2/7/94 6:28:27 PM Opening ÒChat Log 2/7/94Ó for recording. AFL Don : Hello AFL Don : Hello, Fred... AFL Don : Getting lonely here... Fred SoCal : Hi Don, are we it tonight AFL Don : I had bigtime trouble getting on tonight, guess everyone else is having the same... AFL Don : So we're it... AFL Don : So far, anyway... Fred SoCal : Same here kept saying report problem #4 AFL Don : Walt's in the UK this week, so he won't be here... Fred SoCal : I AFL Don : Wish they'd change the messages... AFL Don : so wot's new/ AFL Don : ? Fred SoCal : oops, I been trying to get on since 6:20 Fred SoCal : thats 9:20 EST AFL Don : Gets tedious, doesn't it... AFL Don : hello, Marvin! Fred SoCal : Especially when they tell you its your hard drive or system 6 or some other... AFL Don : Small group tonight! AFC Marvin : Hello Don & Fred! Fred SoCal : Hi Marv Fred SoCal : oh well.... AFL Don : Any trouble getting on tonight, Marvin? AFC Marvin : At least no problem signing on or getting into the chat area tonight. I zoomed right in. AFL Don : Fred wasn't able to get on until just now, so I was here by my lonesome for about 10 minutes... Fred SoCal : Tell us how it's done. AFL Don : Walt won't be here tonight, as his company sent him to the UK for a week.. AFC Marvin : Fred. I did not do anything special to get on tonight so maybe I was lucky. AFL Don : That's a Mac beta version of the AOL software, Fred... AFL Don : Did you try the new version of AppleWorks 4.0.2 yet Fred? There's an update disk in the NAUG section of APR... free for the download... Fred SoCal : I have not DL the update yet and I do have AW 4.0 AFL Don : I haven't tried the update yet, but will tomorrow. AFC Marvin : Hello Frank! BCS Frank : Don, Fred, Marvin! :) AFL Don : Hey, Frank! Welcome to AO's smallest chat! Fred SoCal : I am waiting for my UltraMacro from Quality to arrive. Fred SoCal : Hi Frank :) AFC Marvin : Frank, I am still looking for a home for my old, but new looking, s100 bus computer. BCS Frank : You mean this here micro-chat? Wave of the future, it is. :) AFL Don : I haven't ordered UM yet, so AW4.0 won't fill my bill for grading, so I'm using AW3.0 this semester. BCS Frank : s100 bus? I used to drool about them before I could actually get my hands on a 'puter. :) AFC Marvin : Me too, I could hardly wait to get that IMSAI 8080 built so I could see it come to life. AFC Marvin : It amazed me when it did come to life. Fred SoCal : I can't function with out my macros so I'm still using my AW 3.0 w/ UM 3.1 AFL Don : Funny what used to turn us on... I went to an HP show when they unveiled their first little computer. AFL Don : Wanted one the worst way... Looking back, it was super primitive... BCS Frank : Yeah.... I remember bucking the BCS Frank : crowds trying to get a Sinclair/Timex 1000.... BCS Frank : .... never did get one. Fred SoCal : At the risk of revealing my age... I remember when HP had a $300 calculator BCS Frank : But, hey, what's primitive? Last year's stuff, right? AFL Don : ...and that's the way it was, in the Silicon Age... BCS Frank : J Norm, Hi! :) Fred SoCal : Hi J Norm J Norm : Hi Fred AFL Don : hello, Norm! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat.. AFL Don : First time with us? J Norm : Yes BCS Frank : Fred SoCal : Don, I was a very poor college boy and used a P&E sliderule. AFL Don : Hey, Frank, I still use my slide rules!... BCS Frank : Why not? The first few transistors cost like $600 each... it takes a little BCS Frank : time for prices to come down. BCS Frank : Right... the slip stick batteries never run down. :) AFL Don : My slide rules run on peanut-butter sandwiches... AFL Don : I'm partial to circular rules. When you're stuck for an answer, you can always spin 'em... Fred SoCal : I think my first calculator was a TI-30 for about $30 from Sears around late seventies. AFC Marvin : I also have a couple of slipsticks here too. But I never had a expensive one. BCS Frank : And now a sandwich at a good sub shop costs more than a trig-function calculator at CVS. AFL Don : I don't regret the bux for the HP35 at all, 'cause I learned to program by working out keystroke routines... AFC Marvin : True Frank, I started with a TI calculator that I bought at the student store at Cal State LA. AFL Don : I use my HP48SX to check test-key solutions for my college-algebra class... Quite a step up from the original calculators... AFC Marvin : I remember it cost me $125 and it was only a four function plus square root. AFC Marvin : I finally let my mom use it for a while until she complained it no longer worked. I thought the rechargeable battery had gone bad but not so. It really died. Fred SoCal : I have used a sci calc with hexidecimals to "cheat" on some games I have. AFL Don : Some of the cheapy calculators that put the chips onto the circuit boards under epoxy seemed to die after a time... BCS Frank : It's going to be very hard for the techno-archeologists to understand BCS Frank : the late 20th Century. Fred SoCal : The old "red eye" specials that used leds.? AFL Don : Yeah, right! I bought an external power supply for my HP67, carried a big battery around in my briefcase so I could use the calculator away from line plugs... AFC Marvin : Before the days of LCD's I gave my wife her first digital watch. You had to push the button to read the time. Even so it was a battery consumer. AFL Don : That was before CMOS, I think... AFL Don : Hello, Larry... BCS Frank : Larry, Hi :) FCP Sider : Hi Don, Frank! Fred SoCal : Hi Larry :) AFC Marvin : Hello Larry, welcome to the big crowd of five. BCS Frank : Heck, that was before Carter, right? AFL Don : Slow start tonight, very few able to make it on, apparently... BCS Frank : Really? BCS Frank : No delay popping on here. AFL Don : We're reminiscing about early calculators... FCP Sider : Fred, Marvin, Lots of snow here for a change. BCS Frank : Course I didn't try here until recently. AFC Marvin : I had no trouble getting on either tonight. Fred SoCal : You are obviously not here in So Calif, rain and about 60 degrees AFL Don : 45 degrees here and LOTS of rain... AFC Marvin : Larry, were are you that you are getting all the snow? BCS Frank : Maybe I wasn't paying attention. :) FCP Sider : I got some mail from Finland today from a person who wants to drum up information on a hard drive... FCP Sider : system made in England called ICE, anyone ever hear of them? BCS Frank : AFL Don : There are some SHARP computer types in Finland, I think... BCS Frank : ICE? Nope. AFL Don : ...Have never heard of ICE, computerwise, anyway... AFC Marvin : ICE must be European. Fred SoCal : Institue of Chemical Education?? AFL Don : Hello, Nancy! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat... AFL Don : First time with us? AFC Marvin : Good evening Nancy! BCS Frank : Any chance it's made by an American subsidiary? Fred SoCal : Hi Nancy:) BCS Frank : Nancy, Hi! :) FCP Sider : He says it runs Apple Pascal on the IIE he has but he wants to find a way to switch it over to ProDos. AFL Don : I'll betcha Walt knows, but he's in Europe tonight... FCP Sider : He was hoping it was somehow related to the Sider drives. Nancy k695 : after a welcome like that think I might stay! Hi everyone but I actually wandered in here by mistake. Bye BCS Frank : Sounds like a Sider. AFL Don : If it's got a Pascal section, that's a good guess... My guess is that ICE might be a precursor to IDE Fred SoCal : Thoughtless of him not to log on from over there, maybe he doesn't