post more details on those techniques? AFC Softy : Dunno Frank... depends on if they use the same commands as the 550's. AFC Softy : Frank... keep lusting after the 550.... 'cuz they just dropped another 100 AFC Softy : bucks in price. :) AFC Softy : Hey Speedy! :) SPEEDLIMIT : Hey Howdy and Hi :) AFL Don : 550 is $489 at Price Club now.. BCS Frank : Hmmm... if the 550c drive ever goes negative.... BCS Frank : Speed! :) SPEEDLIMIT : Softy :) Frank :) Fixit :) AFL Don : Hello, Marvin! LTNS! AFA Fixit : Hey, I'll buy one at -$100. ;) AFL Don : Yeah, at that price I'll take a million! SPEEDLIMIT : <<-- my DJ-500 is starting to act up on me :> arg BCS Frank : :) AFL Don : Howso, Marvin? SPEEDLIMIT : HiYa Don :) didn't see ya :) AFC Softy : The 520 is a B&W unit that sells for $279. AFA Fixit : What's the catch? SPEEDLIMIT : O when I print more than one page the second page feeds side ways sometimes CPT FA : Thanks for the help...:) SPEEDLIMIT : Also... BCS Frank : feeds sideways? Or prints sideways? AFL Don : Sounds like the feed rollers are going bad... AFA Fixit : Time to clean the feed rollers. Ophtho Bob : OK.Let me try again with my problem. I have a HD SCSI 80meg, IBM that I am AFL Don : ...or need good cleaning.. SPEEDLIMIT : the print gets skewed so that if you were looking at a straight line up and SPEEDLIMIT : down the line would be off SPEEDLIMIT : \ BCS Frank : Do you fan your paper before loading? AFC Softy : There is none as far as I know Walt, that was the price of it I saw in the ad. AFL Don : AFC Marvin says, he's found HP cooperative in selling new feed rollers cheap... AFA Fixit : I think the problem is that it's an IBM drive and the GS is rejecting it. ;) AFC Softy : (of course I may have missed the all important asterisk next to the price.) Ophtho Bob : trying to partition with Advanced Disk Utilities. I have an Apple HS SCSI and a AFL Don : The original HP500 warranty was 3 years, maybe it's still in warranty... Ophtho Bob : Zip 8 Mhz. SPEEDLIMIT : Don... I'm not sure that I could put it together once I take it apart though ; BCS Frank : Bob, did you change the SCSI ID number? SPEEDLIMIT : ;) SPEEDLIMIT : Don... I wish it were.. it was I think a year Ophtho Bob : How do I do that Frank? AFL Don : Mine is three years... BCS Frank : There should be, on the back of the HD, a thumb wheel or jumper block BCS Frank : or switch block. AFL Don : Give HP a call, ask 'em if there's a secret warranty on the problem. SPEEDLIMIT : <<-- trying to remember... I think I've had mine more than 3 years to be honest Ophtho Bob : There a row of 7 jumper switches on the front of the drive with a jumper block BCS Frank : IBM runs the opposite sequence on a SCSI chain as Apples and Macs, so SPEEDLIMIT : <<-- I've probably printed over 10,000 pages.. maybe even 20,000...not sure Tim : (Hi y'all) AFL Don : Hi Tim! LTNS! BCS Frank : there's a good chance you have the same ID number on your drive AFA Fixit : Howdy TIM, Mike. SPEEDLIMIT : Don ;) sure :) it wouldn't hurt ;) AFC Softy : -------------------=================[}}}} Tim!!!!! MikeC70434 : hi BCS Frank : and on tour SCSI card. Ophtho Bob : rather jumper pins not switches. BCS Frank : Tim, Hi! :) AFL Don : The HP500 design target was 50,000 pages before failure... Ophtho Bob : What should do frank? AFA Fixit : Sounds like a call to IBM support for technical details on the drive may be in order. AFL Don : hello, Mike, welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat! AFL Don : First time with us, Mike? BCS Frank : Move jumpers... also you may have terminator conflicts. BCS Frank : Hi, Mike :) Ophtho Bob : What should I ask them Walt? Tim : (How's system performance tonight, seems pretty fast here) MikeC70434 : looking for a BBS conn service AFA Fixit : If it works on a Mac I wouldn't think that it's a SCSI ID conflict. BCS Frank : Crisp here, Tim. BCS Frank : Did the drive work on a Mac? AFA Fixit : At least if it's the only device on the SCSI bus. AFA Fixit : I'd ask for an installation guide. AFC Softy : (Other than it taking four tries to get in it's been fine here, Tim. :) BCS Frank : If so I'd think terminator as Macs are more tolerant, sometimes, of that. Ophtho Bob : Yes