AFL Scott  Tonight, we were originally scheduled to have a 
AFL Scott  special guest onhand, but none were found.  So, 
AFL Scott  I thought it would be a good time to let you all 
AFL Scott  know about something that should change the way 
AFL Scott  alot of people feel about Apple IIGS graphics. 
AFL Scott  Allison.  You've probably seen that name floating 
AFL Scott  around ATB for a few days, now.  Who is Allison? 
AFL Scott  Allison was my daughter.  My way to show you how 
AFL Scott  I felt about her is Allison -- the program.  What is 
AFL Scott  Allison?  Allison is the control program for the 
AFL Scott  Enhanced Vision Plus Digitizer.  What does Allison do? 
AFL Scott  Simple.  Allison, in conjuction with the Enhanced 
AFL Scott  Vision Plus creates the best 16 color pictures in the 
AFL Scott  world -- no exceptions.  Who wrote Allison?  Jonah 
AFL Scott  Stich and me.  In two weeks, Allison will be released 
AFL Scott  to the world.  Demo pictures, and a demo program will 
AFL Scott  be available exclusively on America Online for a period 
AFL Scott  of one week.  After the one week wait, it will be made 
AFL Scott  available to other online services.   Allison, as an 
AFL Scott  upgrade to Perfect View will cost approximately $25 to $35.00 
AFL Scott  final price has not been settled.  At the time of release, 
AFL Scott  Allison will be included with each Enhanced Vision Plus. 
AFL Scott  Allison... Support those who support you! 
AFL Scott  There... I'm done, now.  If you have any questions at

Terl       How good are the pictures?

AFC Tosh   Right to the point! 
AFL Scott  The pictures are better than Amiga digitized pictures.  I've been
	 told by 
AFL Bobloo That's really exciting stuff, Scott.. 
Terl       when will the demo come out? 
AFL Scott  an Amiga owner that the pictures in 16 color, are equal to or of
	 greater  
AFL Scott  quality than Ham mode graphics... The demo will be online in two
	 weeks  
AFL Scott  barring catastrophe 
GuS Grafix I can't wait to see the demo pictures, Scott!  <tho another
	 digitizer itself... 
MauriceG1  What file type? When's the DEMO come out? 
GuS Grafix is WAY down the line, for now> 
AFL Scott  The filetype for the raw images is undecided at this time.  I'm

AFL Scott  It is the Visionary board with better software!:)  MUCH better

AFL Marty  Visionary is the name of the digitizer board (read hardware) 
AFL Scott  Jonah, why do don't you tell everyone about Allison/3200. :)

AFL Marty  Allison (software) processes the raw images created by
	 Visionary. 
AFL Bobloo (And will it work with the older AST board? ) 
AFL Scott  The digitizer is currently made by Silicon and Software. 
AFL Scott  Unfortunately, no, the Rom on the Enhanced Vision Plus is
	 different than 
ShanoJ     Okay! :) While I was helping Scott with Allison, I kinda whipped
	 out a 3200 
ShanoJ     collor version. It creates some of the pest dammed pictures I've
	 EVER seen 
AFL Scott  the ROM on the old AST Board. 
AFL Bobloo Oh well...so now I've got to upgrade my board...:) 
ShanoJ     on a GS (though, it's interesting to note that there isn't THAT
	 much  
AFC Tosh   Sounds like a good reason to upgrade now. 
AFL Marty  pest? :) 
ShanoJ     improvement over Scott's standard 16 color pictures, which is
	 really neat!).  
AFL Scott  Additionally, each board sold will go through my hands first. 
	 That way, I can 
ShanoJ     If I do say so myself, it's the nicest program I've written yet.
	 I'm hoping 
AFL Scott  be sure you are getting the best quality pictures the board can
	 deliver. 
ShanoJ     to make the first version of Convert/3200 have an interface that
	 is very 
ShanoJ     similar! :) 
AFL Scott  It is Jonah!  It's great!:) 
AFL Scott  Now then, Allison will be shown at AppleFest, By me... at the New
	 Concepts, Inc 
AFL Scott  booth.  However, at this time, we have no agreement with New
	 Concepts.  So, if 
AFL Scott  in two weeks, the agreement hasn't been finalized, I will ship
	 Allison myself 
AFL Scott  until the agreement comes through.  We do NOT anticipate any
	 problems in the

