She hadn't done well at her OMold school and wouldn't do well at this one, either, unless she settled down NLand PERSEVERED. {B} However, she knew she wasn't going to work hard -- she HFhad always managed barely to pass one way or another. She copied her PNhomework from someone else. On tests she cheated. Suzanna was smart enough )to do the work. She was just too lazy. LJ In this new school the kids caught on to her ways quickly. They had LJformed an IMPENETRABLE {C} wall against her that she couldn't get through OMafter they found out that the only reason she acted friendly was to get help with her schoolwork. JH All of the students realized what sort of person she was, that is, GEexcept Jack Humphries. He didn't have any friends. He wasn't very PNpersonable. He was CORPULENT {D} but wouldn't go on a diet. He was TIMOROUS MK{E} but couldn't overcome his shyness and fear of people. And when he did PNtry to enter a conversation, he was so LUDICROUS {F} that everyone laughed at )him (and not always behind his back).  JH All this made him draw into his shell even more. So Jack wound up LJspending almost all of his time studying. It paid off because he had the highest average in the class. MK Naturally, Suzanna set out to MESMERIZE {G} him, and very quickly she FDhad him under her spell. For the rest of the semester Jack did her OMassignments and let her copy off his test papers. For tests in classes they MKdidn't have together he would make her a cheat sheet. Jack knew that this NLwas wrong of him, but he couldn't help himself. It was the first time that QOanyone had treated him so wonderfully and he was hopelessly in love with her. PNHe wouldn't listen when the other students tried to warn him that Suzanna was Dusing him. She made him feel smart and interesting and important. LJ This continued until the week of final exams. The students went into KIMrs. Bell's English class for the test. Suzanna sat in the desk next to MKJack. He would get her through this course, and then she would drop him. LJShe didn't know one answer on the entire test, but she was so DEVIOUS {H} KIwith her cheating that she knew no one would see her. She handed in her 3paper and left the room with a smile on her face. OM Later when Jack asked her for a date that week-end, she told him to get NLlost. She was finished with school for the year, and she was finished with OMJack, too. She didn't worry about her grades for the following year -- that would take care of itself. QO The next week Suzanna received her grades in the mail and almost fainted LJwhen she saw the F in English. She grabbed the phone to call Mrs. Bell. GEThis was too INCREDIBLE {I} to believe! "Mrs. Bell, this is Suzanna OMCummings. I got my grade card for your class and it has to be a mistake. I Canswered all the questions on the test." She was close to tears. A "Yes, Suzanna, you did.