and it also works on the GS after I eject all the partitions that it says Tim : Softy, that's capacity. :D Big diff. Tim : :D SPEEDLIMIT : Thanks Don... by the way if I did take it to someone how much would you think Ophtho Bob : are on the HD. BCS Frank : "eject the partitions? SPEEDLIMIT : it would cost to change the rollers and maybe the Rubber band on the AFL Don : Mike, not sure what it is you're seeking... BCS Frank : eject? AFC Softy : (Tim's probably on the Stratus console, so no wonder it screams on his end. ;D) SPEEDLIMIT : tractor that carries the Ink Cartridge. AFL Don : Seriously, Larry, I'd call HP, ask if there's a secret warranty. I did that with my HP48SX calculator, and there was, they sent me a new calculator. But I had to ask! AFC Softy : (or the Stratus console even.. ;) Tim : LOL! Nah, I'm dialed in like the rest of ya (at 9600 however) AFA Fixit : Cheater! SPEEDLIMIT : COOL :) I'll do that ;) Ophtho Bob : I get a message after partitioning successfully and rebooting from either the Ophtho Bob : HD or a 3.5 of GSOS stating that "There are two disks named HD1. You must Ophtho Bob : rename or eject the one in device .Apple SCSI.HD02.01 MikeC70434 : looking for away to conn to other BBS AFL Don : System's been bulletproof for me, last few days, Tim! AFA Fixit : Need software Mike? Tim : A lot of code has been rewritten over the past few weeks. Also a lot of hardware added. BCS Frank : Mike, what kind of computer are you running? AFL Don : OIC, Mike... You can E-mail to CIS, etc., through InterNet. AFC Softy : I got frozen out once this weekend....but it really has been MUCH better in the AFC Softy : last few weeks. SPEEDLIMIT : <<-- stupid Mac/GS Question about 1 Meg Simms and NIBBLE MODE Question ??? ;) AFL Don : Hello, DNAFORSCI! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat! MikeC70434 : ll Si Ophtho Bob : This goes on for 21 partitions. AFL Don : Hello, Soora! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat! AFA Fixit : I'd try simplifying the SCSI chain before getting too crazy, Bob SPEEDLIMIT : I have a chance to wheel and deal about 1,000 Megs of Sims and make about Ophtho Bob : and I only divided the HD into 3. SPEEDLIMIT : $4,000 bucks. The Problem is that I'm Not sure that the NIBBLE MODE is a SPEEDLIMIT : problem for IIGS or Older Mac's like the LC and LC II. Anyone know much about SPEEDLIMIT : this ???? AFA Fixit : It almost sounds like the drive is set to the same ID as the SCSI card. It might be easier to change AFA Fixit : the ID on the card than the drive. AFL Don : That sounds like a possibility, Walt.. AFC Softy : afk a minute :) AFL Don : Hello, Marck! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat! AFA Fixit : The LC and LCII aren't my idea of older Macs. Ophtho Bob : How can I do that Walt? AFL Don : Hello, Marvin! SPEEDLIMIT : Fixit.. they are too many in the resale dept ;) but that is another story AFA Fixit : There's a set of DIP switches on the High Speed SCSI for the ID. AFC Marvin : Good evening Don and the rest of the group. AFA Fixit : Hi Marvin SPEEDLIMIT : My worry is that if I sell this RAM and it comes back that I won't be able Ophtho Bob : OK. What should I change them to? SPEEDLIMIT : to return the RAM to the vendor that is offering it to me... Promises or No AFC Softy : bak :) SPEEDLIMIT : promises ;) and NO I don't want to end up with a Lawyer who's going to eat SPEEDLIMIT : everyone's lunch ;) if ya know what I mean ;) AFA Fixit : Anything that is not already in use on the SCSI chain that is different from the current settings. AFA Fixit : Do you have the manual for the card? Ophtho Bob : No Walt but I 'll try and get one. SPEEDLIMIT : Fixit... do you know if the Apple IIGS would have a problem with Nibble Mode Ophtho Bob : I have the HS SCSI utilities disk. SPEEDLIMIT : Chips via Simms ??? AFA Fixit : Speed, I can barely remember reference to Nibble Mode in reference to memory access. AFL Don : Can you get a sample, Speed, w/o buying the whole load blind? SPEEDLIMIT : No Problem. I'll figure it out even if I have to call Apple INC ;) AFA Fixit : GS and really early Macs only have problems with RAM that doesn't support CAS before RAS addressing AFC