....and it's unfortunate, since IIGIF does such a crummy job of
dithering.  If you have access to a UNIX box with pbmplus installed,
though, you can preprocess any full-screen (640x480, 1024x768, etc.)
color GIF into something that'll look a lot better:

giftoppm foo.gif | pnmscale -w 560 -h 192 | ppmtopgm | pgmtopbm | ppmtogif >bar.gif

pbmplus does a much better job of dithering (uses Floyd-Steinberg
error diffusion) than IIGIF.  You'll also save on download time...and
if you have djpeg, you can use this command line to view full-screen
JPEG images:

djpeg -P foo.jpg | pnmscale -w 560 -h 192 | ppmtopgm | pgmtopbm | ppmtogif >bar.gif

If the images aren't full-screen, you can mess with the width and
height some so that the picture isn't distorted.
