Welcome to the revived Apple II Archive at apple2.caltech.edu! In order to effectively use the site, you should be familiar with the various filename suffixes which denote packing methods. All file types except .bsc, .bsq and .txt _must_ be downloaded in BINARY mode. The server now being used for this archive will warn you if it thinks you are downloading in the wrong mode. Suffix(es) Meaning ---------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- .shk, .sdk ShrinkIt Archive, unpack w/ShrinkIt or GSHK (.sdk = disk archive) .bxy ShrinkIt Archive w/Binary II Wrapper, unpack as above .bsc BINSCII encoded file, decode w/BinSCII and use .bsq ShrinkIt in BinSCII, decode w/BinSCII and then unpack as above .Z Packed with UNIX "compress" program, use "uncompress" to unpack You will need ShrinkIt and/or BinSCII to use most of the files on this archive. To get BinSCII, download "binscii.exe" and EXEC it from BASIC.SYSTEM. To get To get ShrinkIt download "gshk11.bsc" (IIGS), "shrinkit34.bsc" (IIc, Enh. IIe), or "unshk2plus.bsc" (Unenh. IIe, II Plus) from /ARCHIVERS and decode w/BinSCII. Please be sure to read README.UPLOAD before submitting files to the archive. Also, note that the archive's incoming folder is now write-only. Since the archive is now on my personal machine, I can tend to it more easily, and the NEW.FILES directory should be updated weekly (if not more often). Damiel M.
