What is the name of the disk it is asking for? Did you mount > your target disk image? Instead of just answering all your questions here (and probably confusing the issue further) I'll tell you step-by-step what I do: 1) I start Bernie (version 2.6). A blue screen shows up with an apple moving from left to right with the text "Check startup device!" 2) I go to the "File" menu, then select "Mount disk..." and select the first of the 7 GS/OS disk images (the Bernie website docs tell me that I should skip the last one, so only the first 6 are needed). 3) I repeat this with the second of the 6 GS/OS disk images, then the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. 4) I also mount a blank disk image which I've created myself by going to "Create new disk" (also in the "File" menu) as mentioned in the docs. This disk image is 20 Mbytes in size. 5) OK, I now have 7 disk images in total. The 6 GS/OS images (remember, I've skipped the last one as the docs tell me), and the blank disk image. 6) I go to the "Setup" menu and select "Reset". The IIgs window resets and I'm presented with a "Welcome to the IIgs" window along with a progress bar which runs for a second or two. After that, a window shows up titled "Apple IIgs installer -easy update". 7) So far, so good (I guess/hope), but this is where I run into problems -probably a lot because I've never used a IIgs. According to the docs I do as follows: -Press the "Customize" button -On the left hand side, make sure "*System 6: Hard disk or FDHD" is highlighted. -Press the "Install" button 8) A dialog window shows up tells me that it's about to install, and I get a choice between "Skip this update" or "Perform this update". I choose to perform the update. 9) The installation starts, but after a couple of seconds a dialog window shows up saying: ---------------------------------------- Please insert the disk: SystemTools1 [Cancel] [OK] ---------------------------------------- At this stage I don't really know what to do as it seems to expect a floppy disk, so I just press "OK", but that just makes the same dialog reappear. Pressing "Cancel" naturally just cancels the whole installation. I believe I've followed the instructions found at the section of Bernie's website describing this (http://www.bernie.gs/SupportCenter/gsos/install/install.html), but I might have missed something. As for the GS/OS disk images, here are all of the 7 that I got after downloading from Apple's FTP site and decompressing them: Disk 1 of 7-Install Disk 2 of 7-System.Disk Disk 3 of 7-SystemTools1 Disk 4 of 7-SystemTools2 Disk 5 of 7-Fonts Disk 6 of 7-synthLAB Disk 7 of 7-Apple II Setup And yes, I've tried to rename them, removing the "Disk x of x-" preceeding the actual disk names (which should make the above "SystemTools1" disk (disk image) to match), but that didn't help. Oh... there's an easier way to mount all of the disk images by the way. I discovered that I can just drag the 7 disk images over to the Bernie application icon, which starts Bernie, mounts the disk images and boots the IIgs, all in one go! What should happen: The system needs the disk System Tools 1, searches all the online disks and can't find it, so asks you to insert it. If you insert a 3.5" disk (or mount a disk image) the system detects the insertion and automatically checks that disk to see if it's the right one, you don't even need to click OK. Make sure you have the Disks window (under the Windows menu item) open too. This shows all the disks that are inserted. > I believe I've followed the instructions found at the section of > Bernie's website describing this > (http://www.bernie.gs/SupportCenter/gsos/install/install.html), but I > might have missed something. > > As for the GS/OS disk images, here are all of the 7 that I got after > downloading from Apple's FTP site and decompressing them: > > Disk 1 of 7-Install > Disk 2 of 7-System.Disk > Disk 3 of 7-SystemTools1 > Disk 4 of 7-SystemTools2 > Disk 5 of 7-Fonts > Disk 6 of 7-synthLAB > Disk 7 of 7-Apple II Setup > > > And yes, I've tried to rename them, removing the "Disk x of x-" > preceeding the actual disk names (which should make the above > "SystemTools1" disk (disk image) to match), but that didn't help. That wont matter. The name of the disk image file and the disk itself are completely seperate. To make sure the disk is OK, try this: Start Bernie using just the disk called Systsem Disk. This is a boot disk which will take you into the Finder. You should see one disk on the desktop called System.Disk, now mount the other disks and watch to see if they appear on the desktop. > Oh... there's an easier way to mount all of the disk images by the way. > I discovered that I can just drag the 7 disk images over to the Bernie > application icon, which starts Bernie, mounts the disk images and boots > the IIgs, all in one go! > > > Hallvard -- Roger Johnstone, Invercargill, New Zealand Apple II - FutureCop:LAPD - iMac Game Wizard http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~rojaws/ ________________________________________________________________________ My software never has bugs. Just like when installing a disk image on the Mac within MacOS. But apparently the (virtual) IIgs doesn't detect any disks. Is it expecting a real, physical floppy disk instead? Do I need to actually copy the contents of the disk image files over to floppies and use them instead? > Make sure you have the Disks window (under the > Windows menu item) open too. I thought so, but had to try since nothing else worked. > To make sure the disk is OK, try this: > Start Bernie using just the disk called Systsem Disk. Yes, that worked.... for the first disk I mounted, but nothing appeared on the IIgs desktop after any more mounts. By going to the Mac menu in the emulator I saw that the images were indeed mounted, but apparently the IIgs wouldn't have any of that :-( Why does it have to be so complicated? Well, I couldn't get Bernie 2.6 running under Mac OS Classic in OS X to apparently work right. It would only mount disks in the slot 5 drives or something like that and wouldn't pick up the test image I made for doing a quick install. However, Bernie 3 Preview worked just fine with the same preferences and disk images. So I don't know why it's complicated. Maybe it's just not working right on your system...just like it didn't work on mine with Bernie 2.6. Greg B. -- There's just one 2 in my e-mail address, so delete one to e-mail me. Bernie will allow you to mount up to 8 disks images on the emulated SmartPort. Check under the Setup menu and make sure Low-Level Disk Support is off. If it's on it limits Bernie to two emulated 3.5" disk drives, just like the internal disk port on a real IIgs. The low-level support is only needed for a few self-booting games and demos which had there own DOS, like a lot of the FTA programs. The low-level support also limits you to 800KB disk images, there is no support for anything else. -- Roger Johnstone, Invercargill, New Zealand Apple II - FutureCop:LAPD - iMac Game Wizard http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~rojaws/ ________________________________________________________________________ "That's the thing about people who think they hate computers. I misread the manual, making sure it was turned ON. Turning it off changed everything. I'm still pretty confused, even though I've somehow managed to install GS/OS it seems, but I have some other problems (which are probably minor to the above). I'm going to try it again, step-by-step to see if I've done everything correctly, then get back here to ask some more if I still have problems. Thanks so far! It's going to be great to finally run those Apple ][ oldies again. It's been a while. Hallvard -- Atari Launchpad : Notator/Creator SL :