Softy : (and here I thought Speed was referring to an old Apple II magazine ;) SPEEDLIMIT : I remember that, but I wasn't sure about NIBBLE.. to be honest I didn't SPEEDLIMIT : even ever know about Nibble etc till today actually ;) LOL SPEEDLIMIT : ROTFL Softy ;) AFA Fixit : It's very obscure by my experience. AFL Don : ho ho... Ophtho Bob : Thank you for your Help All. Gotta run and try a few things to see if they work. AFL Don : Let us know, Bob! Ophtho Bob : I will :-) SPEEDLIMIT : Don... I'd do that, but I'm going to ask Apple and send some samples to the AFA Fixit : Almost sounds like an addressing mode that was used by old minicomputers. SPEEDLIMIT : people that I'm talking to about selling some. I just thought that if it was AFA Fixit : Is it that they don't support it? SPEEDLIMIT : a NO NO that I'd definitely here that here if it was very well know FACT :) SPEEDLIMIT : Fixit... problem is that I know three small independent RAM SIMM Manufactures SPEEDLIMIT : that work on the fringes so to speak. And while the product is good in my SPEEDLIMIT : humble opinion, usually I've only supplied chips and never sold the end SPEEDLIMIT : product. So this is a bit different for me to handle and I don't want to SPEEDLIMIT : burn in HECK for it ;) AFL Don : hello, Norm! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum chat... J Norm : Hi Don AFA Fixit : You could query some of the RAM vendors as to whether they support it or not. AFL Don : Think you'd better prepare for some Maalox moments, Speed.. AFA Fixit : I'd suppose that there are more than a few online. SPEEDLIMIT : I have... conflicting info still at this point. I may drop it unless I'm SPEEDLIMIT : absolutely certain since this could cost me about 20G if I make a mistake. AFA Fixit : If the margin is high enough and there are no obvious flaws in the product, I'd be likely to go AFA Fixit : with it, but then I've dabble in surplus hardware now and then. SPEEDLIMIT : Exactly... I just want to be sure that its good ;) SPEEDLIMIT : <<-- besides I've always been on the UP and UP so it's good practice to SPEEDLIMIT : be sure about it all :) AFA Fixit : I've got a good deal of surplus hardware... SPEEDLIMIT : what is it ??? AFL Don : Hello, Gary! AFA Fixit : If you get a few samples, I could test it in most everything from a GS to a Quadra. What speed? AFC Softy : ("Bullseye SIMMs... another quality product from II Productive"....) AFC Softy : Hey Gary! :) AFL GaryJ : Hello! AFL GaryJ : (slow node here tonight!) AFA Fixit : How about Zapco Memory Products? AFL Don : Nimble here... SPEEDLIMIT : 1 by 8 - 10ns 1meg standard SIMM module. Nibble Mode SPEEDLIMIT : ROTFL Softy ;) AFC Softy : (Darn Gary.... Tim was just here asking everyone about system performance.. ;) SPEEDLIMIT : Softy.. actually it would be a WHITE BOX sale ;) AFA Fixit : Hywa Gary. AFL GaryJ : I noticed that things got faster over the weekend (if you could get online). SPEEDLIMIT : 10 = 100 ns by the way AFC Marvin : Hello Gary, speed seems fine to me here tonight. Especially since I am on at 9600 for the first time. SPEEDLIMIT : Marvin.. you using the 2GS tonight ? AFL Don : Worst case, I've had to dial twice to connect, last couple of weeks... AFA Fixit : 100ns limits it to 25 Mhz machines and lower. AFL Don : No freeze outs at all.. AFC Softy : <---- forever chugging along at 2400 ;) AFL Don : hello, again, Soora! AFA Fixit : You have a toll free 9600 dialup? SPEEDLIMIT : Fixit.. which was why I was saying that supposedly this is for older Macs AFC Marvin : No, Speed, AOL doesn't support 9600 for the II so I am using a new modem in my PowerBook 170. AFL GaryJ : We must have an overloaded SprintNet bank here. (Keep getting busy signals). SPEEDLIMIT : <<<-- I thought so... Marvin... I could dream right ;) AFA Fixit : I could test a set in a GS, Plus, SE, LC, LCII, Mac II, IIx, IIcx. SPEEDLIMIT : Fixit... how about 3,000 PC Power supplies for $5,000 bucks ;) AFA Fixit : If this is a real deal, you should be able to buy a sample. AFC Marvin : Yes, Walt I have two toll free 9600 numbers from work where I am tonight. I have to check to see if SPEEDLIMIT : Fixit.. send me an address ;) maybe we can make a little money if