I always had the intention on getting a hard drive for my system when I purchased it but the cost on most units were out of my range, so, I engaged in saving my money. While I was saving I looked at many different hard drives and was going to purchase a 20meg unit from a third party company, then I decided to go with an Apple unit, the 20SC Hard Drive. When it came time to actually purchase my drive I decided to get a 40meg because I realized that 20 would be too small, which after using it for a while I found I was correct that the 20 would have been too small. I currently have 25meg on the unit used. The real benefits that I am enjoying using my Apple Hard Drive is that I have increased my productivity by being able to double it, it has also made me rest more easy because I'm not having to switch disks in my 3.5 inch drive every 5 minutes, I'm sure that factor reduces a tremendous amount of wear on my 3.5 inch drive. The real boost of adrenalin that I received was when I received Apples GSOS ver. 5.0 and installed it on my hard drive, the 40SC was fast with ver. 4.0 but with GSOS ver. 5.0 I have found that my productivity has increased again with leaps and bounds. The specifications on the Apple 40SC Hard Drive are as follows, as the name suggests the 40SC is a 40 megabyte device, it has a startup time and a spindown time of 13 and 18 seconds respectively, it's average access time is 30 milliseconds, and it has a transfer rate of up to 1.25 megabytes per second. Physical appearance is contemporary and is housed in a small platinum casing that matches Apple's computer line. The unit is an external hard drive and is quick to hook up to the Apple IIGS using a SCSI card, recommended place for the SCSI card is slot 7 in the IIGS which allows for startup from the hard drive without having to set slot 7 to be the startup in the control panel. The startup slot in the control panel can be left on it's default setting of SCAN. In concluding this review, to recap the Apple 40SC Hard Drive is a wise investment for any Apple IIGS owner or user. Although the Apple drives may be a bit more expensive and if you have the space for on your desk for an external drive it really makes your system look complete and impressive. However, not only does it look impressive but the functionability of the 40SC is outstanding, I did try other hard drives before I purchased my Apple 40SC and found that most of them seemed to work a bit slower when accessing information from the drive. The Apple 40SC has really made a difference in the way I use my Apple IIGS, it has increased my productivity in many areas including, designing of a new computer desk, writing short stories, helping me keep track of customers that I deal with at work, and in many more ways. Not to mention probably everyones favorites, accessing and playing games. ((0^ ((0^
