AppleUni FAQ This FAQ is a compilation of E-Mail questions from Peter Pauen, and was prepared by Andrew J. Kroll -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q1) How come that a PC can never (even with comfortable disk utilities like norton) read original apple-disks? Or is there a way to read these disks, even with the emulator? A1: It's a HARDWARE limitation, I'm currently working on a hardware HACK for it! As *soon as I create it, I'll let you know! Q2) Is there an easier way to load disk_images from the harddrive than always rename different disk_images to aadisk6.dsk? That's a bit tedious... A2: YES!! Did you read the documentation? Try saving the image files to floppies and just use the file name of disk6.dsk! Note: You -==MUST==- have 2 floppy drives for this work!!!! I **AM** adding support for changing images on the fly... it's in-the-works and coming *soon! Q3) When did you finish working on the emulator-program? OR do you still work on it? A3: I'm still working on it, but currently it is still on a back burner, as I have been VERY busy! More versions coming *soon, as I have more time for it NOW though! Q4) Is there a newer version than the one that I could get from ftp.uni-kl.de? A4: This -==IS==- the newest version! For updates VIA UUE-MAIL send me a 'HELLO' message, and I'll put you on the list. I do it MANUALLY as I have no access to a list-server! Anyone who would be willing to help me on this PLEASE send me E-Mail, and we will discuss it. (There MIGHT be a BONUS in it for YOU!) My E-Mail address is , and I will have a Web page *soon! Q5) What language did you use when you wrote the emulator? A5: NONE!!! It is written in 100% Assembler! It's dirrived from a VERY EARLY version of Randy Spurlock's Emulator. I still credit him. Assembler is the only -==REAL==- way to get any speed out of it! I noticed, however it runs TOO FAST on a 386dx-40 or higher! (BUMMER! could this be considered a -==BUG==-??? ***Want it FIXED?) So, when playing games, just TURN OFF the turbo mode on your PC. You can do this by: 1: Do you have a TURBO switch on the front of your PC? Dis-enguage it! 2: you can do it from the keyboard with ?? if your BIOS allows this! The nice this is that increase in speed allows you to hop on the Internet Using Kermit and directly grab the files you want at a REASONABLE SPEED! Q6) Why can't I run AppleUni under Windows/Win'95 or Windows NT? A6: Well, it is because of the way the emulator was written. AppleUni talks DIRECTLY to your hardware, and Windows TRAPS these calls and will NOT let you change them (The keyboard mainly). Too bad, and we all thought Win'95 would be oh-so 'backwords compatable'! HAH! (It didn't work under Windows on my pc or Win'95 on another person's pc... so I just assume that it WON'T run on NT... it HAS been run successfull on DOS emulators on UNIX and Linux machines though and it -=MIGHT=- run on Win95/NT if you go into a 'full dos mode') In other words, If it isn't working properly, you do not meet the needs of the program. (which is -=NOT=- hard to do if it runs on an XT!) If there are other problems, AppleUni -=WILL=- Alert you! Notes: * Soon as I'm done playing Hard Hat Mack on AppleUni, that is! ;) ** Gimmie a chance! There -==IS==- only 24 hours in a day! (See *) *** Send me E-mail if you have a **GOOD** Idea!