AFL Bobloo Whats it cost me to update my AST board to the Enhanced Vision
	 Plus? 
AFL Scott  320 gray, 320 color, 640 gray.  We opted to NOT include 640 mode
	 at this time 
AFL Scott  to see how the "Support those who support you theme" will work. 
	 This is an  
AFL Scott  important time, and it wasn't my desire to compete with any of the
	 other  
AFL Scott  graphic conversion programs.  Instead, we opted to give them the
	 best the 
AFL Scott  GS had to offer.  Re-inventing the wheel is counter productive,
	 IMHO.  Super 
AFL Scott  Convert and the Graphics Exchange (the new one) do OUTSTANDING 320
	 to 640 mode 
Mac Hater  so no one here besides AFL Scott & "loanee" Lucky24 even owns a
	 EV+?  :( 
AFL Scott  conversions, so you're not left out in the cold.  Additionally,
	 all the  
AFL Scott  software is compatible, so there should be no big problem. 
AFL Scott  Upgrades.... 
ShanoJ     Hell, I don't even have one, and I helped write the stuff! :) 
AFL Scott  Upgrades are currently available through New Concepts at a cost of
	 $99. This 
AFL Marty  What's the price on an EV+ board? 
AFL Scott  involves the ROM upgrade, and new circuitry to help eliminate
	 noise and crashes 
AFL Scott  when video is lost. 
AFL Bobloo So I send them the board...and they send me a new one? 
AFL Scott  The board retails for 329.00 but can be had for as low as 249 from
	 Quality 
AFL Scott  Computers.

AFL Scott  No, your board is upgraded, sent to me for recalibration, the
	 shipped back to

AFL Bobloo We have done some neat stuff with the AST Board... 
AFL Scott  Well, the EV+ digitizes in MONO at a rate of 15 frames per second
	 in full 
AFL Bobloo But if we can improve the quality of the graphics, would be
	 marvelous! 
AFL Scott  screen mode... In preview mode, with an accelerator board mono
	 preview is at 
AFL Marty  Like what Bob? 
AFL Scott  4 frames per second.  In color preview, using calculated palette,
	 on a non 
AFL Bobloo We've done school birthday calendars, Marty...With kids pictures
	 taken by Birthday Month 
AFL Bobloo And then used MECCs Calendar Crafter to print out the calendars 
AFL Scott  accelerated GS the frame rate is approximately one in every 10
	 seconds.. this 
AFL Bobloo Kids give them to parents for Xmas presents... 
AFL Marty  What do you use to take the pics?  Camcorder? 
AFL Bobloo Yep...Camcorder into Vision Plus 
AFL Scott  can vary greatly with then number of colors in the raw image. 
	 With an  
AFL Bobloo Print to a LaserWriter 
AFL Scott  accelerated GS, preview in color is approximately 4 seconds per
	 frame. 
AFL Marty  Excellent! 
AFL Bobloo Really fun project, and the parents love it.. 
AFL Bobloo But I'm excited about making pictures better 
AFL Bobloo And I think I've just found out how to..:) 
AFL Scott  I've just finished calibrating DangardAces board, and boy, what a
	 difference!!! 
AFL Marty  I don't think you'll be disappointed Bob. 
DangardAce Gee Scott you found my board? 
AFL Scott  Listen, being totally objective is hard, but really, this is good
	 stuff.   
AFL Marty  I don't have the EV+ but I have seen Scott's program process the 
AFL Scott  I never lost it, Pete.. it just came today!:) 
AFL Bobloo Nope. Sure doesn't sound like  I will be. 
AFL Marty  raw data files. 
AFL Bobloo I'm looking forward to seeing it at AFest, that's for sure 
DangardAce Scott, the settings on that board were EXACTLY as it came from the
	 ex- 
Lucky24    Will you have to calibrate the Visionary boards, or just the AST
	 boards?

