For what seems like forever, I've been trying to figure out how to get Deluxepaint II to work on my hard drive and with GS/OS 5.0.2. If anyone else has been having this problem, read on. Note: The information here came from two sources: A2-Central (April issue) and Nibble's Ask Nibble column (May issue). Both magazines are an excellent source of information. Another Note: I am using one of Apple's older SCSI cards. Actually not -that- old. It has the version C ROMS. However there is now a new DMA SCSI card from Apple that does things much faster. If you have one of those, then you may have a new SCSIHD.Driver without the problem that I outline below in the GS/OS 5.0.2 SCSIHD.Driver. If such is the case, skip the part below about disabling and reenabling the SCSIHD.Manager The Procedure: 1) From the finder, find the file SCSIHD.Driver. It is in the Drivers folder which is in the System folder. Click once on SCSIHD.Driver and press OpenApple-I. This will bring up a window with some information about that file. There are two little squares in the upper right hand corner of this window. Click on the inactive square. You have now deactivated the SCSIHD.Driver. There is a good reason to do this. This driver has a bug that does not allow you to copy files >256K into your hard drive correctly. If you don't use the finder, simply delete this file (But make sure you have a copy of this file on your backup GS/OS 5.0.2 disk!!!). 2) Now reboot the IIGS. You will get a message during bootup about the need to have a SCSI driver installed. Ignore this message and press RETURN. The system will generate it's own SCSI driver now. 3) After booting, copy everything from the DeluxePaint disk to your hard drive (preferably to a folder named whatever you want to name it. How about 'DeluxePaint'!) except the System folder and Prodos. 4) Now go back to your file SCSIHD.Driver and reactivate it (Click on it, Press OpenApple-I, then click on the inactive box. Or put SCSIHD.Driver back into the driver folder if you had removed it). 5) Reboot again. Now your old friend SCSIHD.Driver is back in control again. Even though he has his faults (and what friend doesn't!) he's probably better to use than the generated driver for most normal operations. 6) Now launch Basic.System. 7) Set the prefix to the folder where DeluxePaint is kept. For example, if your hard drive is named H1 and you named the folder where you put the DeluxePaint program into it, DELUXEPAINT, Type: PREFIX /H1/DeluxePaint then press 8) Type: BLOAD DELUXEPAINT,A768,L1,B$19C12,T$B3 then press Type: POKE 768,1 then press Type: BSAVE DELUXEPAINT,A768,L1,B$19C12,T$B3 then press 9) Type: BYE then . You should now be at the finder or whatever other launcher you used. Run DeluxePaint. Does it work? GREAT!! Another Note: In the May issue of Nibble (in the Ask Nibble column), there is also a patch to get Paintworks Gold to work with GS/OS 5.0.2. I do not have Paintworks Gold, so I cannot attest that it will work. However, the part above about disabling and reenabling the SCSIHD.Driver should work with Paintworks Gold too. In addition to the fine magazines I listed above, these are highly recommended for the IIGS user: 1) GS+ (check out the GS+ stack online!) 2) Softdisk GS A special thanks to all of you people who keep uploading programs, hints, cheats, patches, artwork etc. on line. We almost never thank you, but we DO appreciate you!! Lalanovich