have the European number BCS Frank : With any luck it was set up to run the Paris OS on the Soviet Apple II clones AFL Don : Yeah, right! I doubt if SprintNet has any UK nodes yet! FCP Sider : He's been communicating with a person I know who is on the Internet. BCS Frank : Bye, Nancy, come by again! :) AFC Marvin : Bye Nancy. AFL Don : That's ok, Nancy, we're glad to have you with us! AFL Don : What kind of computer do you use? Nancy k695 : who me? AFL Don : Sure! Nancy k695 : Mac (Centris) AFL Don : Great! Although this is the Apple 2 area, there are many similarities between Macs and the Apple 2GS AFC Marvin : Nancy, Mac PowerBook 170 here tonight. AFL Don : Mac PowerBook 170 here, also... AFL Don : But I'm an avid proponent of the Apple-2 computers, too... FCP Sider : And a lot of us here do have Mac's. Nancy k695 : I feel wanted :) AFL Don : You are! Fred SoCal : SOME OF US still use IIs AFC Marvin : The other computer on the desk is a IIGS. BCS Frank : of course.... you're a 'puter user. AFL Don : Right Fred, I do too, run a BBS on a //e Nancy k695 : but I really am moving along. Thanks. Fred SoCal : :) AFL Don : Please drop in again, sometime soon, Nancy! BCS Frank : Fair well! Fred SoCal : awk AFL Don : Any more earthquakes, Fred? BCS Frank : Has anyone seen the Bernoulli sale at MacWareHouse? AFL Don : No, I haven't read their latest catalog yet... BCS Frank : akkk... Syquest, not Bernoulli.... BCS Frank : 44 meg drives $239 AFL Don : That's not too bad... Fred SoCal : back Fred SoCal : No, I haven't noticed any of the aftershocks, I'm about 40-50 miles away. AFL Don : Hello, David! Welcome to the Apple Hardware Forum Chat! BCS Frank : might make a nice GS add on. AFL Don : First time with us? AFC Marvin : Night before last we felt three aftershocks. BCS Frank : Hi, David :) Fred SoCal : News here says that one of the big aftershocks finished off some bldgs. DavidR5555 : Hi AFL Don : Some of my ham friends in So Cal are getting really tired of the aftershocks.. AFC Marvin : Hello David! AFL Don : What computer do you use, David? Fred SoCal : Hi David :) DavidR5555 : I am a first timer. I just traded in the //e Fred SoCal : What is your location, Marvin? AFC Marvin : Fred, I am in La Canada, so I am about half way between you and the epicenter. AFC Marvin : David, what did you replace the IIE with? Fred SoCal : Thats right, remember you saying that a while ago. DavidR5555 : IBM 486 AFL Don : Traded it in? Hmmm.. first time I've heard of a dealer taking trades! Fred SoCal : I use a Syquest 44 for back up and for games for my kids (and wife) :) DavidR5555 : Well I actually gave it to my daughter AFL Don : Well.... Hope you like the IBM world... AFL Don : Ok, then maybe you can use it from time to time when you're overwhelmed by nostalgia1 AFL Don : ! Fred SoCal : I have about 6 or 7 extra platters for my backups for my TMS shadows. DavidR5555 : I don't know it's different AFL Don : It's different, all right! DavidR5555 : I got started on a 2K TI and thought 64 K was incredible AFL Don : Well, I'm gonna have to leave abruptly tonight... Wife just informed me that we have a plumbing emergency... Some kind of leak under the sink... DavidR5555 : bye AFL Don : Water running onto the kitchen floor... Fred SoCal : That sounds like no fun, Don :( BCS Frank : akk... luck, Don! AFL Don : Yeah, I hate plumbing problems... FCP Sider : Tell her to stop running the water and put a bucket under the drain trap. FCP Sider : Good luck Don!!! Fred SoCal : crick in the neck time AFL Don : I did! Word for word, Larry! (Guess you know how that went over!) AFL Don : Anyway, see everyone later! Bye.. BCS Frank : Hi, Sir Dex :) Fred SoCal : bye all, got to move on. 2/7/94 9:29:19 PM Closing Log file.