AFL Marty  The resulting images are superlative. 
AFL Scott  I'm not going to jerk you people around.  It's good software, and
	 it's getting 
AFL Scott  better every day as we're nearing release. 
DangardAce Are accelerator boards going to improve Allison's performance or
	 just get 
DangardAce the job done faster 
AFL Scott  However, being totally honest...in order to gain all the benefits
	 from Allison 
AFL Scott  recalibrating the board to match the software is a MUST.   
GuS Grafix Scott, just out of curiosity what language are you writing it
	 in? 
GuS Grafix ?APW C? 
AFL Marty  Isn't that the same thing, Pete? 
AFL Scott  Faster, Pete... that's all. The program works the same, just
	 faster. 
DangardAce APW C = The world's worst C 
AFL Scott  Assembly, Marian.... I tried Orca/C at first, but it was just too
	 slow.   
GuS Grafix I wondered...and kinda figured that, Scott

AFL Scott  The advantage with C on the GS is this... I used C to generate
	 nearly all of 
DangardAce Um, I meant I was sarcastically complimenting the company
	 Megamax.. 
AFL Scott  the lookup tables in Allison.  I wrote the programs to generate
	 assembly  
AFL Scott  language source so I could save time and just plug them right
	 in. 
AFL Scott  Additionally, C let me find out what worked and what didn't very
	 quickly. 
GuS Grafix What exactly does the DEMO do, if one doesn't have the hardware? 
ShanoJ     Heh... Wish I'd thought of that, Scott... I did the tables by
	 hand! :( 
AFL Scott  I strongly recommend Orca/C to anyone who is interested in the GS.
	  In my 
DangardAce So you used APW C? 
AFL Scott  application, though, C was just too slow. 
AFL Scott  I used Orca/C, Pete... just to experiment and generate look ups. 
DanW190    Then ya go to Orca/M, I presume :) 
I BRK4bugs Gee, I used Applesoft Basic to generate lookup tables in my last
	 assembly

AFL Scott  Marian... The Demo will include some raw images from beta testers
	 and myself.

DangardAce You know, Applesoft is the most accurate (sort of) basic ROM'd
	 ever in a

AFL Scott  It will process those raw images so you can get an idea...
	 additionally if 
AFL Scott  you have an EV+, it will digitized.  Saving it won't do though.
	 :) 
AFL Scott  Ok...  BTW, serious time... This program is work of love.  I don't
	 care if  
AFL Scott  anyone buys it or not.  That's not the important thing.  The
	 important thing

AFL Marty  It is excellent software.  I've seen it. 
AFL Scott  tolerant up to this point... See.. they haven't been able to save
	 their picture 
AFL Scott  s yet, either... but the next version is going to save in the
	 following formats 

AFL Scott  ...  1.  $C1 Pic.  2. Allison RawFile 3. Preview.  Preview can be
	 used for  
AFL Scott  things like MiniMovies...etc and can be either Monochrome or Full
	 color. 
Lucky24    BTW, are you going to have frame grabbing in Allison? 
AFL Scott  It digitizes in MONO, full screen at the fastest frame rate of the
	 board,  
AFL Scott  Lynda...  In fixed palette color mode, it's about 3 frames per
	 second... 
Lucky24    Well, I guess what I'm asking is if you are going to be able to
	 grab 
AFL Scott  you know what it's like in calcuated palette preview mode,
	 though.