I'm sure ;) AFC Marvin : these same two numbers are toll free from home. I am sure one of them is but not sure about the other AFA Fixit : Call a major liquidator for that sale AFC Softy : Gary.... my backup node here is a SprintNet and it always seems to be busy when AFC Softy : I let the software fall through. AFL Don : I've got a toll-free 9600 number, just no fast modem :( AFC Marvin : Yes, speed, I have an external 14.4 for the II SPEEDLIMIT : Fixit.. I have. Most of them are in Vegas right now wheeling and Dealing ;) AFC Marvin : GS but cannot use it on AOL. AFC Softy : That PB 180 I want is getting more attractive now that Apple dropped the price AFC Softy : another 10%. :) BCS Frank : You should be able to use the 14.4 (at 2400) on AOL. BCS Frank : For the GS just turn off the error correcting routines. AFC Softy : (..and I got my big check off my mutual fund investment this week. :) SPEEDLIMIT : Anyone experience being BUMPED off here to a completely BLUE SCREEN before ? SPEEDLIMIT : Bumped I meant AFC Marvin : Right Frank, I regularly get on AOL with the 14.4 external modem and the IIGS at 2400. SPEEDLIMIT : I was Bumped about it though ;) AFL GaryJ : Blue screen? Only if you have your screen colors set to blue :) BCS Frank : Depends what screen colors I have set. :) AFL Don : That's the old peaking-coil problem... AFC Softy : I've crashed into a blank screen before. AFA Fixit : Have had a 32.bis modem for over a year now, other than work, no place to call full speed. SPEEDLIMIT : What's that mean... Don ? AFL Don : if the margin is blue, too... AFA Fixit : White on dark blue. BCS Frank : That's no fun! Who wants to call work? (Aside from Tim) :) SPEEDLIMIT : Got it.. Fixit :) AFL Don : You mean you haven't read the article RGB-->G--RGB? AFC Marvin : No, never have crashed to a blank screen. Don may be right about the peaking coil failure. AFA Fixit : Don't like a ring around the screen. AFA Fixit : It's very convenient to be able to pull things from home from time to time. AFL Don : ...although the peaking-coil failures aren't known to be intermittent... SPEEDLIMIT : Peaking Coil... Not sure what that is ? SPEEDLIMIT : is that within the GS ??? BCS Frank : Peeking coil? Sounds indecent! AFC Softy : Don... for a while it seemed it was a timed thing. :) AFL Don : Check out the article, Speed. Odds are you'll save money by reading it... SPEEDLIMIT : LOL Frank ;) AFA Fixit : It's also nice to pretend I'm at work while I'm home. SPEEDLIMIT : Where, what Article LOL AFL Don : ...could be an intermittent, the problem just usually is a permanent failure. AFL Don : In the AHW Best of library... SPEEDLIMIT : <<-- has me worried now AFC Softy : Walt... use Wisk to get rid of that pesky "ring around the screen". ;) AFL Don : Nah, it's an easy fix, but it'll cost you up to $200 if you don't have the info in the AFL Don : article... AFA Fixit : Just set the border to dark blue. AFC Softy : <-- paid the $200 :) AFC Softy : (but mine blew before Don's did. :) SPEEDLIMIT : does the screen on the monitor sometimes move in and out ??? AFL Don : The problem'll probably hit us all, sooner or later, if hasn't thus far... AFA Fixit : I don't have an Apple monitor, so I'll probably have different problems. AFL Don : That can be a high-voltage regulation problem, Speed. Might be related.. AFL Don : The peaking-coil failure is usually instantaneous, though, happens at startup. SPEEDLIMIT : The only thing is that it only happens when I'm ONLINE... never during or SPEEDLIMIT : using my GS with anything else though ! AFC Softy : Don... it seemed it hit everyone we knew at the same time 18 months ago. :) AFL Don : Right, Walt, you're on your own! AFA Fixit : That's when most failures occur. At startup. AFL Don : True, Larry, but I'm still getting mail from grateful users who're just now getting it... SPEEDLIMIT : brb AFC Softy : Don... were they all older IIgs monitors??? AFL Don : I think any of the monitors made by Mitsubishi are vulnerable... AFC Softy : This is the new Apple II OH Lobby :) AFL Don : No time window that I'm aware of... AFC Marvin : Don, remember the fellow that had the jittery video problem that turned out to be the power supply