The core problem is noise on the IIgs Slot bus. The Slot bus is noisy because the +5V and +12 power traces on the motherboard are too skinny. They act like resistors across which noise develops. Another problem is skimpy leads from the IIgs Power Supply to the motherboard. Noise develops across these leads. You can reduce noise by adding jumper wires to a couple Slots on the bottom of the motherboard and by swapping in heavier +5V, +12V, and GND Power Supply leads. These mods are described in Question 7 in the CSA2POWER.TXT FAQs file on Ground at ftp://ground.ecn.uiowa.edu/apple2/Faqs/ or on Asimov-GS at ftp://apple.cabi.net/pub/applegs/FAQs.and.INFO/A2.Csa2.FAQs/ .