AFL Scott  You mean stream digitizing?  I don't think it will for this
	 release, perhaps 
AFL Scott  the next one... however, if you're patient, you can digitize frame
	 by frame 
AFL Scott  and save each frame so you can put them together to form a mini
	 movie... the 
Lucky24    I'd really like to see this feature incorporated into Allison

AFL Scott  Well, Allison is the name my wife and I selected for our daughter

	 with me. :)

AFL Scott  BTW, after calibration... I hate to say this, and I'm not
	 competing with anyone 
FeinDavid  Movies.....  Before Allison, I would never even consider using the
	 Vision Plus 
AFL Scott  here, but Allison yields a MONO image that is just as sharp and
	 clear/crisp 
FeinDavid  in color... now I hardly use the incredible 15 frames per second
	 monochrome! 
AFL Marty  What do you mean when you say MONO image? 
FeinDavid  Monochrome... Black and White. 
FeinDavid  16 Shades of gray. 
AFL Scott  as Lightning scan or Quicky..:) 
AFL Scott  Quickie, that is..:) 
AFL Scott  Jonah, and Dave... for the people who missed... Tell them about
	 Allison/3200 
FeinDavid  Allison gives your IIgs AMIGA quality output..... FINALLY!!!! 
AFL Marty  I don't own a camcorder.  Does that mean the EV+ is useless to
	 me? 
Lucky24    I've been using Allison with just a VCR.  It's great. 
AFL Scott  It works great with video disk and VCR, Marty...:) 
FeinDavid  No way, it is more useful than anything else on the market. 
AFL Marty  VCR... I got one of those :) 
GuS Grafix That's a BIG improvement, Scott 
FeinDavid  Even the color digitizing only needs under a second to capture the
	 image. 
DangardAce I've been using Allison with a NEC VCR.. rock steady pause and
	 super crisp 
DangardAce pictures. 
Lucky24    however, a camcorder would be nice... 
FeinDavid  Once the image is captured on the fly, it is then processed! 
ShanoJ     Can you digitize yourself if you hold the cable coming out from
	 the VCR and hit 
ShanoJ     record? :) 
AFL Marty  I don't have that good a pause.  Will it matter? 
AFL Scott  I use it with camera or VCR.. great!  One other tester is using it
	 with a  
DangardAce I printed out one of Scott's very early pics in 16 colors on an HP
	 PaintJet..

AFL Marty  You have to plug the end of the cable in, Jonah :) 
DangardAce that girl was gorgeous! 
AFL Scott  Zapshot... works great there too!;) 
FeinDavid  If your image is not moving quickly, you can get a fantastic image
	 VERY quickly 
Lucky24    yeah... commercials come out great 
DangardAce I wonder how one would handle PRINTING 3200 color pics.. 
AFL Scott  In mono, it's nearly real time, Marian... in color, you have to be
	 a little mor 
FeinDavid  All that is necessary, is ONE SECOND to capture the image.  JUST
	 ONE SECOND! 
ShanoJ     Well, you send me a PaintJet and I'll give it a try! :) 
Lucky24    You can watch tv in black & white on the GS with Allison 
Lucky24    it's pretty wierd 
FeinDavid  Scott, even you have to admit, that now that the status line comes
	 up, it 
AFL Scott  e carefull, but generally, it works just fine in either mode... 
	 It's pretty 
FeinDavid  really shows you that a color capture is still VERY quick. 
AFL Scott  flexible... oh, and yes... color rate is 4 frames per second on
	 the hardware,  
AFL Scott  but the software slows it down some due to processing overhead. 
	 There is  
Lucky24    the color only shows selected frame.  The B&W is continuous...
	 just like 
FeinDavid  and four frames is all that is necessary to capture one color
	 image.  or is it 
AFL Scott  really nothing I can do about that. :) 
Lucky24    a tv monitor 
FeinDavid  three scott? 
AFL Scott  Three, Dave..:) 
AFL Marty  You should get a mirror Marian :) 
FeinDavid  With the enhanced Vision Plus, you can actually WATCH television
	 full screen 
AFL Scott  Maybe in future versions, I can speed up preview to work like full
	 screen, but 
FeinDavid  on your IIgs!  The EVP is the Apple II's first DMA video
	 digitizer! 
AFL Scott  I'm not promising at this stage. 
FeinDavid  it digitizes directly to your screen in monochrome mode! 
GuS Grafix Uh, if it's DMA does that mean I'm gonna have problems with my
	 TWGS...which... 
AFL Scott  (monochrome full screen that is, Dave...)  
GuS Grafix is one of the early ones--with the chips that need replacing in