AFC Marvin : connector in his IIGS? Contact cleaner on the Molex connector seems to have stopped that problem. AFL Don : Yes... bad contact on the power plug, as I recall... AFL Don : Another common problem that's probably made a lot of money for shops... AFC Softy : I still need to get a hold of some Tweek for my slot boards. AFL Don : That's fantastic stuff... AFC Softy : ..and the P/S connector. SPEEDLIMIT : Was the file called... KERMIT ??? AFC Softy : It's almost routine for me now when my system refuses to boot to open up the SPEEDLIMIT : the one that you thought I should get ? AFL Don : Yeah, that was the file name I used when I uploaded it. Kermit, Green, you know.... AFC Marvin : Tweek is really Stabilant 22 made by PW Electro Chem Ltd in Canada. Phone: 416-889-1522. AFC Softy : lid, pull the cards out an scrub the contacts with an eraser. AFL Don : But it's in the library as RGB-->G-->RGB SPEEDLIMIT : Thanks Don :) I'll read it :) AFC Softy : I should have dropped by the electronics store last Tuesday when I was on jury AFA Fixit : Eraser is not good for repeated use on contacts AFC Softy : duty and checked to see if they had any. AFL Don : Definitely! Benign neglect is better for contacts that haven't failed yet... AFL Don : Once you start cleaning contacts aggressively with abrasive, you can't stop 'til all the AFL Don : gold is gone.... AFC Softy : I know Walt... it's a trick I learned when trouble shooting old transistorized AFC Softy : PC boards in the control chassis on a pin setter. AFL Don : Hello, Andy! Andy Stein : Hi, Don. AFL Don : Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat! AFC Softy : Hey Andy! LTNS! Andy Stein : Nice to see you, Softy. :) AFC Softy : How's school coming along?? BCS Frank : Andy! :) Andy Stein : Fine, thank you. This Wednesday marks the beginning of Spring break, so I'm preparing to relax. Andy Stein : Hello, Frank. :) BCS Frank : Don, just use some spray-on gold foil to replace the contacts. :) AFL GaryJ : (Why does spring break start in the middle of a week? :) AFL Don : Last time I broke a spring it happened in the middle of the road... AFL Don : Yeah, right, Frank! Andy Stein : I don't know. They're goofy. :) Andy Stein : Must've been in Vermont... (rough roads there). AFL Don : :) SPEEDLIMIT : Walt... I hope My E-Mail makes sense ;) AFL GaryJ : Don :) AFC Softy : I got home tonight and had a call on my machine that one had broke on one of AFL GaryJ : Probably on a Wednesday, too :) AFC Softy : my machines at work. :) AFL Don : :) BCS Frank : Could've been in Massachusetts... some of the local pot holes are old enough to BCS Frank : vote. AFC Softy : Don.... I thought they tore down the 880?? ;) Andy Stein : Now, when is LRO going to release that damned DSP board? :) Andy Stein : LOL Andy Stein : If you were in West Virginia, you wouldn't have that problem. Every square inch there is paved, even Andy Stein : the floor of the river. AFC Softy : Probably when Bill St Pierre get TurboRez done. ;) Andy Stein : Frank, does the BCS have shareware CD-ROM collections for the Apple II as well as for the Macintosh? BCS Frank : Sorry, Andy, no BCS/Apple II/CD-ROM. :( Andy Stein : No problem. There is one for the Macintosh, though, isn't there? BCS Frank : :) AFC Softy : Well I have to take off and go destroy some bowling pins. :) SPEEDLIMIT : Frank... At one point or the other we have all heard their SPEEELLL ;) AFC Softy : (or the lane... ;) AFA Fixit : Well, it's late and I should get to bed. Andy Stein : I've heard rumors that Bill Heineman has completed Castle Wolfenstein 3-D for the GS. SPEEDLIMIT : Night Walt :) AFC Softy : Seeya latah.... :) BCS Frank : Right, Speed.... what a waste. AFL Don : Thanks, Walt... CU Andy Stein : Nice to see you all. AFC Softy : Speed... ;) AFA Fixit : AFC Softy : You too Andy :) BCS Frank : Andy, how's that going to be marketed? SPEEDLIMIT : <<-- too dumb ;) just a little... Softy ;) Andy Stein : I'll try to attend more conferences more often. AFL Don : Please do! Andy Stein : I heard that Softdisk GS was going to distribute it on one of its monthly disks, but, apparently, Andy Stein : there have been some legal problems that have delayed its release.
